health risks cigar smoking

Most people know that smoking is dangerous, yet despite knowing about the dangerous effects of smoking on their personal health, many smokers never quit. They rationalize their habit by thinking that they are only hurting themselves when they smoke. However, smoking also affects the health of people who do not smoke. Friends, children, family, co-workers, and even bystanders may suffer health effects from passive smoking.

What is passive smoking? You may be familiar the term “secondhand smoke” to describe smoke inhaled by someone who is near a smoker. Secondhand smoke is a combination of smoke from a burning pipe, cigarette, or cigar, and the smoke exhaled by a smoker. It often contains higher amounts of damaging chemicals than inhaled smoke, for example, twice as much tar and nicotine. This puts people exposed to secondhand smoke at a higher risk of smoking related diseases and health problems.

Research into the effects of passive smoking on health show increased risks of heart disease, lung disease, and various ailments for people constantly exposed to secondhand smoke. Statistics on passive smoking show a link between passive smoking and cancer, with people exposed to secondhand smoke having an increased risk of lung cancer and heart disease. It is not uncommon for a nonsmoking child or spouse of a smoker to develop illnesses associated with smoking because of constant exposure to secondhand smoke.

Secondhand smoke is especially bad for infants and children. Infants and children exposed to secondhand smoke have a higher risk of respiratory diseases and other respiratory illnesses. Children who have asthma are at a higher risk of having frequent attacks. Secondhand smoke can also be responsible for raising a pregnant woman’s risk of having a miscarriage or a premature baby.

Due to the negative impacts of passive smoking, smoking has been banned in many public places, such as restaurants and bars. Secondhand smoke can also be a cause for concern in the workplace. Workers who inhale secondhand smoke have an increased risk of illness and even have more absences from work. This has led many offices to ban smoking on the premises, and some areas have even passed ordinances against smoking at work. Amongst jobs with a ban on smoking, employers report more productive employees and fewer absences from work.

Typically, most smokers begin seeking ways to quit smoking out of concern for their family’s health. There are many ways to quit smoking, and one of the easiest ways is through the use of a quit smoking hypnotherapy program. Hypnotherapy programs for quitting smoking are developed specifically to help smokers quit smoking without going through withdrawal. They are particularly effective because they help smokers fight the psychological aspect of the addiction, which is the hardest part to overcome.

Self-hypnosis programs are developed to teach people hypnosis techniques to help quit smoking. One of the best things about these programs is the fact that smokers learn how to quit smoking without experiencing withdrawal. Hypnosis techniques can diminish or even completely eliminate withdrawal symptoms associated with quitting smoking. Another good thing is that since people learn how to perform hypnotherapy techniques on themselves, they do not have to worry about having a relapse. If they ever want to smoke, they just recall and utilize the techniques that helped them quit.

Hypnotherapy produces many effects to help people quit smoking. It is an excellent tool for eliminating smoking cravings while also functioning as a relaxation aid to reduce stress. It also acts as a motivational aid to eliminate the psychological addiction to smoking. This combination of effects gives hypnotherapy its effectiveness in helping people to quit smoking for good.

The benefits of quitting smoking include better health for the quitting smoker as well as for friends, co-workers, and family. People who are looking to quit for the sake of their loved ones can turn to hypnosis for a useful and easy-to-use tool for quitting. Anyone can learn hypnotic techniques for quitting from an instructional hypnosis program, and hypnotherapy for smoking cessation has a high rate of effectiveness because it makes quitting smoking easier and faster.

Is it possible to take supplements to minimize ill effects of cigars?

There are enough rich aristocrats smoking cigars who have a lot more to lose than a middle-class worker like myself. And if they smoke cigars, it would seem they know what they are doing as they are so rich and apparently smart. So, are there supplements or vitamins I could take before/after smoking a cigar to minimize the oral cancer effects and the cells getting corrupted?

