About the city

The crowd is attracted to sparkling ski slopes of the Alps, sunlit vineyards and sun-baked beaches of this beautiful country. France is a country which draws more tourists than any other country. It is easy to see why this is the case given France’s great reputation for fine wines, good food, high fashion and relaxed lifestyle. But while France is undoubtedly a place to eat and drink till your heart is content, there’s much more to this fascinating country than only cutting-edge cuisines. Spring is the best time to be here, and those interested in winter sports can drop at the Alps and Pyrenees with some polar gear. The summers are very hot and winters are moderate. An all-weather coat and pair of comfortable shoes are a must. Women, especially, should carry cocktail dresses as some of the restaurants ask for it. When visiting any religious site, refrain from wearing sleeveless shirt and shorts, as they are disliked at such places.

Culture

English is widely spoken here, although French is the official language. Handshaking is
customary greeting and women should be kissed on both cheeks and should be addressed
as Monsieur or Madame. French people are popularly known for their like for stylish sportswear
and of course perfumes. Nudism is allowed on some beaches only. Social functions, fine
restaurants, and clubs call for more formal dressing. When at a formal dinner, wait till the host
gestures to start the dinner. Smoking is banned in public places.

Site Seeing

Paris, the city of love, is a massive city with many attractions in reachable distance thanks to the
highly efficient public transport system. It boasts of more than 80 museums and 200 arts
galleries. A trip to Disney land and the magnificent Eiffel tower will make the trip worthwhile.
The attractive tourists spots are the Arc de triomphe which spans over the tomb of an
unknown soldier, the forbidding gothic architecture of the Notre Dame cathedral, the picturesque
Sacre Coeur, to Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, the Moulin Rouge and boat tours along the
Seine. Get the Carte Musees-Monuments pass, which gives access to 70 monuments and
museums.

Shopping

Although service tax is included in the bill, a humble tip won’t cost much. An extra dollar can be given as tip to the waiter. A tip of $2 can be left for the bus drivers.
Electricity

220-volt, 50-cycle AC current.
Getting There

The national airline that operates here is Air France. Many low-cost airlines, too, provide services from UK. Paris-Charles de Gaulle also known as Roissy-Charles de Gaulle is the major airport of France, which is 23km away from the city. Coaches, taxis, limousines services are provided at the airport. The railway facility provided by the airport, claims to reach all the terminals within eight minutes. These trains run 24 hours. cigar cognac
Do you think the host of Survivor…?

Do you think the producers of Survivor think about the million dollars that the contestant compete in as a joke? I can picture Mark Burnett or Jeff Probst sitting in a Jacuzzi in China somewhere having a cigar and cognac by his side in a beautiful estate thinking…

“those poor bas tards…working so hard for a million. You couldn’t pay me a million to be in their shoes.”

Well I guess NBC had to pay him several millions a season just to host, lol.

Well, I guess that’s one way of looking at it. Another way might be that they are providing an opportunity for these people, many of whom are trying to break into Hollywood or the entertainment industry in some aspect, to gain some really great exposure as well a 1 in what, 20? 30? chance at getting a million dollars? I mean, that’s life changing money and very few people get those kinds of odds at being able to achieve that kind of money ever, even if they worked all their lives. Putting in a mere 30 days of wilderness living for $1 million is not so bad. Don’t forget, because it’s only on once a week it seems a lot more dragged out for us the viewers than it actually is.

pairing cigars and scotch
how do you pair cigars with alcohol?

Like scotch would you want a bold cigar? Or does it depend on the brand?

It really depends.

I have favorite cigars, but I have certain drinks that I can have with pretty much any cigar. For instance: New Castle, Guiness, Cognac, Dr Pepper, Root Beer, Coca Cola, Port Wine, or Scotch.

I can get superficial when it comes to the drink I pair with my cigar. I usually group a good Cuban with great Cognac or Single Malt.

It all varies on location and situation.

cigar and scotch pairing

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

The cigar has long been seen as a luxury of the rich and famous.  Pictures of well-heeled men drawing on different types of cigars and nursing a glass of aged brandy have been well documented and immortalized in movies and TV.  If you are getting curious about cigars and want to loosen up with a stogie and an adult beverage after a hard day’s work, here are a few hints to get you going.

Traditionally, cigars have been mated with a hard liquor.  Popular liquors include brandy, rum, and whiskey.  It has been debated that good cigars should always be matched with a potent drink that has a suggestion of sweetness.  Cigar smokers have long savored these popular unions.  For ages, the idea of pairing different types of cigars with beer has gone overlooked.

But why overlook good old beer?  Recently, the trend has been to pair cigars with various varieties of beer as it seems that as cigars have entered the mainstream.  What better way to enjoy a puff of this newly popularized delicacy than to mate it with beer?  Pairing a better cigar with a satisfactory beer is not an easy feat, but when attained is well worth the effort.  Much of the pairing off has to do with your expertise.  If you are a beginner, you will in all likelihood need help in mating your particular cigar with the proper beer.  If you have a more knowledgeable taste, and you recognize what you like, you can probably make a connection between certain types of cigars and a great beer.

As cigars are so strong and flavorsome, one of the challenges is to find a beer that complements the strength of many types of cigars.  For that reason, many types of cigars will match nicely with a good barley wine or a single malt scotch.  If your cigar can be distinguished as spicy, woody, with a hint of cedar, try matching it with a barley wine.  The fruity tinge of a barely wine ought to complement nicely with the pungent flavor of your cigar.  The combination of a savory cigar with a somewhat fruity beer can also create a taste that heightens the qualities in each significantly.

