Dance has been an important part of rituals, celebrations and entertainment since before the birth of human civilization. In the beginning, before we had written language to record things, the purpose of dance was often to tell stories and to pass them down to future generations.

The story of dancing in Cuba

In Cuba, as in ancient times, dance tells its own story. The passion and energy of Cuban dance reveals the strength and conviction of the Cuban people, determined to enjoy life despite ‘la lucha’ (the struggle) of living in a strictly regulated country where the average monthly wage comes in at around 400 pesos – less than £10.

The richness of Cuban music and dancing also tells the story of Cuba’s melting pot of cultures. From the high-stepping flamenco brought by the Spanish settlers in the 15th century to the frenzied tribal dances of the West African slaves, dancing is in the blood of the Cuban people.

From the teenage girl in denim shorts to the cigar-seller on the street corner, Cubans are given to break into spontaneous dance steps. Furthermore, the people dancing on the streets of Havana are likely to be just as good as the professionals, because in Cuba dancing is simply a way of life.

The variety of Cuban dances

Cuba boasts a huge range of dances including classical ballet, contemporary, flamenco and folk dancing. But it is the partnered routines that appeared in Havana dancehalls between the 1920s and the 1950s – Salsa, rumba, mambo and cha-cha-cha – that can be seen in every Cuban bar, club and street. Of these, Salsa is the most popular dance internationally.

Since the name ‘Salsa’ (it’s Spanish for ’sauce’) was coined, Salsa dancing has exploded in popularity in Latin America and across the world. Salsa dancing classes are now hugely popular but to really get into the swing of it a Salsa holiday in Cuba itself is a must.

Tips for Cuban Salsa dancing

If you do take yourself on a Cuban holiday, you’ll have the unique experience of watching Cubans Salsa dancing. It sometimes appears that by some genetic aberration they have been born with super flexible joints, defying physics to carry out all the complex manoeuvres they have integrated into the dancing. Their remarkable twisting body movements and natural sense of rhythm will dazzle you.

If you have the right technique, Cuban Salsa is easier to learn than many other forms of dance. The basic footwork is a fairly simple walking motion, pausing every fourth beat, and there are some six basic steps you can follow to make sure you’re on the right tracks.

1 Relax

To dance Cuban Salsa well it is important not to rush, but to relax into the steps. Movements should be precise and deliberate in addition to being flowing and smooth.

2 Walk with purpose

Salsa dancing involves a continual circular motion. Couples walk around each other with an imaginary axis between them. This makes turns look smooth and effortless. Walking gives time to untangle your arms after each turn.

3 Have confidence in your lead

The leader (usually the man) should have constant tension in his arms, while his hands guide his Salsa dancing partner around the floor. There is no need to clamp onto each other’s hands, only to use the right amount of tension to provide a leading signal.

4 Be flexible when following

In order to follow well, ladies should try to match the tension of their partner. The exception to this is when arms need to be relaxed and flexible to complete arm-twisting Salsa moves without injury!

5 Keep balanced when you spin

The key to all the spectacular spins in Salsa is not to lose your balance. One way to do it is by spotting while you spin – focusing on one spot at each turn – an age-old dance technique.

6 Use your body

In Salsa dancing, ladies should make use of their body and be sensual, playful and creative. This can involve some creative arm movements, going with what feels right and basically showing off a bit. Enjoy!

Smoking a cigar is an enduring pleasure that the cigarettes do not provide. In fact, branded and quality cigars are believed to be the status symbol that showcases your wealth and class. They come in a variety of flavors and brands to cater the tastes of different people. Put simply, smoking a cigar has long been a popular way to portray an air of high-status, especially in business deals to confirm your dominant status.

The history of a cigar

Researchers teach us that the cigar has been in use for more than five hundred years. According to history, records show that citizens of Europe were much more unaware of tobacco before Columbus’s grand trip of 1492. However, the original native population of the islands in the Caribbean and the rest of North America started the use of cigars. Since then, cigar smoking has generated a lot of interest and passion in the United States as well as European countries.

Types of cigars: choose according to your taste

Different people have different favorite types of cigars. Many cigars have their own unique specialty they have gained favor by aficionados globally. Cigars offer a number of options to choose from but only a handful boast global recognition. Some of these include Gurkha Cigars, Macanudo Cigars, Cohiba Cigars, Padron Cigars, Acid Cigars, Ashton Cigars, Arturo Fuente Cigars, Montecristo Cigars and the list goes on. Basically, every cigar has three parts – the filler, the binder and the wrapper.

Storage of cigars

As mentioned above, cigar smoking is an enduring pleasure that comes with a fresh and fine cigar. But it is a fact that cigars are very fragile and need special storage as well as an environment of sufficient humidity to keep the cigar tobacco fresh and tasty. This is why a good quality humidor is essential to keep cigars fresh and classy by keeping them away from a number of problems like harsh taste, a broken wrapper, fast burn, tobacco beetle infestation and difficulty in lighting. Put simply, a good quality cigar humidor keeps cigars in an environment of ideal humidity because an ideal humidity of around 55 to 70 percent is required to remain the tobacco fresh.

Buy your favorite cigars online

The availability of premium branded cigars at online stores at reasonable prices has also increased the popularity of cigars. One of the interesting factors about purchasing cigars online is that you don’t have to worry about the delicate nature of cigars. Moreover, these online stores accept all types of payment options like Paypal and credit cards and also deliver them to your doorstep as quickly as overnight if you desire.

It is not easy to select the Christmas gift that will please to eveyone: we never know if the gift will be appreciated by its recipient.

