Why tie children’s health funding to smoking?

I am doing this for a school essay so any opinion counts.

The questions I want answered are:

What do you think about this?

Do you think the government is stepping in too far?

Why would cigarette taxes go to children’s health
funding when children’s health could be caused by secondhand
smoke?

or just add any opinion you would like please… especially if you have one different from the articles below

http://www.tobaccofreekids.org/reports/prices/

or

http://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf/2009/03/post_11.html

It’s just a place to suck more taxes and a scam to get away with it. Politicians are frauds, embezzlers, and extortionists. This one is fraud and extortion. Watch to see how much of the tobacco tax is embezzled away from children’s health and used for the pork barrel.

Is this how democrats want to pay for healthcare reform?

A large portion is expected to come from reductions in Medicare and Medicaid. But that won’t pay for the full overhaul.

As for raising money, ideas have included a
- national sales tax,
- taxing soda
- “surtax” on people making more than $250,000.

Don’t the poor of society pay a lot of taxes for soda and cigarettes? Will this bill have a payment clause where anyone making under $250K will get a check like the one in the cap and tax bill?

Animal – Would love to have a coke with you. But sorry I don’t smoke.
The medical industry isn’t offering, it is being told that they will do this.

O-hood, ought not your tag line read : Spread THEIR Wealth?

As to poor paying taxes — D’ah, what else is new. The poor pay taxes in sales and excise taxes at the same rate as anyone else they also suffer more by the hidden tax of inflation. Do recall that the Great Thief and Liar FDR, set up the FICA tax when workers were expected to live to be 59.6 yo but would be able to retire at 65 yo. He(FDR) also set up subsidies to encourage tobacco growth and usage so that states and the Fed could obtain more excise taxes — repeal of the 18th amendment was to get liquor taxes flowing into his overspending hands again. He also taxed Marijuana out of existence to prevent Northern migration of certain ethnic groups and to encourage tobacco (taxed) usage and to punish the use of ditch weed (non-taxed).

The island of Zakynthos, more commonly known as Zante in English, is the third largest of the islands in the Ionian Sea.  Although they enjoy long, hot summers, the high rainfall in winter means that these islands are much greener than many of the other Greek islands.  Olives, grapes and citrus fruit are all grown commercially here.  There are pine forests in the southeast of the island and in places the rich aroma of herbs overpowers the salty smell of the sea.

If you like arid landscapes then the Cyclades Islands may be for you.  If you like lush vegetation, I recommend Zakynthos.  Hotels, villas and apartments here come in all shapes and sizes.  Prices per person, per night, range from €20 for a private room in a backpackers hostel to €150 for 5 Star accommodations.  If you don’t want to stay in one of island’s hotels, there are scores of villas, Zakynthos apartments or campsites to choose from.

Zakynthos is a beautiful island.  Its most spectacular site is perhaps Smugglers Cove, also known as Shipwreck Bay or Navagio.  Almost every brochure you pick up about the Ionian Islands will have a picture of this place.  Staff in your hotel or your Zakynthos apartments will be able to give you directions and advice on how to get here.  In 1980 the Panagiotis, which was carrying contraband cigarettes, ran aground here during a storm while trying to escape the Greek navy.  The remains of the ship are still visible to this day.  The wreck, however, is not what makes the site so famous.  It is famous because the sand is brilliant white, the surrounding crystal clear sea is a glorious blue, and the beach itself is nestled at the base of towering cliffs.  This must be one of the most beautiful places in the world.

The beach is only accessible by sea.  Various companies run boat trips there.  It can get very busy around lunchtime so the best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon.  Take a picnic and enjoy a relaxing time in a truly amazing location.  To complete your Shipwreck Bay experience you should take the opportunity to see it from the top of the cliffs.  On the road from Anafronita to Volimes you pass a signpost directing you to a lookout platform perched high above Shipwreck Bay.  If you can handle heights this is definitely worth a visit.  The view from the platform is spectacular, particularly at sunset.

When the self storage industry was in its infancy, marketing was not a big concern. Since there were very few facilities in existence, an owner merely needed to provide a fairly safe and clean environment for the small number of people looking to store their belongings. Over the years the number of available units has grown, as well as the number of people needing storage. Today, there are nearly 50,000 self storage facilities in the U.S. alone. Therefore, the savvy customers have developed much higher expectations, making marketing in the self storage industry a vital tool.