If you don’t have a clue as to which flavor combinations could work, try out different ones.  First, come up with the types of cigars that you like.  Then try to distinguish the characteristics that you enjoy about it.  Only then find a beer whose flavor you think might go well with the cigar.  Many unthinkable combinations have been arrived at this way.

Do you think we will move forward to re-establish diplomatic ties to Cuba?

When will we be able to get real Cuban cigars legally? Do you think those hot night clubs are still in Havanna? What ever happened to Elian Gonzalez?

I think that time will come soon. So many Americans have real interests in Cuba. Fidel Castro is the problem.

cigar malt
How does single malt scotch compare to whiskey and bourbon?

I love quality cigars, and a lot of people who like cigars also really enjoy single malt scotch, so I find it only makes sense that I try some.
The closest thing I have had is Jack Daniels Whiskey and Seagrams Bourbon. With 3-4 drops of water and while taking small sips, Jack Daniels was decent. Seagrams, though I haven’t had it with water, wasn’t very enjoyable. Is this what single malt scotch tastes like?

No, scotch tastes very different from bourbon or Jack. All three are whisk(e)y’s, but they’re made from different ingredients with different methods.

wine and cigar pairing

The cigar has long been viewed as a luxury of the rich and powerful.  Images of well-to-do men puffing on a stogie and swirling a glass of good brandy have been well documented and memorialized in films and TV.  If you are just becoming interested in cigars and would like to relax with a stogie and drink after a long day’s work, here are a few tips to get you started.

Traditionally, the cigar has been paired with a strong drink.  Popular spirits include rum, brandy, or whiskey.  Some argue that a good cigar should always be paired with a strong drink that has a hint of sweetness.  Indeed, cigar smokers have long enjoyed these popular pairings.  For years, the idea of pairing cigars with beer has gone overlooked.  But why overlook good old beer?  Recently, the trend has been to pair cigars with various varieties of beer.  It seems that as cigars have entered the mainstream, it has been democratized and popularized.  What better way to enjoy a puff of this newly popularized treat than to pair it with beer?

Pairing a good cigar with a good beer is not an easy feat, but when accomplished, it is well worth the effort.  Much of the pairing has to do with your experience level.  If you are a novice, you will probably need help in pairing your specific cigar with an appropriate beer.  If you have a more experienced palate, and you know what you like, you can probably make connections between certain types of cigars and beers.

Because cigars are so strong and flavorful, one of the challenges in pairing is to find a beer that complements the intensity of most cigars.  Most cigars will pair nicely with a good barely wine or a single malt scotch.  If your cigar can be described as woody, spicy, with hints of cedar, try pairing it with a barley wine.  The fruity hint of barely wine should complement nicely with the spicy flavor of your cigar.  The combination of a spicy cigar with a slightly fruity beer can create an overall creaminess that enhances the flavors of each significantly.

If you have no clue as to what flavor combinations might work, experiment.  First, find a cigar that you enjoy.  Try to identify the characteristics that you enjoy about it.  Then, find a beer whose flavors you think might ‘match’ or complement the cigar.  Many incredible discoveries have been made in much this same way.

The V & A Waterfront is a microcosm of all of the best parts of Cape Town life. It started as a simple extension to the harbor, but has now grown into one of the number one attractions in the city. If you were not the out-and-about type, it would be possible to rent a hotel room and never leave the V & A Waterfront at all! Attractions include luxury accommodation, restaurants, pubs, theater, live music (especially jazz) throughout the day and a large mall packed with a mixture of designer stores and local crafts.

If you are thinking of staying at the V & A Waterfront, remember that when a development goes up in such a small place on the water, you pay a premium. Still, the hotels and apartments that are available are some of the finest in the city, and you definitely get what you pay for. Both the Victoria & Alfred Hotel and the Cape Grace have worldwide reputations as two of the finest places to stay in Cape Town. Both offer five star accommodation and direct access to all of the attractions that the waterfront has to offer.

At the Victoria & Alfred, expect to pay around $100 – $200 per night per person sharing, and at the Cape Grace expect anywhere from $200 – $1000 for the same deal. If you don’t want to stretch your budget this far on your accommodation, but would still like to stay in a Waterfront apartment, the Breakwater Lodge offers luxury accommodation at a reasonable rate. Rooms here are available from $25 – $75 per night, and the hotel is just as close to all of the attractions as the others.

The V & A Waterfront is extremely tourist friendly, and the Tourism Center that operates here provides info about not only the Waterfront, but about any and all Cape Town tourist destinations. Open top buses and private taxis can be booked from here, and an information booth can be found just about anywhere in the Victoria and Alfred Mall or around the Waterfront.

If you find yourself hanging around the V & A Waterfront by night, don’t despair – there is no need to go anywhere else! Tourists and locals alike mingle in one of the many restaurants and pubs. For relaxing cocktails overlooking the water, try the Alba Lounge. If you like the finer things in life and you want them at low local prices, the Bascule Whiskey and Wine bar (voted best bar in the Waterfront, 2007) offers anything from cocktails to imported cigars and fine cognac.

For the young at heart there is also a lot to do at the V & A Waterfront after sunset, and everyone will enjoy the legendary Paulaner Brauhaus situated near the Clock Tower. This German-style beer restaurant serves excellent, hearty German cuisine, and they brew their own delicious beers (for only $2 each!) Ferryman’s pub is always popular with the locals, and Mitchell’s Scottish Ale House and Brewery are responsible for the Mitchell’s draft you will find anywhere around the Waterfront.
