federal cigarette tax

Discount cheap cigarettes are sold in all states of America besides being available for quick shipping. The fact that most cheap cigarette manufacturers and online suppliers have been given their lessons by competition they tend to maintain highest quality.

To understand who is purchasing cheap cigarettes at discount price you may refer to a report by Federal Trade Commission in File No. 041 0017 and several other papers on tobacco control. The papers say in unison that increased price on cigarettes eventually but temporarily results in reduced smoking. Smokers below 30 years of age are unstable on brand loyalty than those that are aged above that. When they change loyalty they are likely to switch to brands perceived as having higher brand equity but the ratio of smokers that switch to discount cigarettes due to increase in tax aren’t the young population that belongs to higher income bracket.

Quite obviously, a dependant who smokes Marlboro, Camel, and Winston, Virginia slims, Salem or any other premium branded cigarettes irrespective of whether tobacco used is regular or menthol flavored, will think many times over before she or he continues to keep brand loyalty, which is reasonably highly unlikely. Because, to buy Marlboro, for example, from a neighborhood store would be costlier than buying cheap Marlboro cigarettes from an online shop.

Who Else Is Purchasing Cheap Discount Cigarettes

Cheap cigarettes are purchased tax free mostly by heavily dependent smokers like hapless poor people, elderly, predominantly women; but this list isn’t conclusive for this in all likelihood can include independent youngsters who are just starting off their earning careers.

The sudden increase in tax has been severe in most states and it has been to the tune of 200 cents per pack in at least four states. So, smokers from low to moderate income levels from these four and many other state where the tax hikes haven’t been smooth are hit pretty badly. American Reservations and neighboring areas are concentrated with cheap cigarette sellers due to tax free regime.

Anyone who is above the age of 18 years can buy cigarettes in the USA. Cheap discount cigarette sellers will need documental evidence of buyers’ age for effecting the sale. While this regulation is intended at preventing adolescents from picking up smoking habits from our point of view, you can almost say teens are not the major buyers of cheap cigarettes. This is true even logically, as most online discount Marlboro or generic cigarette shops would need online credit card payment before they process your order.

Internationally, for Russians and outsiders living in Russia alike, duty free tobacco products are truly one amongst the main reliefs of being there. The same also holds true for countries such as Ukraine, China and Japan where consumption of cheap cigarettes are more in addition to manufacturing activities. There are smokers for whom cheap cigarettes are as expensive as compared to food.

The easy availability of cheap cigarettes has more or less efficiently beaten the price differential everywhere. It’s common place that cheap cigarettes can be availed from vans, street venders and door to door sellers. If the murmur at corner smoke shops is anything to go by, authorities may need to restructure their tax regulations in order to contain smoking but till such times it appears more and more that almost everyone has switched to smoking cheap cigarettes.

revenue cigarette tax

Revenue:
The most important purpose, taxes raise revenue for the government to spend on education, transportation, jobs, local governments, military, and judicial systems. Without taxes finding funding to build schools and buy books for them would be incredible difficult. Our country, as well as many others, is literally funded by our own taxes. Individuals, companies, and small businesses all get taxed for certain endeavors and those funds then go back into our economy.

As long as a country is thriving, there should be revenue coming in through taxes. However, concerns have arose in the past few years as to whether or not the United States is meeting expected revenue. Experts claim the economy is protected enough to let the low revenue affect taxpayer’s day to day lives.

Redistribution:
Many debate the purpose of using taxes for redistribution, but the main idea is to tax those who can afford it (i.e. the wealthy) and use the money to fund programs for lower income families. Debate rages on as to whether or not this tactic is fair or if our government is even properly redistributing in the first place. Current presidential candidates disagree on the President Bush tax cuts in particular, which democratic candidates Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. Joe Biden feel give tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans, completely defeating the purpose of redistribution in our tax system.

Re-pricing:
The tax system is also used to discourage and encourage. Taxes on things such as cigarettes and liquor discourage the intake of substances. The idea of implementing a carbon tax encourages fuel efficiency, but again is much like a penalty. Re-pricing is another main purpose of the inner workings of our tax system, because it is a large and equal flat tax, given to any and everyone indulging in such taxable items. Re-pricing happens all over the market in multiple ways in order to keep a sort of balance and subtle control on spending.

