Cuban Cigars have hard draw?

I brought back a bunch of cuban cigars from overseas; mostly Cohibas. When first bought, I smoked a few and they were great. Once I got them home, I placed them in my good quality humidor. My humidor maintains a constant 70% humidity. However, after sitting in my box for over 4 months they are hard and unsmokable. Any sugestions?

Were the Cigars purchased in Cuba. I had the same problem when I purchased Cuban Cigars in any country other than Cuba. It looks like you were sold fakes. I went as far as bringing a hard Cigar to Cuba with me and had it inspected at a Habanos retailer and at a cigar factory. Both informed me that I had purchased fakes. I gave them the address of the store and country. I was advised that they would not sell cigars to the retailer anymore. The store was removed from the authorized Habanos retailer list. If the Cigars are real then you have a problem with your Humidor.

Step #1 Now that you have a new humidor, the first thing to do is not put cigars inside. First and foremost, you must season a new humidor before storing your beloved stogies. This is also true for an old humidor that hasn’t been used in a while. The cedar inside of a humidor is part of the humidification system, and acts to provide humidity (and flavor) to the cigars, along with the humidification device. If the cedar has not been seasoned, then the wood will actually rob moisture from the cigars, and dry them out. This effect is the exact opposite of what you wanted when you purchased the humidor. #2 To season a humidor, all you need is some distilled water, a clean unscented sponge or cloth, and some patience – at least for a few days. IMPORTANT – Do not use tap water in place of distilled water. Start by dampening a clean sponge or cloth with distilled water, then wipe down all the cedar wood inside of the humidor, including the lid and any trays. #3 Put the wet sponge on top of a piece of cellophane (or plastic bag) and place inside the humidor. Make sure that the sponge is not overly saturated, and not touching any wood. #4 Fill your humidification device with either distilled water or a humidifying solution according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Make sure that the device is not overly saturated by letting any excess water drip out (into a sink), then wipe off any drops of water on the outside of the humidification device, and place the device inside the humidor. #5 Now comes the hard part, close the humidor for 24 hours and wait. The next day, repeat the wipe down procedure using distilled water and the sponge, but do not leave the sponge inside this time, and wait another 24 hours. #6 On the day after the second treatment, it should be safe to use the humidor as long as you cannot feel any dampness on the cedar. If so, then wait one more day before storing your cigars. If you have a hygrometer inside the humidor, ignore any higher-than-normal readings during the seasoning process. However, if the humidity is lower than 72% on the day after the second treatment, then repeat the wipe down procedure for a third time (you may also need to test your hygrometer or recharge your humidification device).

cigar cabinet humidors
Advice for purchasing a cabinet humidor?

I want to buy a cabinet-size, large humidor. I want something that is very nice quality but also reasonably priced. I’ve found one on www.cabinethumidors-online.com that is completely Spanish-cedar lined and constructed of cherry. It fits up to 1500 cigars and is available for $699. The dimensions are 23″W x 17″D x 68″H.

Is this a good deal? Most humidors I’ve seen are much more expensive and made of the same materials. If anyone has any advice I would appreciate it very much!

I would ask why 1500 cigar humidor for your first purchase? If this is your first humidor and you don’t have that many cigars, I would get a great desktop unit.

Spanish cedar is outstanding but the question isn’t the material (all humidors more or less have the same material) but the precision of the construction. It could be a piece of junk or a great deal. Tampahumidors. com has some 1000-2000 cigar humidors from $599 to $1000 also.

Humidors are like cars and women, they look good on the internet but you really have to see them first hand to make the proper decision. Good Luck.

cigar leather cases

Did you wait until the last minute to get a gift for your cigar lover? Well, it might not be too late to get something he will love, but you need to look in the right places.  Everyone gets caught up in buying the perfect gift, but there are generic gifts out there that are perfect for any cigar smoker.

As a cigar smoker, I know that there are certain things I can always use when it comes to smoking a cigar. Of course, some of them are toys. Some are fancy and some are not, but the real functionality of these cigar accessories is of the utmost importance. All cigar lovers need nice cutters, lighters, and travel cases. What’s more, if you can get us a nice cigar accessory tool with some cigars thrown in – the entire better!  I have some great suggestions for the 2009 Holiday Season that can get you out of a pinch and that I’m certain any cigar lover would want!

First, Diamond Crown is a premium cigar maker and they also make some of the nicest accessories on the market.  They’ve released a 2009 Edition of their leather traveling case with 3 cigars included.   The leather on this case is very soft and feels exquisite and the cigars are some of the most sought after cigars on the market.

Secondly, the God of Fire Lighter Set and the God of Fire Cutter Set are two very hot options for any cigar lover.  The set comes with 5 limited edition cigars and each also comes with a limited edition lighter or a limited edition cutter.  These are absolutely perfect gifts for any cigar smoker.  Trust me; we’re always looking for our elusive favorite cutter!

Finally, I would suggest that you look over some cigar samplers that might get your giftee into something new.   During the Holidays all of the major manufacturers put out limited edition gift-sets and samplers and they typically have something special to offer in each set.   Arturo Fuentes puts out a beautiful e

xtremely Rare Sampler every year.  Oliva has released two 5 cigar samplers this year and the Oliva V Sampler comes with a special shape.

