I already know that Humidors are usually constructed with a Spanish Ceder veneer on the inside or Mahogany veneer.
I am planning on building one just big enough for 20-30 cigars. I will be constructing it with the aid of my Uncle who has been doing this sort of thing for 40+ years, I myself have been doing some cabinetry and other constructed for at least 5 years.
Can I just build the whole thing out of Ceder? I don’t think Spanish ceder will be available to me at the local home depot.
What is this going to cost me for materials?
I am basically aware of everything Wikipedia has to say on the subject of Humidors.
But Wikipedia lacks personal experience.
Build it out of Mahogany and line it with Spanish Cedar (which is a form of mahogany) – but NOT veneer. Use at least 1/4″ thick SC.
You will not find Spanish Cedar at THD but at a specialty lumber shop – most likely online, and it is quite expensive.
Humidors are not airtight – the rule of thumb for a good closure is the dollar bill test. Place a dollar bill on the edge and close the lid. You should be able to just be able to pull the bill out in a smooth motion without any grabbing and it shouldn’t be too removed too loosely.
It’s a humidor, no it’s a server. It’s a Servidor!
Celluloid is generally regarded as the first modern plastic. It was introduced in 1871 by the Celluloid Manufacturing Company of Albany, NY. The use of celluloid began with the manufacturing of billiard balls and was intended as a replacement for ivory. However, by the late 1800s it was used for all sorts of products from billiard balls to bobbin lace prickers, bracelets, button hooks, buttons, cameo brooches, cameo earrings, charm bracelets, dolls, folding toothpicks, fountain pen bodies, guitar picks, hair combs, hand mirrors, hat pins, knife handles, letter openers, match safes, mechanical pencils, money clips, necklaces, paperweights, pin-packs, pocket mirrors, ring boxes, rulers, shoehorns, stick pins, tatting shuttles, thimbles, toys, vanity boxes and many other items.
The celluloid products mentioned above were made between the late 1800s and 1940s. Buttons were made by the millions for use on clothing and jewelry such as brooches, earrings, bracelets and necklaces also saw wide spread use. Vintage fountain pen bodies made of celluloid are a very popular collectible today.
Some of these products were advertising giveaways distributed by every kind of business all across the United States. The most popular advertising celluloid giveaways were pin-backs and pocket mirrors. The principal producers of advertising celluloid pin-back buttons were the Whitehead and Hoag Company of Newark, NJ, American Artworks of Cochocton, OH, The St. Louis Button Company and Bastian Brothers of Rochester, NY. This same group of manufacturers, along with two others in Chicago, the Partisian Novelty Company and the Cruver Manufacturing Company, used celluloid for the backs of advertising pocket mirrors.
Celluloid was not the best of all materials to use for the prized collectibles, as it was very flammable. Table Tennis balls are the only products known to use celluloid today.
The best place to find vintage celluloid products and advertising celluloid products is eBay.

There are several factors that can cause lung disease. Smoking is a major cause of lung disease, if you smoke, talk with your doctor about ways they can help you to quit smoking. If you live with someone who smokes, try to get them to quit, or at least ask them to have enough respect to smoke outside. Being around second hand smoke can be just as dangerous as smoking yourself, and remember that smoke include not only cigarettes, but cigars and pipes as well. Exposure to radon gas can also increase your chances of developing lung disease. Radon is a gas that occurs in the soil and rocks, and can damage the lungs, leading to lung cancer. People who work in mines have a greater chance of being exposed to radon, and in some parts of the States., radon is found in homes. You can measure radon in your home with a kit you can buy at most hardware stores. Lung disease can also be caused by asbestos. Asbestos are a natural fiber that comes from minerals. The fibers break apart easily and can find there way into your lungs. Once these fibers are in your lungs, they can stick and lead to lung cancer. Asbestos are found commonly in jobs like shipbuilding, asbestos mining, car repair and insulation work. People who work in such jobs should wear protective clothing and face masks. Pollution can also cause lung disease. Research has shown a link between lung cancer and certain air pollutants, such as car exhaust. While there is not much you can do to protect your lungs from air pollution, you can help by trying not to litter and driving less or taking the bus.
Types of lung disease include, asthma, bronchitis and cystic fibrosis. Each of these diseases effect the tubes that lead to the lungs, making it hard for a person to inhale enough oxygen. Other diseases include Respiratory failure, pulmonary edema, pulmonary embolism, and pulmonary hypertension all of which effect the normal exchange of gases from the lungs to the blood. Pneumonia and tuberculosis are viral infections of the membrane surrounding the lungs. Stiffening of the lungs is another problem that is caused by drugs, poisons, infections or radiation. Stiffening of the lungs is when the tissue surrounding the lungs becomes stiff, making it hard to receive oxygen. Finally, there is lung cancer. Lung cancer is rising, especially in young people and women. The number one cause of lung cancer is smoking.
Common symptoms of lung disease include trouble breathing and shortness of breath or a feeling as if you cannot get enough air. Many people who have lung disease complain of a persistent cough that will not go away, coughing up blood, or having pain when inhaling or exhaling. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, see your doctor as soon as possible.

