Most cities have their best restaurants, but there’s no doubt some of the larger ones offer the finest in cuisine and atmosphere. When it comes to Canada, famous restaurants you won’t want to miss are in Montreal, Quebec, Vancouver and Toronto. Both cities have restaurants that some critics believe compete with the fine dining of big American cities like San Francisco and New York.

The island of Montreal boasts upward of 4,000 restaurants, some of which have received golden reviews from famous international food critics. Perhaps the most elegant and romantic choice is Chez Queuz, located at 158 St. Paul East. A trip to the restaurant really is like taking a journey back in time. It was built in 1862 and has velvet curtains, crimson carpet, and old-fashioned chandeliers. The fireplace is always burning in the main dining room and the service is great. All of the tables are adorned with fresh orchids and the silverware is finely polished. The restaurant’s wine list is anything if not extravagant, carrying as many as 300 titles. And if that’s not enough, the famous restaurant has won the Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator since 1996. Expect to pay upward of $45 per person, but the elegance and delicious dishes from the kitchen will make your experience well worth it.

Another famous restaurant in Montreal is Rib’n Reef, located at 8105 Decarie. Though passersby who see its radiant, glowing sign outside might think it’s a simple steak house, they are surely wrong. The extra large tables make staying awhile not out of the question. And the meat is only of the highest quality USDA-approved cuts. The shrimp, some have said, is almost exotic with is tender texture and brilliant flavor. And the beverage and dessert selection will have you oohing an ahhing. Not only will you enjoy piling on the calories more than any other eatery, but you can enjoy a glass of port along with a fine cigar, all while having a conversation with bar staff who’ve been on hand for as long as three decades.

When it comes to Toronto, you really can’t go wrong with Truffles. The restaurant is pricey, but well worth it if you’d like to experience the best in Canadian fine dining. It’s even been voted Toronto’s most popular restaurant. The food is absolutely exquisite. The spaghettini with truffle foam, some say, is by itself worth a trip to Canada for. Another favorite is the famous potato-crusted halibut. But besides the food, the service really sets Truffles apart from others famous restaurants in Canada. The wait staff has been described as having an amazing sense of humor, as well as being extremely friendly.

When in Toronto, you also will not want to miss Rodney’s Oyster House in the city’s downtown district. Among a long list of shellfish choices, you simply have to try the -’Oyster Slapstick Chowder,’ which has been the delight of locals and world travelers for decades.

In tobacco-related news: Recent reports in several media outlets throw some light on the deepening problem that illegal small cigar factories, known as chinchals, pose for the Cuban government. It turns out that other United States neighbors face similar problems in managing the flow of tobacco.

A flurry of news reports suggests that Canada is having trouble controlling contraband tobacco–generally tobacco either stolen from producers or sold off-the-books in order to avoid the country’s high tobacco taxes. The scale of the problem? No one’s entirely sure, but one of the largest Canadian tobacco companies has suggested that untaxed revenue from contraband tobacco is costing the country billions of dollars. And in a recession, that’s not chump change.

The same study (funded by industry groups) found that up to thirty percent of the tobacco used in Canada is illegal. That number balloons to forty or fifty percent in places like Ontario and Quebec.

One reason this is a serious issue is such tobacco, often sold on the super-cheap in bulk to consumers for a rate that amounts to pennies per cigarette, does not have to clear any health, safety, or quality control boards.

In addition, the larger the trade gets, the bigger the revenue that the government misses out on taxing–which creates big problems for a society with such a generous tradition of social spending. It also means lower sales for convenience stores and other legitimate businesses, not to mention the tobacco companies themselves, who figure their lost revenue at nine hundred million.

Where is this tobacco coming from? The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (who seize large amounts of the stuff every year) say it’s coming from the United States. More specifically, they trace some of the tobacco to the Akwesasne Mohawk reserve near Ontario, which extends across the US-Canada border. Thus the problem with enforcement: the tobacco is coming from a place that crosses national boundaries, and has a certain amount of limited freedom from both. Several levels of a couple different governments need to be enlisted in any effort to significantly reduce the tobacco influx … as well as, most likely, a study of who is producing this tobacco, and what economic, social or legislative changes might reduce their incentive to do so.

In the meantime, say critics, the Canadian government could at least prohibit sales of tobacco products such as rolling papers to those who don’t, you know, have a license to make or sell tobacco products.