Representation:
American revolutionists often coined the phrase “no taxation without representation,†so taxpayers know the government may be able to tax them, but accountability is mandatory. It is important for United States citizens and the government to be on even terms with taxes, and that all reasons and uses for said collected taxes are available to the public in multiple forms. It’s hard to remember that taxes are there to help us, but representation will always keep the information available.

texas cigarette tax increase
Dichotomy of Texas Cigarette Tax?

Texas received the highest civil award in history from the tobacco companies. Texas held that tobacco was addictive, that the companies knew this and in fact increased the nicotine amout to make it even more so. They contended that the companies customers were physically, financially and emotionally abused by these practices and compensation was demanded.

So the courts awarded Texas $13 billion dollars for having done such terrible things to so many people over such a long period of time. To date no smoker has received any of the money collected in the name of their suffering. The state grasiously decided that since the schools partially funded by the state lottery would be better served by adding an additional $1.00 per pack tax to raise more money for shool funding. Schools are gambling & smoke free environments.

Dichotomy? It’s a yes or no question.

No offense, but your fact pattern and question make no sense. What’s a “dichotomy” of a cigarette tax? Do you mean instead a “diversion” of the cigarette tax?

And what’s the tax have to do with a 13 billion dollar judgment against tobacco companies? Do you have a link to this 13 billion dollar judgment? Do you have a link supporting any of your assertions?

What is the current status of crossing to Oklahoma from Texas and purchasing cigarettes for personal use from.?

Government taxes on cigarettes to fund healthcare for other people’s children, on top of all the taxes on cigarettes is pure discrimination of one group of people. I paid for my children’s insurance with no help from anyone. Neither did I get $1000 tax credit per child.
HERE’S A THOUGHT— If you can’t afford em, don’t have em. Don’t have em and expect me to support em.

It is illegal to import taxable items such as cigarettes across state lines for the purpose of tax evasion.

The rest of your question is a useless rant.

north carolina cigarette tax increase

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

Days before the North Carolina General Assembly convened for its 2009 session, Senate leader Marc Basnight suggested he may call for increases in cigarette and alcohol taxes to address a portion of the state’s large and growing budget gap. Though well-meaning, the Senator’s idea is badly flawed.
Senator Basnight is right that state leaders must find a way to deal with the budget shortfall – which is projected to be as much as $3 billion for the 2009-10 fiscal year. Addressing the shortfall through spending cuts alone will hurt the economy – remember, government spending pays salaries, buys goods and services, and makes the investments that will form the basis of a more prosperous future for North Carolina. Program cuts would also weaken families and communities because adequately funded public systems – such as schools, courts, health inspections and so on – are vital to daily life.
However, not every proposal for raising money is a good idea. These particular tax-increase proposals (on cigarettes and alcohol) are really terrible policy ideas with negative consequences that will far outweigh the positive. First and foremost, they will unfairly burden low- and moderate-income taxpayers, who spend most of their incomes and are in fact more likely to be addicted to cigarettes that higher-income taxpayers.
Increasing taxes on them not only makes it harder for them to make ends meet – at a time when many of them have lost jobs or seen their hours cut – but it could also hurt the economy. Studies have shown that while a sizeable cigarette-tax increase can deter teenagers from smoking, adult smokers – the ones running households and supporting families – are unlikely to buy fewer packs of cigarettes because they cost more. Instead, they’ll make cuts elsewhere, essentially taking the money out of their local economies.
So, while increasing cigarettes taxes at least ten percent makes sense as a tool to curb teen smoking, doing so to fill a budget hole is bad policy because it will only make future budget gaps greater. Unlike costs for state services like education and health care, which will surely continue to rise every year, cigarette tax revenues will actually decline over time as current smokers die off and fewer people pick up the habit. And alcohol taxes will at best grow with the state’s population and will not keep pace with the cost of providing public services or the state’s economy.
Happily, there are several better options for raising revenue than cigarette and alcohol tax increases. For example, North Carolina’s tax code is littered with corporate tax loopholes that cost the state tens of millions of dollars and benefit no one except shareholders. Moreover, expanding the sales tax to include a few services, such as entertainment, would increase revenue and actually make the tax code fairer because wealthy people spend much more on services than working families. After all, does it really make sense to increase taxes on low-income people or cut services for struggling families when the state could instead require rich people to pay a slightly higher tax rate? (Increasing taxes on higher-income people does not hurt the economy because they have the resources to keep their standard of living going while saving a little less.)
The one criterion by which “sin tax” proposals fair well – and perhaps the only one considered by Senator Basnight – is known as “political feasibility”, or in other words, they “poll well.” Of course they do. The majority of us who don’t smoke and don’t drink heavily, so what’s not to like about a tax paid by others.
But the entire state suffers from bad tax policy. Years of implementing short-term fixes and avoiding hard decisions is how North Carolina got into this mess. Doing what’s in the best interest of the state doesn’t always poll well. Nevertheless, North Carolina’s leaders have a duty to fully evaluate all the policy tools available to them and choose the path that will put the state on the road to fiscal stability.
Tar heels that drink and smoke didn’t cause this economic collapse so why should they alone bear responsibility for making it right? Quite frankly, they shouldn’t.

