Since the nineteenth century, Key West has comprised one on the historic hubs of cigar tradition. Erstwhile boasting more cigar factories per capita than anywhere else on the globe, Key West had always had a major part in the cigar industry. Shortly after the U.S. Civil War , this town turned into a Mecca for Cuban citizens taking flight from their nation’s revolution against Spain. By the late 1870’s there were over 100 factories making cigars.

Cuban influence in Key West commenced on a massive scale in 1868 when the first war against Spanish authority created a mass exodus. When Cubans confronted forced conscription into the Spanish army to battle against their countrymen, thousands of skilled cigar craftsmen and their families fled their native land.

On a single September day in 1869, over 2,000 Cubans lined the wharves of the Havana to escape their motherland. While some left for New York City or New Orleans, the majority got on steamships for the 12-hour trip to a destination ninety miles northward, a place Cubans called Cayo Hueso, today’s Key West.

The civil war against Spain died by 1878, nonetheless it created social turbulence in Key West as Cuban emigrants kept on arriving intermittently for decades, literally revolutionizing Key West’s social fabric and economy.

Prior to 1868, Key West had fewer than 500 occupants, notable chiefly for taking riches from shipwrecks, but a fresh form of riches was about to come when Cuban émigrés, with talented cigar making skills, descended in the thousands in the matter of a year or two.

At the apex of the industry, Key West constituted the biggest cigar-producing town in the nation. It bragged of fifty-seven major manufacturers of cigars–many of whom resettled from Havana–and each hired between five and five hundred workers. In 1883 exclusively, 42 million hand-rolled cigars were made.

To house their cigar laborers, factory owners frequently constructed little cottages–bungalow-style structures principally of frame construction–and rented them out for low sums. To assure an ample supply of laborers, these homes were adjacent to manufacturing plants. These structures still comprise the biggest category of frame vernacular (simple structures, made of wood with few or no ornamental details) in Key West proper.

They were built from termite-proof Dade County pine with high ceilings for ventilation. They were elevated off the ground, allowing air to flow under the houses where roosters and hens lived and were part of the family, raised for eggs or meat or were trained for cock fights.

Although little by today’s criteria, these cottages were far better than living circumstances in Havana they were surely far superior to condemnable tenement houses in Northern cities. Many times a cigar artisan would change jobs to another factory simply to have a newer house to live in. These homes were offered for inexpensive rent or with the option to purchase at a reasonable price to maintain a stable work force.

With good homes, high wages and the freedom to support the revolution, the cigar artisans lived well. Their smart unions secured significant strength, and while many labor union workers in the North were cowered in deplorable tenement lodgings, Key West cigarworkers were basking in paradise. Even their multiple strikes, which eventually helped bring about the decline of the cigar industry, reflected the luxuriousness of their situation. In the strike of 1918, work stopped, as was common, until the union demands were filled. The requests: no brooming before 6 a.m., ice in the drinking water, and coal, not wood, as fuel for wintertime heating.

The cigar cottages have braved the test of time. Most of these Key West buildings are tiny, only 300 or 400 square feet. They often have porches, little yards with picket fences and hardly any grass to mow. The cottages were created from Dade County pine by ship’s carpenters, who built with a tongue-and-groove technique which endures.

Property assessments are high, crime is low and the clime is near flawless. The cottages are adequate for one or two friendly people to dwell in–when you can be outdoors 350 days of the year. Key West has turned into such a desirable eden for artists, the wealthy and retirees that these rustic cottages now cost at the least $125,000–if you can find one.

import cigars
Why do American tourists love to buy Cuban cigars imported to Canada when they come to Canada, but hate Cuba?

Poor little Cuba poses no threat to the Mighty USA, yet few people in the US would ever try to get thier government to lift sanctions against Cuba. Yet I have noticed hundreds of US Navy sailer boys buying Cuban cigars when they arrived in port in Victoria, BC, Canada. If Americans weren’t such hippocrites, the world would like them more. Canadians get killed in “freindly fire” in Afghanistan and it’s not even on the news in the US. But they know who fathered Anna Nicole Smith’s illigitimate kid. Go figure……

Forbidden fruit is always sweeter! I guess the same goes for cigars!

Do you want to present a cigar to your boss? If you have someone in your guest list who is a cigar smoker, you may consider presenting him with a high quality cigar. Cigars satisfy the cravings of people who love to smoke. Grown in major quantities in countries such as Brazil, Cameroon, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Indonesia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Sumatra, Philippines, and the Eastern United States, Cigars are a tightly rolled bundle of dried and fermented tobacco that is ignited; hence its smoke may be drawn into the mouth. Be sure to buy a cigar only after knowing learning about the product as it requires specific temperature to be fresh and scented.