In any case, news reports don’t mention a widespread illegal-cigar tobacco problem. And cigars do indeed represent a less attractive option for counterfeiters. Cigar aficionados are looking for better-quality cigar tobacco, and part of the reason for growing illegal cigar tobacco is that you don’t have to do quality control. Also, chopped-up cheap tobacco is easier to transport and hide than the full-leaf kind that tends to make a great cigar. Illegal cigar-making tends only to happen in cases where there’s a strong incentive to do so, as in Cuba … and people don’t exactly stream across the border for these great Canadian cigars.

Still, in a troubled economy, how long before we can expect to see similar problems arise in the other areas? In the meantime, the Canadians’ problem is one more reason to buy cigars from a trustworthy, known source.

The cigar ratings supplied by publications like Cigar Magazine and Cigar Aficionado form an important part of the modern cigar industry. For cigar smokers, these ratings provide guidance in a crowded market.

As pressed-for-time moviegoers may look to Roger Ebert for guidance at the multiplex, smokers use the magazines’ ratings to cut down on their in-store browsing time. For cigar makers, meanwhile, the ratings can be the touch of life – or the kiss of death. When Cigar Aficionado gave a high rating to a Fuente Spanish Lonsdale cigar, the magazine’s imprimatur helped to cause a run on the brand, rendering it scarce and highly sought-after and increasing the profile of Fuente’s cigars in general. Every cigar maker covets a 90-or-higher rating from these influential judges.

But where do these numbers actually come from? For staffers at Cigar Aficionado, the reviewing process starts at the store. While music and book reviewers are often given free “review copies” of CDs or books (a practice that makes things convenient for the reviewer, but also diminishes his or her independence), Cigar Aficionado tries to buy cigars at close to retail prices.

This leads to big cigar bills for the magazine – but it also means the cigars they review are as much like the ones you buy at the store as is possible. (Unlike CDs or books, of course, every cigar is slightly different in composition and taste.) Sometimes, if a cigar is hard to find in stores, the magazine will request “review cigars”; ditto for cases when the magazine is trying to preview a cigar before it hits stores.

The members of the panel – all of them longstanding magazine staffers – are told nothing about the identity, price range, source, or country of origin of the cigar. A “tasting coordinator” – not a member of the panel – removes the cigar’s band so that it cannot be identified by the panel’s members.

The blank, anonymous cigar is then assigned a number so that its identity can be retrieved after it’s rated. The members of the tasting panel then retire, separately, to their offices to smoke the cigars without consulting each other. Each member of the panel assigns the cigar a certain number of points, based on its performance in any of four categories.

First of all, cigars are rated by APPEARANCE and CONSTRUCTION. Is the cigar visually pleasing? Is the wrapper smooth, or wadded-looking? Is it moist to the touch or dry? Does it stay firm? Is it veiny or soggy? After all, a great-tasting cigar that wilts the minute you take it out of the box, or looks too unappetizing to be placed in someone’s mouth, does smokers no good. Cigars can win up to 15 points in this category for being well-made and attractive.

Secondly, of course, the cigar is rated on its FLAVOR – a category that carries with it 25 of the possible 100 points. Who needs a good-looking but brackish cigar? Cigars should not taste bitter or leave a nasty aftertaste. Both taste and aftertaste should be smooth but full, complicated, and rich.

A maximum of 25 points can be won for various qualities ranged together under the general heading of SMOKING CHARACTERISTICS. How does it burn? Is it hard to light? Does it burn one-sidedly? Will the smoke burn your mouth, or feel cool and comfortable as it should? How hard do you have to pull to get a mouthful? All these questions and more are considered.

Finally, the tasters each give a score (up to 35 points) for OVERALL IMPRESSION. (Flavor counts most here.) Is the cigar good, bad – or great? And the question utmost in any dedicated smoker’s mind – is it worth the money? The panel’s various scores in each category are averaged and a final score is the result.

Ratings, of course, are always subjective, depending on individuals’ taste – even if those individuals have well-developed, highly educated tastes. Your mileage may vary. For any smoker, the ultimate authority should always be your own tastebuds!

For many of us, casino gambling and cigar smoking go together like Frank and Bing. Generations of first-time Vegas visitors have enhanced their experience via frequent applications of cigar smoke, just like those iconic Rat Packers of yesteryear with their impeccable suits, suave manner, and constantly-replenished supplies of alcohol and tobacco.

Which made it all the more surprising, for many cigar lovers, when the Nevada legislature imposed a public-smoking ban in 2006. That ban doesn’t yet apply to Las Vegas gaming floors – there is such a thing as tradition, after all. But Atlantic City recently took Nevada’s ball and ran with it: the New Jersey state legislature has instituted a smoking ban, effective October 2008, which includes the area’s famed casinos.

