Wholesale Distribution Business Review: How to Start a Refillable Lighters Distribution Business from Home.

This article will show you all the highlights of how you can start a wholesale distribution business selling refillable lighters to supermarkets and convenience stores.

Lighters are one of the easiest things to wholesale and distribute. Stores buy them like crazy!

I started selling lighters when I had my route in San Diego with about 600 stores. Other distributors told me about how much money they were making with lighters so I decided to give them a try. They were right. Since the first day we introduced them to the stores they were best sellers and they have remained best sellers for years.

The first thing you should know is that I’m not talking about disposable lighters or even name brand lighters like Colibri or Zippo. I’m talking about Novelty or Collector lighters. The kind you see in convenience stores and liquor stores. They are butane refillable lighters.

For example, the top selling lighters were lighters in the form of a gun, torch lighters and chopper motorcycle style lighters.

The lighters cost about $1.25 to $1.50 plus shipping, depending on the style of the lighter. Some of them are regular flame lighters, some of them have a torch, and some are double or even triple wind resistant torch lighters.

Lighters come in a small cardboard counter display. You get all of the same kind in every display. You get from 12 to 30 lighters in each display, depending on the size of each lighter.

When you distribute the lighters you sell them for at least $2 all the way up to $3 or even $3.50. It all depends where you are in the USA or in the world, the size of your town, the size of the stores, etc. You learn how to price them quickly from the first time you go into the stores.

So how much can you make? Well, if you leave an average of 2 displays per store containing an average of 25 lighters each, you’ll sell 50 lighters at an average of $3.00 or $150 sale. If you paid $1.50 per lighter including shipping you made $1.50 per lighter or $75 profit in one store. If you sell to 10 stores that day you are selling $1,500 and pocketing $750.00 minus your gas and other expenses. That’s not bad for a few hours of work. In my business all of my salespeople have to visit at least 20 stores per day, not 10 stores!

Let’s go over the numbers of our example again: -Your cost per lighter including shipping= $1.50 -You sell the lighter to the stores = $3.00 -Each display has an average of how many lighters = 25 -If you sell just 2 displays to the store how many lighters did you sell = 50 lighters -How much was the sale? = $150 -How much was your profit? = $75 -If you sell to 10 stores in a day how much do you sell? = $1,500 -How much do you profit minus gas and other expenses? = $750

Again, your business will vary depending on how many stores you have, how often you visit them the price you sell them for, and many other variables.

Let me tell you what I like and don’t like about the business. What I like is that you go through a lot of lighters really fast. They are small and easy to store and carry. They come in their own display so you don’t need to buy racks or displays (although you can if you want or if the stores like them). I also like the fact that lighters are small and you don’t need a truck or extra storage to sell them.

The thing I like least about the lighter business is that the margins are not as high as with other products. I think it’s a fair trade because of the volume you can sell. The other thing with lighters is that people like to choose them. Instead of you selling whatever you have in the car people like to play with them before they buy them, they like to test them, to look at every one. It’s a novelty, so they want to buy what they like, not necessarily what sells.

All and all I think it’s one of the best businesses to be in.

Amnesty, eminent domain, 200% cigar tax increase, incandescent lightbulb bans… is it time for a revolution?

According to pretty much every single poll taken on the subject, the vast majority of Americans oppose any type of amnesty for illegals, & want the existing immigration laws enforced. Despite this, Congress spent vast amounts of time & taxpayer $ working on a bill that we the people, were opposed to from the get-go. Our inalienable rights (in Adam Smith’s original interpretation), “…the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of property have slipped from our grasp when the Supreme Court voted to allow the govt. to confiscate land from citizens. Although it’s supposed to only allow for this if the land will benefit society as a whole, the govt. has been seizing property to sell to private land developers. These developers aren’t constructing roads or ERs or necessities, but hotels & subdivisions. Several Democrats have introduced bills to hike cigar taxes from $.05 to $10. Some states have BANNED normal lightbulbs, forcing us to use expensive, mercury filled eco-friendly bulbs.