Cigar and Temperature

Temperature of 16 C to 20 C and a relative humidity of 65% – 70% are essential for cigars to save them from drying out. For keeping cigars fresh and scented, you need to maintain a desired level of temperature and humidity. Either high or low temperature, both are harmful for them. Humidors have been introduced for preserving cigars as they are neutral and odor-free. This is because cigars have a tendency to absorb odors from their surrounding environment.

international cigarette sales
What is the best tasting cigarette brand sold in Canada?

I’m a very infrequent smoker (on average less than one a day) so it would take a while for me to try out all the brands available. So I was wondering what the best tasting cigarette brand is that is available in Toronto.
In your answer please select one Canadian brand that you think is the best, and one U.S. or international brand that is available for sale in Canada that you think is the best.

Thanks

Truth! Havent you seen the commercials?

Do cigarette holders really work to filter and make smoking ´healthyer´? I Iove smoking with them!?

MY cigarette holders have a plastic, disposable filter.

There ain’t nuthin gonna make smoking healthy, darlin’.

About the only advantage of cigarette holders is that your hands don’t end up smelling like cigarettes. Of course, since the rest of you is reeking of smoke, this makes very little difference.

cigar japan

In his essay “Sifting the Ashes,” the writer Jonathan Franzen has the following to say about the smoking habit he struggles to quit: “[W]hen you’re smoking, you’re acutely present to yourself: you step outside the unconscious forward rush of life.”

Beautiful words, with which many cigar smokers would agree. Perhaps that’s why so many of history’s most famous and best-loved writers are hard to mentally picture without a cigar: Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, Collette, George Sand, Karl Marx. Not terrible company, and they’re not alone. Some major contemporary writers are cigar smokers as well.

Paul Auster

Born in Newark, New Jersey, Paul Auster graduated from Columbia, then moved to Paris, France to eke out a living as a French-literature translator. He’s been married to two highly-regarded American writers “Siri Hustvedt (currently) and, before that, Lydia Davis, who is also known for her translation work – and his novels The New York Trilogy and Moon Palace are modern classics. He’s known for using the shape of the detective story to entertain larger questions about the meaning of identity, of language, and of existence. But his biggest fame – and his importance to smokers – came when he wrote and co-directed the movie Smoke, a landmark of American indie cinema set in a Brooklyn cigar shop.

Centered on Auggie Wren, owner of the Brooklyn Cigar Company – a sort of existential Dew Drop Inn where large cross-sections of humanity gather – it ponders the random yet seemingly meaningful connections among various people, a major theme in Auster’s writing (as well as of several other major American art films from the same period – consider Short Cuts and Magnolia). Auster’s selection of a smoke shop as his setting renders the film, which is based on one of his own short stories, especially meaningful for diehard cigar smokers.

Edward Whittemore

Here’s an artist with a colorful life indeed – he went from Yale to the Marines to the CIA, wrote for the Japan Times (it was part of his cover), lived in Crete, and wrote the massive, tripped-out series of literary espionage novels known as the Jerusalem Quartet, a work lauded by Tom Robbins as – like a bowl of hashish pudding – and by Jonathon Carroll as a book that
“makes your soul grow.” (To give you an idea: one of the books is about a 12-year-long game of poker in which the winner becomes owner of the Holy Land. That’s just the plot of one of them.) Yet the Quartet went out of print after only a few years, and Whittemore ended his days in dire poverty and obscurity, working as a photocopier for a law firm.

In 2003, eight years after his death, the Quartet was republished to all-but-universal acclaim; Jim Hougan, writing in Harper’s, called it “one of the last, best arguments against television” and Whittemore – an author of extraordinary talents. His friend Thomas C. Wallace remembers his love of cigars: “We walked the woods and fields of southern Vermont by day, sat in front of the house after dinner on solid green Adirondack chairs, drinks in hand and smoking cigars.” In a similar spirit, lovers of fine cigars should search out his one-of-a-kind novels – after all, premium cigar smokers already know that the most immediately accessible pleasures aren’t always the deepest.

John Grisham

You probably know that John Grisham is an ex-lawyer and the biggest-selling novelist of the 1990s, but you probably don’t know about his charity work, his advocacy on behalf of the wrongly imprisoned, his tireless support of less-commercially-successful writers – or the fact that it’s been said he smokes four cigars a week. In addition to writing the well-loved legal thrillers The Firm and A Time To Kill, among others (as well as such departures as A Painted House), he has done missionary and relief work in Brazil and service on the board of the Innocence Project, which uses DNA testing to exonerate the wrongfully convicted. Perhaps all of this is why he ended up on one of Cigar Aficionado’s lists of the top hundred smokers.