Yes, vitamin C. Of course, best of all would be if you just didn’t smoke ;-p

Our diet may increase the risks of cancer in different ways: • Carcinogens (substances that cause cancer) • High fat and excess calories • Salted food • Low fiber • Alcohol • Pesticides (No clear evidence in humans). Their role in increasing the risk of cancer has been extensively studied but different outcomes may be seen, depending on how the study was carried out. By and large, some conclusions were made about the risk and much study is continuing in this field of dietary influence on the cancer.

Dietary Carcinogens

Naturally present carcinogens: An example of this is ‘Aflatoxin’, a mycotoxin produced by fungi. Grains and nuts can be contaminated by fungus, which then produce chemicals called aflatoxins. They are known to cause liver cancer in Africa and the Far East, especially in people who are carriers of hepatitis antigens. Carcinogens forming during food preparation: Polycyclic hydrocarbons, such as benzopyrenes, are formed during barbecuing meat on an open fire (e.g. preparing jerked chicken). These polycyclic hydrocarbons are also one of the main constituents in cigarette smoke that cause lung cancer). The traditionally high intake of fried and broiled food, such as meats, can increase the risk of breast, distal colon, prostate and pancreas cancers. Several studies showed that populations that eat fried or broiled meats have a relative risk greater than 2 (deviation from median) for colon and breast cancer. More than 20 such chemicals have been identified. They are present in fairly small amounts, but their action is promoted, an effect associated with n-6 polyunsaturated oils such as corn or safflower oil at 30-40% of energy in animal and human studies. A lower fat intake, 15-22% of energy, dramatically decreases those effect.

Preservatives and coloring agents added to food: (Need some more tests to establish this relationship). Food colorings are added to increase the appeal of the food but not all are good for us. An example is “butter yellow”. Artificial sweeteners (like saccharine & cyclamates) and preservatives which produce nitrosamines are known to cause bladder and stomach cancers respectively.

Some substances are converted in to carcinogens: Nitrosamines are formed from sodium nitrite. Sodium nitrite is present in drinking water and vegetables.

High fat diet and excess calories

People that consume food containing high levels of fat are more likely to have colon, prostate, breast and pancreatic cancers. Low incidence of nutritionally-linked cancer in Japan and around the Mediterranean is due to the popularity of monounsaturated oil such as olive oil and, n-3 polyunsaturated oils such as fish oils.

Dietary fats – especially the omega-6-polyunsaturated oils, are powerful promoters of breast, colon, prostate and pancreatic cancers in humans and also in animal studies. This effect is observed with 40% of calories but not with 15-20% of calories. Intake of diet typical of the American diet increased mammary tumorigenesis effectively when fed as 40% of calories.

Saturated fats – like butter, cheese, red meat, egg yolk etc. – are more dangerous than mono unsaturated fat. (One type of fat oil present in fish oils called ‘OMEGA-3-fatty acids’ is good for health in preventing heart disease.)

Fish contain 20-25% of saturated fat and are a rich source of n-3-fatty acids, Vitamin D and E. An inverse relationship exists between the colon and rectal cancers and intake of fish.

Salted food like fish and pickled vegetables

Stomach and esophageus cancers are more common in people eating salted food.

Salt damages the protective layer on the stomach mucosa and exposes the sensitive mucosa to carcinogens and chemicals.

In America, the cancer of glandular stomach and mortality due to that disease were high before 1920s with the traditional use of salt and saltpetre to preserve food. But the incidence began to decrease in later years as refrigerated storage became available.

Alcohol consumption

Alcohol increases the risk of mouth, larynx, esophageus, stomach and rectum cancers. The incidence of these cancers among alcoholics is ten times greater than in the general population. Chronic alcoholism accelerates chemically induced rectal carcinogenesis and raises the possibility that acetaldehyde, probably generated through bacterial ethanol oxidation, may be involved in this process. The secondary hyperregeneration of the mucosa, observed after alcohol drinking could, by itself, favor carcinogenesis. No more than 2 drinks per day are advised.

Pesticides and fungicides (No clear evidence in humans)

These are used to keep the vegetable crops free of pests and diseases. They are present in low amounts on the vegetables. Wash the vegetables and fruits well before eating them.