“A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has first destroyed itself from within,” were William Durant’s words, also the opening phrase in “Apocalypto”, great movie. But in comparison with Rome during the period of its fall, I find America to be in almost the exact same position. Government has its hands on too many aspects of the individual’s life, and thus the individual is entirely reliant on the government for his welfare. Speaking of “welfare,” the system of welfare, as do a number of other institutions, take the responsibility off the individual to take care of him or herself. In an endless attempt to be “fair,” nature is defied, for it is not only the strong who survive. There is a state of moral decay among the populace: people who will not fight for themselves, who will not take responsibility for their actions, who will not give first in order to receive. It is the same reason Romans had to hire so many conscripts from outside the empire to fight their wars in the waning days. It is why I fear the American GOVERNMENT is on the brink of collapse. However, there are many American people who are not touched by such moral corruption, and I believe they will stand strong, and they will do what is necessary for their survival.

What makes hand rolled cigars much better than rolled by machine?

I always hear hand rolled is better… but why?
I don’t actually smoke cigars… just curious as to why exactly? I guess it’s the same reason home made food tastes better than processed eh?

Machine made cigars are rolled using chopped/short filler and most do not use a binder, just a wrapper. Being a machine, it has no way to really tell if the components being used are ‘good’ or not. Doesn’t matter as they use sub par tobacco to begin with. The cigars will be exactly the same from stick to stick.

OTOH, hand rolleds are at the mercy of the torcedor – under and over filled cigars are possible and consistency is more difficult to maintain. They mainly use long filler tobacco, but also hand roll sandwich style and short filler cigars.

Buying cigars can be like buying fine wine….it can get expensive! Don’t shortchange yourself or your cigars buy storing them in a substandard cigar humidor. This article will discuss the major components of a quality cigar humidor.

Below is a short list of the more important items to consider when selecting a cigar humidor:

1. Seal: The most important aspect of a humidor is its ability to hold humidity. The seal will do that. When evaluating a cigar humidor, drop the lid from approximately 2-3 inches to see how it closes. If it lands on a cushion of air, the seal is fine. If it “clangs” when the lid is dropped, walk away because that isn’t a quality humidor….in fact, “it’s just a box”. Look to see what hinges are used to close the lid. Quality cigar humidors will have hidden quadrant hinges and/or piano hinges, which provide the best seal possible.

2. Exterior Construction: The sidewalls and bottom of the humidor should be at a minimum, ½” thick. Thicker than average sidewalls will create a more stable humidor interior with less fluctuations in temperature or humidity. Large temperature and humidity fluctuations will ruin your cigars. Check to see if the outside bottom of the humidor is lined with felt to prevent scratching of the furniture that you place your humidor on.

3. Interior Construction: It is extremely important that your humidor be lined in Kiln-Dried Spanish Cedar. This is the industry standard when it comes to quality made humidors. Kiln-Dried Spanish Cedar provides for less aromatic aromas than other woods which makes it the more desirable choice when selecting a cigar humidor. “You don’t want overly aromatic woods in your humidor as it may impart an unwanted flavor to your cigars”. Additionally, Spanish cedar is less prone to warping which is imperative when used in a high humidity application such as a cigar humidor. Should the interior of your humidor warp, the seal on the humidor will be broken and your cigars rendered useless. Having the interior Kiln-Dried gets rid of all the natural moisture that all woods contain. If the humidor you’re looking at has trays, make sure that they are ventilated to assure the humidity in your humidor can circulate to all cigars in the humidor.

4. Style: Are you interested in impressing your poker playing buddies or will a less fancy cigar humidor do? Matte finish or a multiple layer high gloss finish? One for the golf bag? There are so many styles to choose from it can be pretty confusing. Just make sure the humidor fits your personal style.

5. Quality: Don’t let price alone influence your decision as to what is a quality cigar humidor. There are many humidors on the market today that retail for less than $100 that will keep your cigars perfectly fresh for a long time. Look at all the variables discussed in steps 1-4 and you should have an easier time finding a quality humidor.

Try to avoid mixing mild and strong cigar in a single humidor…especially if they come without cellophane wrappers. They will marry their aromas and you will not have the cigars you thought you had. We always advise multiple cigar humidors if they have premium cigars without cellophane wrappers. Many premium cigars, such as La Gloria Cubana Serie line, have no cellophane on their cigars and these should not come in contact with other un-cellophaned cigars in your humidor.

Take your time…If you follow the 5 steps mentioned above, you will have a much easier time in finding the best cigar humidor for you.