During the Civil War there were many notes issued by the Confederate States of America of interest to Numismatic and Civil War collectors. Confederate notes or Confederate currency are unique in the fact that their chief difference is in the values, engravers, lithographers, printer names, figures, designs, colors, water marks, serial letters and other distinguishing features.
The first of these were issued at the first capitol of the Confederacy, which was at Montgomery, Alabama under the Act of March 9, 1861. All other after that date were issued from a new capitol at Richmond, VA. Over 60 different notes were issued from 1861 to 1864 in values of $1000.00, $500.00, $100.00, $50.00, $20.00, $10.00, $5.00, $2.00, $1.00, and 50 cents. The Confederate issues may be compared with the continental issues, during the war of independence. At the end of the Civil War, Confederate notes were of little value. However, today the value of these notes are far from worthless. Prices range from under $100.00 for most to $10,000 or more.
These Confederate notes represented the pay of the confederate veterans. The Confederate soldiers received their pay in these notes. Some of these notes bore the statement approximately as follows: “Six months after a ratification of a treaty of peace between the United States of America and the Confederate States of America, pay to the bearer the sun of ______ dollars, with interest at 8 percent.” As there was no treaty of peace favorable to the Confederates, these notes lost their value upon the unconditional surrender of the Confederates to General Grant. Many of the wealthier Southerners had invested all their money in these notes and were for the most part bankrupt at the end of the war.

We often collect seashells along the shoreline, either to simply admire them, or, in lots of cases, we just gather them up, as we like the texture of them. I often save them with the idea that I will most likely do something arty with them at a later date. Projects with shells always seem pretty popular just like canvas art.
In my opinion boxes are fairly a good option, as you can utilize these to collect things in. For example, jewellery, little treasures, letters, needles and pins, in fact, any number of items really. What you intend to use them for is reliant on the size of the box, obviously.
There are all types of wood and paper mache boxes too, readily obtainable in the stores and art suppliers today. Some are designed specially for people to decorate themselves. Obviously what materials you require to do this will depend entirely on the sizing of your chosen article.
However, what you choose to cover your box does not have to stop at seashells. For example, if you are using the ocean theme, why not incorporate some fake starfish, small beads that will reflect, small glass nuggets are lovely, as are miniature pearls and even one or two shiny sequins. This will add a feel of realism!
At this point, if you do not have access to a local shoreline you can as a rule buy various shells in the stores, as a result this should not be too much of a dilemma. You might even use a bit of raffia to look a bit like driftwood. There are sure to be an assortment of boxes you could use for this, ranging from old empty cigar boxes, ready prepared wooden chests for embellishment and even linen boxes.
Hence, now I have given you a few suggestions let’s go on, you can always alter your box consequently! As for your basic needs for this project, you will require a wooden or paper mache box to work this on. Added to this a sponge, which is fairly small, a few acrylic paints, plus a paintbrush, craft glaze, a palette to contain your paints and a suitable adhesive that will stick well.
You may decide to use a different paintbrush to apply the glue and then, yes, there will be any further items to elaborate your box and an assortment of seashells of a suitable size for your task. Hence how do you begin? You might ask!
To begin with, pick up your sponge, dampen it, and after that squeeze out any excess water. Now take your palette and dispense small amounts of paint into the tray. Should you be working on a chest type of box, in the paint tray for colours, I would probably select some gold, a sand colour, purple, different types of blue and maybe a green.
Take hold of the sponge and you should at this point dab on layers of paint to in essence cover the box, both inside and out. When you do this you can actually see how many varying shades you can really produce. Once you have achieved this leave it somewhere to dry.
Next stage, fish out your seashells and have a go working out a design to put on to your box. Carry on by using your paintbrush to apply glue all over the box before moving on to conscientiously press the shells down into the glue firmly.
There is no reason why you cannot cover the entire box with shells. However, you can dot your other trimmings here and there, especially if you are trying to impart the feeling of a real treasure trunk!
Clearly then, this needs to dry out before you can subsequently apply a coating of the craft varnish. This then will give a soft sheen appearance to the box. I am certain that at the finish you will be very happy with the outcome.
Not just this, I am sure that your friends and family will think that this is, in fact, delightful. They will also be hoping that you will make one for them in the not too distant future. However, now you have tried this, you could basically do this to other items, such as wooden picture frames or even around mirrors!

is there an alternative box i could use to make cigar box guitar?
because i don’t smoke and i don’t plan on starting
You don’t have to smoke the cigars to obtain the box. Any cigar shop will have plenty of boxes to choose from. Some give them away, others charge a buck or two for them.
