The game of table tennis begins during the 1880s in England with the Victorians of the upper class. This game was developed as an indoor alternative to tennis. Back in the 1880s just everyday items were used for playing equipment in the game. The players would set books in a line for a net, either string knotted or a champagne cork with a rounded top was used for a ball, and then for a racket a cigar box lid would be used.

Then the game began to evolve throughout Europe, Japan and the USA. Manufacturers during this time perfected equipment for use in playing table tennis. The first rackets were reported to be frames with parchment on them, or sometimes animal hides may also have been stretched on these frames. The sound the rackets made hitting the ball is what gave the game its name of wiff-waff or ping-pong. There have however been other names used for the game along the way.

In 1901 the name ping-pong was then trademarked by J. Jaques & Son Ltd., which was an English manufacturer. So then the game of ping-pong was played using the rather pricy equipment that J. Jaques & Son made. The other equipment manufacturers called it table tennis. Then Jaques made a deal with Parker Brothers in the USA for the rights to the name ping-pong.

Then another innovator stepped in, James Gibb, who was an Englishman who loved table tennis, he discovered that celluloid balls during a visit to the USA in the year 1901. He found this type of balls to be good for playing the game. Also in the same year E.C. Goode invented the version of the modern racket we know today, by applying a piece of textured rubber onto a wooden paddle. In the 20th century this game was once banned in Russia because the rulers thought the game would hurt the players’ vision.

Table Tennis Association then was formed in 1921 in England, with International Table Tennis Federation being formed in 1926. The first official world championship was hosted by London in 1927.

During the 1950s improvements were made to the rackets by adding a layer of sponge to the rubber, this allowed for more speed and spin on the ball. These were first made by the S.W. Hancock Ltd. Company, which manufactured sporting goods in England. Then speed glue was introduced which made the speed and spin even faster which lead to changes having to be made in the equipment to make the game slower.

Near the close of the year 2000 the International Table Tennis Federation made several changes to the rules, focused on making the game easier to watch on TV.

There are those people that are trying to revive the earlier form of table tennis, to back before the sponge was added to the paddles. This classic form of table tennis is based more on strategy than speed and spin of the ball.

In 1988 table tennis was made an Olympic sport. In 2004 during the Athens game it was the 5th highest watched Olympic sport on TV. In 2008 China won all Gold medals in the Beijing games. In 2010 table tennis will be part of the first of the Youth Olympic Games.

george orwell cigarettes
In 1984 by George Orwell, what was wrong with the Cigarettes?

The cigarettes fell apart and the tobacco kept falling out.

http://www.george-orwell.org/1984/4.html

“nothing cheap and plentiful except synthetic gin. And though, of course, it grew worse as one’s body aged, was it not a sign that this was not the natural order of things, if one’s heart sickened at the discomfort and dirt and scarcity, the interminable winters, the stickiness of one’s socks, the lifts that never worked, the cold water, the gritty soap, the cigarettes that came to pieces, the food with its strange evil tastes? Why should one feel it to be intolerable unless one had some kind of ancestral memory that things had once been different?”

A large portion of the world’s population seems to idealize the Americans and the western culture as a whole. For the most part, there is nothing wrong with that, expect for the fact that we westerners are oddly obsessed with appearance. To us, appearance defines you as an individual, and plays a large role in your overall success in society. One of the first things about a person that others notice happens to be the teeth.

For most people, when they are first introduced to another individual, they tend to smile. Now that smile is how the other individual perceives you. Just imagine if you just had coffee or smoked a cigarette about an hour before meeting this individual, your teeth would be stained. Instinctively, that individual would now perceive you as being unkempt and lazy.

Now imagine if that person happened to be your boss? The point is that first impressions mean everything, so one should always try to have white teeth. The question then becomes “how much is this going to cost me?” Lets face it, no one would want to pay hundreds of dollars to get their teeth cleaned by a professional. However, luckily for us, there cheap teeth whitening kits available that would do just as good of a job at whitening your teeth as the machines used by professionals.

Cheap teeth whitening is the new craze because it quickly and effectively whitens your teeth by several shades while allowing you to keep your hard earned money in the bank, where it belongs.

The first tobacco plants are thought to have grown sometime around 6000BC. It was five thousands years later that men first started smoking and chewing the tobacco plant. This happened in the Central America, and the first people to smoke are thought to be the Mayans. More than 2500 years later, in 1595, appears the first book about tobacco, called “Tobacco”. In 1600, the Pope himself forbade tobacco and smoking in any holy place. The recent history of smoking is marked by the firs lawsuit against a cigarette manufacturer, in 1983, by Rose Cipollone. He was dying from lung cancer at that time, but before his death he won $400,000. The latest major act against smoking, and smokers, of course, was in 2003, when the state of New York banned smoking in any public place.

Are YOU smoking?