All of which raises the question: where can a gambling smoker still enjoy a cigar?

Well, part of the answer depends on timing. Ontario, Canada, long a major vacation destination for gamblers, also banned smoking in casinos in 2006. This decision was particularly lamented by American visitors to the area, who took advantage of the Canadian casinos’ proximity to cigar stores that sell banned-in-America Cuban cigars (though it’s technically illegal for Americans abroad to buy Cuban cigars). Ontario’s casinos acknowledged these smokers’ concerns, successfully petitioning the province’s legislature for permission to build special “smoking shelters.” So you can smoke cigars during your visit to an Ontario casino – just wait till you’re off the gaming floor and in the outdoor shelter.

Elsewhere in Canada, consider Edmonton, Alberta – or, actually, just west of it. Though public smoking is banned in Alberta, due to a 2006 ban, the Enoch Cree First Nation has voted to exempt its own casino from this ban. So visitors to the River Cree casino can light up.

Pennsylvania remains another possibility. Casinos fought successfully to be exempted from the statewide smoking ban passed by Governor Ed Rendell in June 2008. As of summer 2008, you can no longer smoke cigars in most Pennsylvania bars and restaurants, but you can smoke in casinos located outside Philadelphia. That leaves such places as Pittsburgh (with the Majestic Star casino slated to open in late 2008), Bethlehem (the Sands Bethworks Casino, also under construction), and a handful of other locations.

The Michigan legislature recently adjourned for the summer without deciding whether not to pass a statewide smoking ban. In the meantime, Wayne County recently passed a ban that exempts casinos. This means that the non-Native owned casinos of Detroit will continue to be able to compete with the state’s several large Native American-owned casinos, which will not be subject to any statewide ban.

Biloxi, Mississippi, remains a favorite for Southern gamblers who like to smoke, owing to its lack of a statewide smoking ban. Though some larger Mississippi cities have banned public smoking, Biloxi remains a smoke-positive place, rendering its nine casinos attractive destinations for a smoker-gambler.

South Dakota casino owners, meanwhile, are relishing the prospects created by a statewide smoking ban recently passed in neighboring Iowa. According to reports in local newspapers, casino owners in North Sioux City are hoping Iowa’s ban will drive smoking gamblers to the state’s many casinos – while they worry that South Dakota might pass a similar law in the near future. After all, half the population of the United States currently lives in an area (state, city or town) where public smoking is proscribed to at least some extent – and the popularity of such bans seems on the increase. Even Mississippi’s state legislature is considering one. So light ‘em while you’ve got ‘em – and no matter where you are, whenever you gamble, check before you light up. It’s not fun to be ejected from a casino!

I recommend hiring a Tampa airport limo service when you are in Tampa for the first time not only because this is the most comfortable way to enter the city but also because the city witnesses a huge inflow of air travelers each year. As per report, in 2008, Tampa International Airport, the city’s main airport, alone has helped 18.3 million people commute in and out of the city, which makes it the 27th busiest airport in the North America in terms of the passenger movement.

If you are entering in the city and you do not want to get caught in the rush then hiring Tampa airport transportation is the best thing to do. Think about the condition of traffic in the city that welcomes travelers through its sea ports, one railway station, and four air ports. Indeed, this city of Florida is served by four airports: Tampa International Airport, Peter O. Knight Airport, Tampa Executive Airport, and St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport.

Hiring a Tampa limo service for vacation

Tampa airport limo service is also the best way to travel through the attractive tourist destinations of the city. If you are in the city, you must pay a visit to the following:

  • Busch Gardens amusement park
  • Tampa Museum of Art
  • Ybor City, the “Cigar Capital of the World”
  • Seminole Hard Rock Casino

These are the most notable destinations to see in the city. If you do have an elaborate plan to stay in the city then do include the following in your list of must-visit places when in this beautiful city. These places are worth seeing.

  • Raymond James Stadium
  • Legends Field
  • Lowry Park Zoo
  • Florida Aquarium
  • The Big Cat Rescue
  • Museum of Science & Industry
  • The Jobsite Theater

You can also use this service to take you and your family to the resort or hotel you have booked for your vacation. If you do this, you will get to preview the city in style. Your family is going to love you for that.

Hiring a airport transportation in Tampa for business

You can also avail Tampa airport transportation services to take you to your business meeting in the downtown, as these services provide the best possible comfort. You remain fresh, and relaxed for the meeting you are attending in the downtown. Not only that, a Tampa limo will also come handy by helping you do the last minute run down of the things you have to present in the meeting while on the move.