How many times have you received a gift that is never emerged out of the cupboard in which you putted it?

I myself received hundreds of gifts that I do not use, especially at Christmas Time. And I do not mention the decorative objects, that I do not know what to do with because they do not match the decoration of my house or simply because I have no place to put them on.

This year, try to give useful and/or consumable Christmas gifts. By giving something useful and consumable such as skin care products or food products, you are sure that your gift will be appreciated.

Christmas gift baskets are the solution.

Unfortunately, ready-made gift baskets can be expensive and we sometimes have to spend a lot of money to buy them without being sure that all the contained products will please.

So, what about a homemade Christmas gift basket? It is an excellent way to save money on the cost of the basket and products included. You even do not have to buy the basket.

Gift baskets can be easily made out of wooden boxes, briefcases made of leather or vinyl, or shoeboxes nicely decorated…

If the products you plan to include in the basket are too expensive, you will be able to reduce their number and save more money.

Here are some Christmas gift basket ideas.

“Rustic Gourmet”:

Varnish a wooden wine case, use a “rustic oak” tinted varnish Fill the case with decorative straw or unbleached silk or crepe paper Add the following products:

- Three bottles of wine (red, rose and white),
- A pot of fat liver,
- 2 legs duck confit,
- A pot of deer pate,
- A pot of wild boar,
- Three jars of wine jelly (red, rose and white),
- A pot of onion confit,
- A pot of truffles.

Economic Option:
- A bottle of sweetened white wine,
- A pot of deer paté,
- A pot of wild boar,
- A jar of wine jelly

“I Love Chocolate”:

Use a metallic box, Fill it with pink silk or crepe paper and add the following products:

- A bottle of chocolate liquor,
- 250 g Leonidas chocolates,
- Chocolate bars
- Côte d’Or Special Edition,
- A natural cocoa box,
- Boxes of fruit, flower or citrus flavoured sugar

“Espana Por Favor”:

In a metallic basket, place red and yellow silk or crepe paper and add the following products:

- A bottle of Ponche,
- A bottle of “Sangre de Toro” wine
- A pata negra ham or serrano ham,
- A chorizo,
- A “Manchego” cheese,
- A bottle of Spanish olive oil,
- Almond Turron,
- An assortment of Christmas cookies (Surtido de Navidad)

“Provence” (skin care):

Cover a shoebox with Special Christmas gift wrap. Line the inside with colorful silk paper. Decorate the box with a wide colored ribbon. Put a towel of the same color. Add the following products:

- A Marseilles scented soap,
- A shower gel,
- A box of bath salts,
- A bottle of body scented oil,
- A bottle of floral water,
- A horsehair glove

“Belgian Beer Discovery” Gift Basket:

Use a wooden shelf and put the bottles on it. Belgium produces more than 680 different sorts of high quality beers that satisfy all tastes, the choice is yours…

You can create an infinite themed gift baskets set; do not hesitate to create a gift basket for whiskey, cigar, great music, book amateurs… you’re only limited by your imagination.

Cigar Question?

I am working on getting funding to open my own cigar store. where i live there have been a lot of cigar stores that have popped up then been closed. What I would like to ask to those cigar smokers out there is if you could provide me some of your thoughts of what you would like to see out of a cigar store…..and if any of you are interested in writting a review about a certian cigar please say so in your reply and i will give you a link to do so. I am gathering info on cigars people would like to see at my store. This store will also offer a nice selection of wine and quality hard alcohol as well so any comments on that would be fine to….thanks….and if you need to know this store will be in Surprise, Arizona
link to write a review on a cigar that i may choose to stock at my store…also wine and spirit reviews welcome

http://www.freewebs.com/theiceman666/discussions.htm

Here’s what I like to see in a smoke shop:

1. Friendly staff who aren’t snobbish or intimidating. If a customer wants Swisher Sweets, give’em Swisher Sweets and don’t smirk at them.
2. Accessible humidors. If a walk in, don’t lock the door. If display case type, be adequately lit and have open doors (again, no locks. It’s annoying to have to ask for help when the cigar you want is right in front of you.)
3. Organization. By country is probably most logical. Also by maker, size, wrapper, etc.
4. Varied selection. That way, even if the particular smoke a customer wants is not available, something with similar qualities is.
5. Good pricing. Of course, right?

My personal favorites are A. Fuente 8-5-8 Maduro, CAO Gold Connecticut, La Gloria Cubana Serie R Maduro, and Padron Churchill Maduro.

What’s a good cigar brand to buy for a “beginner”?

I wanted to get my boyfriend some cigars for christmas. He likes to smoke once in a while, just for fun. How should I pick out a brand? And how many is a good number to get him?

Montana is right.

And WOW, we have all the officers from the SMOKING POLICE stopping by tonight, I see.

“Feeding him poison”? Good grief, are you people nuts?

I’d rather have a cool woman hand me a cigar to puff on that will take a few minutes off the end of my life, then a badgering, nagging, self-important woman who would pester and needle me at the thought of “gasp” smoking a nice smooth cigar until I wish I was dead 10 years earlier.

This lucky fellow will likely last far longer with his woman and a cigar than the poor saps who married these distressed women criticizing him.

Will the Cuba situation lead to Cuban Cigars in the US?

I noticed that there is alot of hype around the new head of Cuba! I have seen blogs saying this may lead to a lift of the Cuban goods ban by the United States. Do you think this may result in Cuban Cigars becoming readily available in the United States anytime soon?

Only if Cuba adopts a more democratic/capitalistic approach to it’s government/economy.
