cigar cutter lighter

One of the mistakes that many people make when they begin smoking cigars is cutting those cigars improperly. For those who haven’t been around the cigar culture for any length of time, this can be a confusing process. Many people try the old “bite and spit” method of getting their cigars ready. They will actually bite the end off the cigar and then spit the end onto the ground, their hand, or the ashtray. Not only is this considered rude in most circles, there is a good chance that you will ruin your cigar when you do this. You need to cut the cigar correctly, and the best way to do this is with a proper cutter or a torch cigar lighter and cutter combo.

The combination cutter is a great tool that includes not only something to cut your cigar, but also something with which you can light it. Of course, you might not have one of these cutters handy. If that is the case, then you can always resort to a pair of scissors or even a knife. If you choose to use a knife, be careful so that you don’t cut yourself by mistake.

You can use other items to cut your cigars ” everything from pocketknives to scissors is workable. However, you will find that the professional cutters simply work much better and will provide you with a much cleaner cut. When you have a clean cut, you can be sure that the cigar will be easier to smoke and you won’t inadvertently ruin it.

Using the cutter is easy. It has a blade and a plunger. You put the end of the cigar that would go into your mouth into the hole of the cutter and then press the plunger down. Make sure that you use a single, fluid motion when you depress the plunger, as that will give you the best cut possible. You can then discard the end of the cigar in the ashtray or the trash. When you have the proper tools at your disposal, you will find that cutting the cigar is just a simple matter.

You can find cigar cutters as well as the combination cutter/lighter in the same places that you would find other accessories. Many options are available online, and you can find them in a variety of styles to suit your needs. If you take cigar smoking seriously, you can’t do without one.

What’s more, if you can get us a nice cigar accessory tool with some cigars thrown in – the entire better!  I have some great suggestions for the 2009 Holiday Season that can get you out of a pinch and that I’m certain any cigar lover would want!

First, Diamond Crown is a premium cigar maker and they also make some of the nicest accessories on the market.  They’ve released a 2009 Edition of their leather traveling case with 3 cigars included.   The leather on this case is very soft and feels exquisite and the cigars are some of the most sought after cigars on the market.

Casual cigar owners often ask themselves: is a humidor really necessary? The answer is: only if you care about the quality and taste of your cigars.

After all, for some smokers, the after-dinner cigar is more symbolic than anything – a conspicuous display, perhaps, of taste and leisure, or a social or familial ritual. If, however, you smoke for taste – which is the best reason to smoke – you should probably invest in a humidor: a specially-constructed box designed to maintain your cigars in near-70% humidity and at a proper temperature when they’re not being smoked.

To understand why humidors are so important, remember what a cigar essentially is. It’s a set of rolled-up tobacco leaves that have been cut, dried, cured, and fermented, then maintained at a very slight but essential level of moisture. If the cigar dries out completely – as can happen in open air, at the wrong temperature, or in low humidity – it loses its taste. If it’s kept in an airtight environment, on the other hand, the necessary low level of moisture will, over time, cause mold. A cigar requires a very special set of conditions in order to maintain optimum taste.

The humidity in which cigars are stored is important because of the specific conditions in which most tobacco is grown. The natural climate for most such areas is in the neighborhood of 70% relative humidity; the tobacco plant has evolved for such a climate. Thus, humidity control is the sine qua non of a humidor – without that, it’s not a humidor but a box with cigars in it. Humidors are able to maintain a relatively consistent humidity level partly because of the relatively porous wood used to line them (Spanish cedar and Honduran mahogany are popular choices for this reason).

Most humidors also, of course, have some sort of device that maintains moisture levels; some use hygrometers, which indicate interior humidity. (Digital hygrometers tend to be more accurate, though they lack the old-fashioned appeal of dial hygrometers.)

When packing your humidor, make sure you leave some room between the cigars to allow air to circulate between them. (Again, you want to avoid an airtight fit, which would promote mold. On the other hand, too much empty space will allow that all-important humidity level to drop. Check on your cigars frequently, at least once a week, to ensure that nothing needs to be adjusted). The cigars should, at best, exude a small amount of oil when stored; this is a sign that the humidor is working. Slight amounts of water can be added if cigars start to dry out.

If your cigars suffer an attack of tobacco beetles – a species of beetle that preys on tobacco and can sometimes bore through a humidor – you’ve probably been keeping the temperature in the box a touch too high (tobacco beetles flourish at temperatures over 75 degrees.) Remove the affected cigars and put them in your freezer for 48 hours, then move them to your refrigerator for another day, following which they should be safely returnable to the humidor.

Spanish-cedar humidors are a popular choice. This wood, as mentioned above, holds moisture well, maintaining humidity, and it holds an aroma many consumers find pleasant and complementary to that of the cigars themselves. It’s also slightly favored for keeping tobacco beetles out, and it doesn’t warp in high humidity.