If you are taking your team for the meeting then you can organize in-limo pre-meeting and post-meeting meetings with your team to discuss the agenda or outcome of the meeting. This will save some valuable time. You can use a Tampa limo service to conduct meeting with your client on it as well. A business meeting in a limo is not an uncommon sight in the neighborhood.

Andrew Welkinson reviews and writes about Tampa Florida Limo companies, travel and tourism. When renting airport limo services in tampa, do your homework before you buy.

Can I clean the city myself?

Hello. I am an international student from South America living in Montreal, Canada. As you might now, after all the snow is gone in spring, a lot of garbage will mysteriously appear on the streets, and a lot of it will remain there even after spring cleaning. Is it legal if I contribute myself to picking up garbage from some public spaces? Why doesn’t anybody do that in Montreal?

I would like to meet people who want to do the same and join them to help clean the city. At least one street to start, or at least those ugly cigarette butts from a small area. Maybe we give a good example.

Anyone would join me?

Please don’t talk about taxes. I know everything I need to know and I don’t want to talk about money, this is a personal concern.

Even if you can’t find anyone to join you, do your part and pick up the garbage. Others will see you and follow your example. I like the idea.

There are many ways to store blue prints. Blue prints can be stored in flat file drawers, rolled file storage, digitization, plastic covers, lamination, and vertical file storage systems. This article will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each storage method.

Flat file storage systems are the traditional method of blue print storage and work well for documents that are archival in nature, which do not need to be moved with frequency. Large format documents can be very heavy, particularly when they are on the bottom of a flat file drawer. This makes the blue prints prone to tearing and ripping when moved; the sheer weight of large file drawers can require two people to remove the files out of a flat file system. Flat file cabinets can make attractive office furniture since they can be made of exotic woods; the large surfaces can function as extra desktops or shelving. They also can provide a good storage medium for clean sheets. Flat file systems are notoriously heavy and immobile; flat file systems are very secure with locking features.

Rolled blue prints, which remain a common practice, are typically stood on end in a vertical position. While easy to access and carry, rolled files tend to deteriorate quickly. Users tend to arrange the rolled blue prints in a haphazard manner, which creates organization problems and can damage the documents. The blue prints are easily damaged from contact with other documents; they also can get dusty and dirty which encourages deterioration. Rolled blue prints can be stored in wire upright trays which provide quick access; some blue print trays come on rollers for increased mobility. Rolling blue prints creates another problem called blue print “Memory”. The rolling, then storing blue prints this way, even for a short period, causes them to not lay flat but rather curl back to the rolled state, when you unroll them. This makes them harder to use and it gets worse, not better the longer the are rolled.

Digitally scanning documents is increasing popular for archiving seldom used blue prints, but with scanning charges at over $100 per document, digitization can be cost prohibitive. This is particularly true for legacy documents which may be seldom used, but remain very important for future reference. Surprisingly, digital documents are not foolproof. Blue prints created by older types of software can be very difficult to read when using newer versions software. This can be particularly true for intricate drawings where precision is of utmost importance. In those cases, archiving paper blue prints is the only salvation.

Storing files in plastic covers is a good method to protect files from coffee spills, weather, or dirt. They can also protect the documents from cigarette ashes. If you have ever been to a construction site, you know that they are a chaotic and dirty place; this makes protecting blue prints at a construction site a full-time job. Plastic covers can provide good protection for blue prints that need to be carried from site to site.

For the same reason, laminated files are becoming more popular for engineers, construction workers, and architects in the field. Large document lamination is affordable and provides for the ultimate safety of a document, although the weight of the document is more than doubled. The problem here is that once laminated you can’t make changes or notes on the blue print. Long term storage of laminated documents can prove problematic since they are inflexible and can get permanently creased.

Vertical file storage systems may be the most efficient method for storing blue prints. By storing blue prints in a vertical (and flat) position, floor space savings of up to 75% are achieved. Stored in vertical plastic sheaths, blue prints are protected from damage by dirt or contact with other documents. Access and organization is improved since all blue prints are labeled like the files in a conventional file cabinet. This easy access minimizes the stress on the office worker when searching for documents since all documents are easily found. Cost savings can be substantial since one vertical file storage system retailing for $1500 can store the equivalent of a three five-drawer flat file storage systems with dimensions of 24×36 inches, which can retail for $3800 or more. Vertical file storage systems have wheels and are mobile; they also can be locked to provide a secure storage system.

There are many ways to store blue prints; your blue print storage needs will dictate the preferred methods of storage. For many users, multiple storage systems prove the best solution.