Cigarette Tax Increase in California Again?

I noticed in early august @ the local CVS cartons were about $41 plus tax. I went again late Aug to buy a carton and it was now $44 plus tax. Someone told me that there was another tobacco tax increase in Aug 2009. Is this true?
I tried researching it online but can’t come up with anything. Anyone know a website that tells us california had raised the cig tax again and by how much?

All I found were articles about lawmakers pushing for a cigarette tax (dated Aug. 2009), but not any that stated any new tax in August 2009. There was a tax put in place earlier in the year…

If you legalize drugs and tax it?

all drug cartells, all drug gangs, distribution networks, enforcing agencies, all killings, most of border problems, most of guns bought, money laundering and enforcement, about 39% of jail population and all cost of enforcement will not be needed.
on the cotrary, there will be a national income, like cigarettes.
isnt that a sane solution ?????

All?

Not happening.

I don’t think making something stupid and dangerous “legal” just to tax it makes sense nor is to be considered “sane”

That’s just me.

federal cigarette tax increase 2009

There are many reasons that lead people to finally make the decision to stop smoking. Besides the monetary cost (the new Federal tax that went into effect on April 1, 2009, amounts to $1.01!), or the social stigma of smoking, the best reason to convince you to stop smoking should be for your health and the health of those around you. If you would like to live a long, healthy life, that is.

It has long been known that smoking causes 30% of all deaths due to cancer, with lung cancer topping the list. Smoking is the cause of about 87% of all lung cancer deaths. It’s an equal opportunity cancer that kills both men and women, and is difficult to treat. Cancers of the larynx, mouth, throat, bladder and the esophagus have been directly related to smoking since the 1980s. Here in the 21st century, doctors are finding that the list of cancers that smoking causes has increased to include acute myeloid leukemia, cervix, kidney, pancreatic and stomach cancers.

There are other deadly but non-cancerous diseases that are caused by smoking. They include abdominal aortic aneurysm, pneumonia (which is especially deadly for elderly patients) chronic lung disease, chronic heart and cardiovascular diseases. Smoking is also associated with problems such as cataracts, macular degeneration (which can eventually lead to blindness, if the smoking doesn’t kill you first!), osteoporosis (which could lead to hip fracture) and periodontitis (gum disease). These diseases won’t kill you, but they can make your life miserable.

If you’re a woman, you’ll want to know that smoking can damage your reproductive health, reducing your chances of becoming pregnant. If you do become pregnant, you’ll have a higher risk of miscarriage, an early delivery, a low-weight baby, a stillbirth or infant death. Smoking is also linked to SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome).

This list is way too long to print on each pack of cigarettes! There is no downside to stopping smoking. But people have to be ready to stop before they can actually reach their goal. So, to prevent spending your later years lugging an oxygen tank behind you with tubes up your nose, consider stopping smoking now, before it’s too late. If you don’t want to do it for yourself, do it for your family, who won’t suffer through all of your secondhand smoke.