Self storage marketing is the promotion of your self storage business. Self storage marketing is usually always centered on the customer. A recent industry study showed that the reasons people need self storage are that, 44% are moving, 34% don’t have enough space and 15% are people with business needs. Self storage businesses determine what the customers needs are, and implements them into their self storage properties.

A well-known analyst and marketer has divided marketing into four general sets of activities that are common in any business. These activities have become universally recognized as the “Four P’s”, and are often referred to as the Marketing Mix.

.Product: The product aspects of self storage marketing deal with the specifications of the actual features, benefits or services that the self storage properties offer, and how it relates to the self storage renter needs and wants.

.Pricing: This refers to the process of setting a price for the unit, including discounts.

.Promotion: This includes advertising, sales promotion, publicity, and personal selling, and refers to the various methods of promoting the product, brand, or self storage company.

.Placement or Place: refers to how the property gets recognized by the customer.

As well as the standard Four P’s (Product, Pricing, Promotion, and Placement), marketing for a service industry such as self storage calls upon an extra three activities, totaling seven and known collectively as the Extended Marketing Mix. These are:

.People: Any person coming into contact with customers can have an impact on customer service. They must be appropriately trained in the ways of self storage, well motivated and the right type of person.

.Process: This is the process involved in providing a service and the behavior of people, which can be crucial to customer satisfaction and service.

.Physical evidence: Unlike a product, a service cannot be experienced before it is delivered, which makes it intangible. This means that potential self storage customers could perceive greater risk when deciding whether to rent. To reduce the feeling of buyers’ remorse, and improving the chance for a rental or reservation, it is often vital to offer potential customers the chance to see what a service would be like. (Site visit)

For a self storage marketing plan to be successful, the mix of the four “P’s” must reflect the wants and desires of the self storage consumers in the target market. Trying to convince a market segment to rent something they don’t want is extremely expensive and seldom successful. Marketers depend on marketing research, both formal and informal, to determine what consumers want and what they are willing to pay for it. Marketers hope that this process will give them a sustainable competitive advantage. Marketing management is the practical application of this process. The offer is also an important addition to the 4P’s theory. As in any business, the idea of marketing is to promote the business – both as a whole and on an individual level.

In the past, self storage as a whole has sometimes had a bad reputation. Oftentimes when people think of the industry they think of the horror stories that are shown on the evening news – the meth lab found in a unit, a soldier’s items being auctioned by mistake, the hurricane damaged storage property, the car used in a homicide being stored in a space. Unfortunately for the storage industry the every day good things that occur are just too mundane to draw attention. This is one reason why positive marketing on a national level is extremely important. Self storage organizations, private, statewide and nationwide have all become very important in the positive marketing for all self storage owners and managers. Many of the larger private self storage organizations put on large conventions to increase the awareness of the self storage industry. This allows owners and managers to meet, exchange ideas and learn some new techniques. Positive feedback nationally will always help locations on the local level.

Most self storage companies today have a customer focus. This implies that the company focuses its activities and products on consumer demands. Generally there are three ways of doing this:

.The customer-driven approach consumer wants are the drivers of all strategic marketing decisions. Every aspect of a market offering, including the nature of the product itself, is driven by the needs of potential consumers. The starting point is always the consumer

.The sense of identifying market changes

When choosing your trailer you should make sure it will last as it’s quite an investment. But for the avid camper it is a second home in the wild, so should reflect the owner’s personality. There are many camper trailer manufacturers in Australia, so finding the right one shouldn’t be a problem.

Some things to consider

Cost

Cost is the most important factor in narrowing down your choices. There are many lovely camper trailers in the second hand market and you just might find what you need.

Battery

Ask whether the camper has an onboard battery set up. How long will the battery last and how should you charge it? Also, what is the length of the cable you will need?

Beds

What is the size of the bed? Is it single or double? Where do the kids sleep? Can you leave the bed made up or do you have to fold it away every time you move away from the trailer?

Ball weight

Make sure the camper trailer you are buying has a suitable ball weight for your vehicle. Also, enquire if you can lift the front of the camper, as you might have to unhook and turn it round in case of an off-road condition. A general rule is to have 10 to 15 percent of the camper’s weight on the hitch.

Canvas

What kind of canvas is used for the trailer? Do I have to wet it down for the first time? If yes, then enquire why. It is good to get it sorted out with the manufacturers.

Vehicle and Trailer

Check whether the camper is compatible with your vehicle. It should not be too heavy for your vehicle and should be easily movable.