When you buy your humidor, “season” it by applying a moist cloth to the interior wood and then leaving a small, closed container of water inside the humidor for 12 hours. If the humidor “drinks up” most of the water, leaving the container near-empty after 12 hours, repeat the process for another 24 hours. Once the water stops evaporating, the humidor is ready for your cigars!

cigar humidor homemade
Problem with homemade humidor humidity?

I have a homemade humidor, made of an airtight wooden box. I lined the inside with cedar wood that I got from breaking up cigar boxes, and I have a humidity puck that I made from some florist’s oasis. I mixed some propelyne (sp) glycol with water at a 50-50 mix, but my humidity doesn’t stay at approx. 70. I’m having to soak the oasis every 3 days and re water the cedar wood to keep it at 70 for 3 days. If I don’t, it drops to 60 and stabilizes there. I’ve been adding only distilled water, as from what I understand, the more glycol, the less humidity it creates What am I doing wrong and how can I keep the humidity at 70 for more than 3 days?

most of those pucks dont work well .. look for the jars that have the “crystals” in them.. the retain the moisture better… also make sure you are keeping your humidor out of sight.. the more exposure to the air the quicker the de-humidifying happens

cigar humidor

Cigar is a cylindrical roll of tobacco. It is used in smoking with a wrapper leaf. Always, most expansive leaves are used in cigars. In terms of characteristics, it is stronger in odor and smoke. It bears pleasant flavor and good burning properties. As per historical evidences, cigar was introduced by Maya Indians in 10th century. Christopher Columbus and other explorers have revealed this fact in their notes.
?    Gustave Bock was a Dutch immigrant. He owned a cigar factory in Cuba in the 1830s. It is believed that it was the first to place a paper band around his cigars. It was just a paper ring with his signature.
?    Very soon, it prominently flourished and became very profitable business. However, now cigar rolling has become mechanized but still few prestigious companies adhere with traditional stuffs. They do mention phrase on the boxes such as ‘totalmente a mano (totally by hand) or hecho a mano (made by hand)’.

A glimpse upon manufacturing of premium Cigars
?    At first tobacco leaves pass through curing process and it takes approximately 25 to 45 days which depends upon climatic condition and construction of sheds or barns used to store harvested tobacco as well.
?    After curing, second process is fermentation. Under this process, major characteristics like flavor, burning, and aroma are primarily brought out in the leaf.
?    Once after properly being aged, leaves are used as filler. Under this process, these are continuously moistened and ensured proper utilization each leaf as per the quality.
?    Few premium brands cigars (viz. Acid Cigars, Padron Cigars, Ashton Cigars, Dominican Cigars) use special varieties of tobacco. For instance, long leaves are thoroughly used in long filler cigars which are supposed as higher quality of cigar.
?    For long term storage of cigar, lower storage temperature viz. 40C/400F is recommended. There are special storage boxes available in the market like wooden box or humidor. Such containers carefully control ideal conditions for longer period.

Packaging of cigars
?    The outermost portion or wrapper comes from the widest part of the plant and its color in itself speaks a lot about character and flavor of cigar. There is also a myth prevailing in the cigar market that the darker the wrapper, the fuller the flavor. One must keep in the mind that darkness refers to sweetness on the other hand light one means dryness to the taste.
?    Fillers are available in two forms either short or long. Recently an addition has been made of medium filler cigars. There is a special category of filler known as ‘sandwich or Cuban sandwich’. It is made by rolling short leaf inside long outer leaf.
?    Cigars are prominently categorized on the basis of shape and size and all together known as ‘vitola’. Few names under this category are Parejo, Figurado and little cigars.

After the development of printing industry, cigar got more vibrant looks and cigar companies prominently focused on branding of their products. During World War I, there was fall down in its popularity. But, it was remained for the very short span.

Cigar Travel Humidors

Cigars are the best, they are the absolute perfect leaisure time accessory. Tons of options and flavors and brands, from all over the world. And the longer we smoke cigars, the MORE we love them and the more we WANT to learn about them.

And they get BETTER with age.

As long as they are taken care of and stored correctly – in a humidor.

Cigar Travel Humidors – Complete Info and Reviews For Top Travel Humidors

When cigars are stored inside of a quality humidor they will not only stay fresh and completely smokable – but they will GET BETTER. And there is no reason why our stogies should suffer in quality or smokability just because we have to leave home for any extended period of time -or even if we enjoy taking them to work or the office everyday.

Selecting A Quality Cigar Travel Humidor

Usually when we are choosing a travel humidor, its best to treat it like a regular full size humidor that we have at home. Along with a great finish and an aestheticly pleasing look and design, we want a cigar travel humidor that will do its job.