If you don’t know already, let me enlighten you: you are slowly dying, because smoking kills. The drug called nicotine is can be found in any cigarette you want and this drug is a very powerful one. It is very addictive and quitting it can be done only by will. It is hard, but it isn’t impossible. Here is a fact: around 400,000 dye each year from smoking related diseases. The foremost is the lung cancer. Let’s say you don’t care about yourself, but do you care about the others, about your family, your friends, because you are hurting them as well. It is called secondhand smoke, and it is just as dangerous as smoking itself. You already knew these facts? Look at this as a remember.

Are you quitting?

Well, if you tried to quit and you just couldn’t, it means you either didn’t really want to or you didn’t know how to proceed. I wrote a few tips, to help you achieve this goal. Good luck, and remember, the most important thing is WILL.

• Decide upon a day, and just stop smoking. The best way to do it is to find someone to quit with you. As the old saying goes: The more the merrier.

• When you get the urge of smoking, don’t. Wait for a few minutes before. In the spare time, try to do other things, like eating peanuts or eating gum.

• The old switch trick always pays off. Switch to a brand of cigarettes you hate and buy just one pack at a time.

• Change your routines. When you eat dinner, don’t sit in the same place. At the begging eat only at home, or at a non-smoking friend, so you won’t be able to have a quick one after dinner.

• Always have with you other things to put in your mouth, like a toothpick, or candy (watch for those cavities), or, usually the best, bubble-gum.

• At first you will feel sleepier and more tired than usual. Also you will be more short-tempered. These things pass in a week or so.

• Talk about what you are doing. Many smokers want to know how it is possible. Explain to them; discuss it over a drink, in the non-smokers section, of course.

• If at first you fail, try again. Don’t worry, there are fewer people then you think who made it the first time.

• If nothing works, visit your doctor.

As a smoker living in a democratic society you have every right to fill your lungs with smoke. Notice that I said YOUR lungs. Your lungs, throat and mouth are your own personal property and only you have the last word as to how that living tissue will be budgeted and spent. But in fairness, base that decision to put your body at risk on TRUTH and not on skillfully crafted LIES. See clearly through the haze of smoke at what is looking back at you.

TRUTH #1

Smoking is an amazingly clever commercial venture that lures you, the consumer, into giving vast sums of money to corporate executives who are taking home paychecks considerably larger than yours and mine combined. Your habit will continue to keep them in silk ties, summer homes, fast boats and fat portfolios.

TRUTH #2

Tobacco company executives are at this very moment searching for an unsuspecting consumer to replace you when you die. That new consumer may well be your child or your grandchild. Not one of those executives will be there to comfort your loved ones when you go and it is probable that you will be gone years or decades before your time.

TRUTH #3

You may feel the need to continue smoking for important personal reasons and that is your decision. Smoking may be your body’s effort to break a shallow breathing pattern.  Smoking may be a socially acceptable excuse for taking a break from your long hours of difficult work. The habit may be tangled in with your need for companionship. Man has long socialized around tobacco and alcohol.

TRUTH #4

Smoking has absolutely nothing to do with clear mountain streams, sunny days at the beach, rugged independent cowboys or smiling women in velvet gowns.  If you are waiting for cigarette smoke to enhance your sexuality, you are going to be waiting a very long time . . . that is unless you find bad breath, smelly hair, yellow teeth and a hacking cough sexy.

TRUTH #5

Smoking is not “grown-up.” It is “grown-gullible.” Smoking does not signify to the world that you are now a man (or a woman). It signifies to the world that you have been rounded up and will be run off the cliff with the rest of the herd. No matter how the tobacco companies label you, you are unique, important and irreplaceable. And that’s the truth!

TRUTH #6

Addiction is war and you are hooked on one of the most addictive substances known to man. Nicotine has you by the throat (literally). ADDICTION IS WAR. It is, however, a war that you can and must win. Losing is simply too expensive, too brutally painful and too tragic for you, your family and your country. Fortunately, this is a war that you don’t have to fight alone (although you will be the ultimate hero).

When you choose to quit, explore every organization, every online support site and every product available to you. You will also find your doctors to be informative and helpful. If not, find new doctors. You are brave to even attempt to break this stranglehold. You are indeed a David battling a huge and merciless Goliath.

SUGGESTION

While smoking is inseparable from your pulmonary activity and equipment, your breathing nonetheless remains a surprisingly powerful tool (perhaps your slingshot). Mother Nature designed your breathing to bridge your mind, body and spirit so focusing on your breath brings your total being to your defense. Even if you have been seriously addicted for many years you should be able to manage this first small step in the right direction.

Every time, BEFORE YOU REACH FOR A CIGARETTE, sit quietly, eyes closed. Breathe out all your used up stale air by drawing your bellybutton in gently toward your spine.

Breathe in by relaxing your bellybutton and sending the fresh new breath into an imaginary small balloon behind your bellybutton. With each outgoing breath, relax the drawstring muscles around your mouth. Relax your jaw hinges and your tongue. Give yourself the luxury of half a dozen breaths.

You may still reach for the cigarette (the battle isn’t that easy!) but you have put the first stone into your slingshot.

Live long and prosper. Please.