What are the health risks associated with the smoking of the occasional slim cigar or cigarette. Say 3 a month

I’m not a cigarette smoker, or cigar smoker to be honest. But on occasion when with friends, or drunk. I find it enjoyable to smoke a slim cigar or cigarette with friends, mainly for the experience of sharing the occasion with them. I would never take up smoking. But I wondered what the risks are with this sort of smoking. Is it much worse than being surrounded by the second hand smoke? In drinking terms I view it in regards to getting an occasional pint with a friend, as opposed to someone who goes down the pub everyday for a few. (ps I mainly just breath the smoke into my mouth rather than inhale…I am aware of throat cancer though). What sort of risk am I running?

Let me tell you something. All this propoganda that you hear about smoking is going to kill you is simply a bunch of nazi like bull.

There are a couple of independent sources that you need to review…..the CIA world Fact Book and the Oxford Atlas of the World.

The Oxford atlas of the World will show smoking rates per capita for all the countries of the world. The Fact Book shows LCDR (lung cancer death rates). If smoking caused lung cancer, you would expect to be able to look at the countries with the highest LCDRs and correlate that in the other book with the highest number of smokers per capita, right? Well, it doesn’t work that way. For example, Japan has ont of the highest numbers of smokers per capita, yet they are one of the LOWEST LCDRs…..but, how can that be you ask? Because there is NO link between smokig and lung cancer! That is why.

If you understand cause and effect at all, you know that in order for something to ’cause’ something, there has to be a predictible out come….for example….
I know that each time I drink too much Wild Turkey (liquor), I WILL wake up with a headache. Everytime. Without fail. Therefore, there is a definite cause and effect. I know that if I drink too much, I’ll have a hangover, and a headache….

One important caveat, though….you cannot say, from the above example that everytime I have a headache, that I had too much alcohol…..sometimes I get headaches even though I have not had any alcohol. This is the trap that ’scientists’ have gotten into these days….they have gotten their cause and effects confused. Where it is true, that some people who smoke die of lung cancer, etc., that is not the cause of the lung cancer….just like all headaches are not caused by hangovers

cigar risks

Cigars have long been associated with the rich and powerful, with relaxation and rich flavor. Cigar aficionados have created a culture around the art of smoking, assembling various theories and accessories to debate and facilitate smoking. Much like wine tasting, cigar smoking has been seen as a diversion of the upper echelons of society.

It is believed that cigars were probably first produced in Spain, and then quickly caught on in other European countries. Although many different countries manufacture cigars, Cuban cigars have long been highly regarded as one of the most flavorful and rich of all cigars. This is due to regional microclimates that are said to produce the highest quality tobacco, as well as the skill of the country’s cigar makers. Other countries that produce significant amounts of tobacco and cigars include Brazil, Mexico, Honduras, Ecuador, Cameroon, Dominican Republic, Indonesia, and the United States. Why have cigars long caught the attention of so many? Many speculate that the cigar’s main attraction is in the way it is manufactured. High quality cigars are always wrapped by hand. Unlike cigarettes, cigars undergo a lengthy process of fermentation and aging (much like wine), resulting in subtle flavors and textures. They are highly individual and the best cigars will provide no smoky aftertaste at all.

The taste of cigars is much more complex than cigarettes. The majority of all cigars are created by wrapping three different layers of tobacco leaves together. High quality cigars usually contain long leaves of nicotine as the filler, although they may also contain a combination of scraps. This results in subtle variations, different textures, and complex flavors. Cigarettes, on the other hand, are mass-produced and generally only contain one type of tobacco. Cigars also come in an incredible variety of flavors. The dedicated cigar aficionado can find chocolate, vanilla, apple, and even coffee-flavored cigars!

Although cigars have long been lauded for their smooth and complex flavors, they can also pose a great health risk. All tobacco contains nicotine. We’ve all heard about the negative health risks of nicotine, but what does it do exactly? Nicotine is a stimulant that produces a sense of euphoria. Even the casual smoker cannot escape the fact that nicotine is highly addictive and contains various toxins, carcinogens, and irritants. Although most connoisseurs of cigars will avoid inhaling the smoke, they are still at risk of developing various types of oral and larynx cancers.