In those respects our humidor should be looked at and judged in a similar fashion to selecting our Primary Humidor.

But there are some differences in our travel humidor – mainly differences in size and outter shell , for protection reasons.

We want the travel humidor to be easily portable, and it should be able to protect our best cigars from any type of damage or air or liquids -depending on where you are going and how long you will be traveling.

Here are some of the main things to look for and evaluate:

  • Seal or Lid – Should not slam shut (if your travel humidor has a closing or hinged lid) Although its smaller, its still needs that whooosh sound upon closing. No air should be able to seep in  -no matter what.
  • Casing or Shell – Personally I never sacrificed style just because the travel humidor was smaller or used less frequently. And we should still select a Cigar Humidor that has a proper casing. It can be aluminum or wood. Some even use leather. It all depends on a)how many cigars b)how long you travel c)how often you plan on using your cigar travel humidor
  • Lining – Make sure that the humidor has places for each cigar to fit nicely.NO LOOSE CIGARS while traveling. It is a must to have fingered lining -as well as proper materials like spanish cedar or something similar to that.(and a nice insulated material is always a bonus)
  • Humidification Device – Any respectable travel humidor will have its own humidifier. They are actually a simple device -but it makes all the difference for thosee that are doing any regular or long term travel.

You can find out more information on Humidor Humidifiers and great Cigar Travel Humidors as well at the “Cigar Travel Humidor” website.

There are  even some greatreviews for Travel Humidors thatcost less than $30- and they come with Humidifers and great Finishes too -which is quite hard to find-

An Underground Storage Tank (UST), in United States environmental law, is a tank and any underground piping connected to the tank that has at least 10 percent of its combined volume underground.

Tank types
Underground storage tanks generally fall into four different types:
Steel/aluminum tank, made by manufacturers in most states and conforming to standards set by the Steel Tank Institute.
Composite overwrapped, a metal tank (aluminum/steel) with filament windings like glass fiber/aramid or carbon fiber or a plastic compound around the metal cylinder for corrosion protection and to form an interstitial space.
Tanks made from composite material, fiberglass/aramid or carbon fiber with a metal liner (aluminum or steel). See metal matrix composite.
Composite tanks such as carbon fiber with a polymer liner (thermoplastic). See rotational molding and fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP).
Petroleum underground storage tank

Leaking underground storage tanks are one source of toxic liability
USTs, used to store petroleum, are regulated in the United States to prevent release of petroleum and contamination of groundwater, they are used throughout North America at automobile filling stations and many have leaked, allowing petroleum to contaminate the soil and groundwater.
Many USTs installed before 1980 consisted of bare steel pipes, which corrode over time, and may eventually result in leakage. Faulty installation and inadequate handling may also cause leaks.
In 1984, in the United States, the Congress developed laws to minimize and prevent environmental damage, by charging owners with the task of verifying, maintaining and, if necessary, cleaning up sites damaged by petroleum contamination.
Legislation requiring owners to locate, remove, upgrade, or replace underground storage tanks became effective December 24, 1989. Each State was given authority to establish a program within its own jurisdiction to set up a program to compensate owners for the cleanup of underground petroleum leaks, to set standards and licensing for installers, and to register and inspect underground tanks.
Most upgrades to USTs consisted of the installation of corrosion control (cathodic protection), overfill protection (to prevent overfills of the tank during tank filling operations), spill containment (to catch spills when filling), and leak detection for both the tank and piping.
Many USTs were removed without replacement during the 10-year program and many thousands of old underground tanks were replaced with newer tanks made of corrosion resistant materials (such as fiberglass) and constructed as double walled tanks to catch leaks from the inner tanks and to give an interstitial space to accommodate leak detection sensors. Piping was replaced during the same period with much of the new piping being double wall construction and made of fiberglass or plastic materials.
Tank monitoring systems capable of detecting leaks as small as 0.1 gallons-per-hour were installed and other methods were adopted to alert the tank operator of leaks and potential leaks.
Regulations included a requirement that UST cathodic protection systems be tested by a cathodic protection expert (minimum every 3 years) and that systems be monitored to ensure continued compliant operation.
Many owners, who previously stored fuel in underground tanks, went to above ground tanks to enable closer environmental monitoring of fuel storage and to reduce costs. Many states, however, do not permit above ground storage of motor fuel for resale to the public.
The U.S. EPA Underground Storage Tank Program is generally considered to have been very successful – with the national inventory of underground tanks reduced by more than half and most of the rest having been replaced or upgraded to much safer standards. But of the approximately 1 million underground storage tanks in the United States as of 2008, most of which are filled with some type of fuel, an estimated 500,000 were leaking.