Customer Service

When considering the trailer, enquire about the after sales service provided by the company. Your trailer will go through many different conditions, so it is better to ask about the guarantee and warranty terms beforehand. Tambo Campers is a company that offers great camper trailers. Check them out at www.tambocampers.com.au

Other trappings

Some camper trailer companies offer various extras, at a cost of course, but it can be worth your while. Some off-road camper trailers come with boat racks, meshed gazebos, water tanks and awnings and also sometimes have extra rooms, which can be quite handy for groups.

Colour and Finish

You can get the campers to be customised to your requirements. Many campers want the trailers to match the vehicle, but very few companies do that. So, if that is what you want, then you should go for a company that provides such services.

Flooring

What kind of flooring is available? Is the floor off or on the ground? Also, in case it rains, will the water seep in? Do they have carpets for the indoors and outdoors?

Fridge

Ask if the trailer comes equipped with a fridge. If not, then enquire if there is space in case you want to install one.

Solar heaters

Some off-road camper trailers come with solar heaters that give you hot water and can help you charge your solar batteries too.

Insurance

Ask how much the insurance costs will be and will you be covered off road too.

Lighting

What are the lighting facilities and do they come with the vehicle? Does it have plugs and cigarette lighters so you can use your appliances? If yes, then what is the voltage?

Rear View

Will the camper prohibit your rear vision? If yes, then enquire if you need to use side mirrors?

Windows and Wheels

Ask about the number of windows available and if they are less, enquire if they can be increased to your liking. Also important are the wheels. Ask if you can get the trailer wheels to your specification or if you have to use the company provided wheels.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless and odorless gas produced by the incomplete burning of material containing carbon. You can’t see it, smell it or taste it but carbon monoxide can cause serious illness or death. It has been referred to many times as the “silent killer” and is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that CO poisoning claims nearly 500 lives, and causes more than 15,000 visits to hospital emergency departments every year in the U.S.

To be sure, this odorless, tasteless and colorless gas is ruthless. Your exposure to CO would quickly result in one or more symptoms including headache, nausea and fatigue. The deadly gas goes undetected in a home without a proper CO detector, and if the people exposed to it do not know of its existence in their environment a proper diagnosis is problematic. Further, CO poisoning can be notoriously difficult to diagnose because the symptoms mimic those of other conditions, notably the flu. Children, pregnant women, babies and individuals with heart conditions are at most risk but CO poisoning can affect anyone. Prolonged exposure can lead to brain damage and ultimately death.

Sources of CO

Some sources of carbon monoxide include gas water heaters, kerosene space heaters, charcoal grills, propane heaters and stoves, gasoline- and diesel-powered generators, cigarette smoke, propane-fueled forklifts, gas-powered concrete saws, indoor races or tractor pulls, boat engines, spray paint, solvents, degreasers and paint removers. Although CO results from when any material burns, more is produced when there is insufficient oxygen for fully efficient combustion. And, yes, cigarette smoke, including the second-hand variety, contains CO, although in an insufficient concentration to do immediate damage. Given enough time, of course, even small amounts of CO can build to dangerous levels in the bloodstream.

The danger comes from improperly vented appliances and machinery such as those listed above, especially ones that run for extended periods of time near human habitation. Such continuous exposure can lead to flu-like symptoms, as noted previously, but would keep escalating into more severe headaches, fatigue, dizziness and nausea. As toxic levels are approached, a victim may experience mental confusion, severe irritability, impaired judgment, memory loss and lack of coordination.

Treatment and prevention

The fastest and most effective way to begin treating the effects of CO poisoning is to relocate affected people (and pets) to open, fresh air away from the source of the gas immediately. At an emergency room, someone suffering from acute CO poisoning will be given pure oxygen to breathe, which speeds up the excretion of the gas from the blood. More serious cases may require a special treatment known as Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). This therapy can significantly improve the chances of survival and reduce the risk of further damage to the body. HBOT elevates the amount of oxygen in the body to about ten times normal levels by placing the victim inside a hyperbaric (higher than atmospheric pressure) chamber. Most of the developed world’s hospitals are now equipped with this lifesaving technology.

The best way for you and your loved ones to avoid the “silent killer” is to be educated on how and why CO poisoning occurs. Also, if you live in an environment that includes any of the CO sources mentioned above, you should take the appropriate action to repair any leaks or malfunctions in them. Of course, installing CO detectors in your home and place of business, and maintaining them with fresh batteries, is a powerful preventative step, as well. If you do not think ahead and follow a thorough anti-CO strategy, you are most definitely putting yourself, your family, your friends and neighbors, and your employees at great risk.