Again, I would encourage you to look around at the obvious cigar gifts out there and try to find something special for your cigar lover that is hidden in plain sight.  Every cigar smoker loves a good cutter or a good lighter because we’re always losing them!   Good luck and Happy Holidays!

butane lighter cigar
Cigar smokers, Should I buy a Butane or Fluid Lighter?

I bought a Colibri Lighter that is now broken. It won’t light. Colibri is out of business and no one seems to be willing to repair them.

I an thinking of buying a new lighter. My experience with butane thus far has been negative. Should I buy a fluid next time?

Neither. Any cigar afficiando will tell you that a good cigar should be lit with a match. If that’s not possible, get a torch type lighter, and hold it perpendicular (that’s a 90 degree angle) to the length of the cigar and just barely burn the end, rotating it. Wait for it to glow, and take the flame away before drawing on the cigar.

zippo lighter game

In his essay “Sifting the Ashes,” the writer Jonathan Franzen has the following to say about the smoking habit he struggles to quit: “[W]hen you’re smoking, you’re acutely present to yourself: you step outside the unconscious forward rush of life.”

Beautiful words, with which many cigar smokers would agree. Perhaps that’s why so many of history’s most famous and best-loved writers are hard to mentally picture without a cigar: Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, Collette, George Sand, Karl Marx. Not terrible company, and they’re not alone. Some major contemporary writers are cigar smokers as well.

Paul Auster

Born in Newark, New Jersey, Paul Auster graduated from Columbia, then moved to Paris, France to eke out a living as a French-literature translator. He’s been married to two highly-regarded American writers “Siri Hustvedt (currently) and, before that, Lydia Davis, who is also known for her translation work – and his novels The New York Trilogy and Moon Palace are modern classics. He’s known for using the shape of the detective story to entertain larger questions about the meaning of identity, of language, and of existence. But his biggest fame – and his importance to smokers – came when he wrote and co-directed the movie Smoke, a landmark of American indie cinema set in a Brooklyn cigar shop.

Centered on Auggie Wren, owner of the Brooklyn Cigar Company – a sort of existential Dew Drop Inn where large cross-sections of humanity gather – it ponders the random yet seemingly meaningful connections among various people, a major theme in Auster’s writing (as well as of several other major American art films from the same period – consider Short Cuts and Magnolia). Auster’s selection of a smoke shop as his setting renders the film, which is based on one of his own short stories, especially meaningful for diehard cigar smokers.

Edward Whittemore

Here’s an artist with a colorful life indeed – he went from Yale to the Marines to the CIA, wrote for the Japan Times (it was part of his cover), lived in Crete, and wrote the massive, tripped-out series of literary espionage novels known as the Jerusalem Quartet, a work lauded by Tom Robbins as – like a bowl of hashish pudding – and by Jonathon Carroll as a book that
“makes your soul grow.” (To give you an idea: one of the books is about a 12-year-long game of poker in which the winner becomes owner of the Holy Land. That’s just the plot of one of them.) Yet the Quartet went out of print after only a few years, and Whittemore ended his days in dire poverty and obscurity, working as a photocopier for a law firm.

In 2003, eight years after his death, the Quartet was republished to all-but-universal acclaim; Jim Hougan, writing in Harper’s, called it “one of the last, best arguments against television” and Whittemore – an author of extraordinary talents. His friend Thomas C. Wallace remembers his love of cigars: “We walked the woods and fields of southern Vermont by day, sat in front of the house after dinner on solid green Adirondack chairs, drinks in hand and smoking cigars.” In a similar spirit, lovers of fine cigars should search out his one-of-a-kind novels – after all, premium cigar smokers already know that the most immediately accessible pleasures aren’t always the deepest.

John Grisham

You probably know that John Grisham is an ex-lawyer and the biggest-selling novelist of the 1990s, but you probably don’t know about his charity work, his advocacy on behalf of the wrongly imprisoned, his tireless support of less-commercially-successful writers – or the fact that it’s been said he smokes four cigars a week. In addition to writing the well-loved legal thrillers The Firm and A Time To Kill, among others (as well as such departures as A Painted House), he has done missionary and relief work in Brazil and service on the board of the Innocence Project, which uses DNA testing to exonerate the wrongfully convicted. Perhaps all of this is why he ended up on one of Cigar Aficionado’s lists of the top hundred smokers.

Are you an avid cigar smoker? If your answer is yes, then you should buy various cigar accessories such as ashtrays, humidors, cutters, lighters, cases and tubes. A humidor is defined as any kind of box or room with stable humidity and temperature employed to store cigars, cigarettes or pipe tobacco. Humidors are available in different sizes to suite everyone’s demand. For example, small wooden or acrylic glass humidor boxes are used among smokers, while walk-in humidors are used by cigar shops. All humidors employ hygrometers that control humidity levels.

Classification of humidors

1.    Table humidor

A table humidor is usually kept in a static place. In fact, it can hold usually 300 to a few thousand cigars at a time. Available in various sizes and shapes, table humidors are made of marble, leather and wood. Some of the renowned features of table humidors include:

•    Obtainable in modern and traditional styles
•    Capacity to keep humidors from 500, 1000 to1500 cigars
•    Available with lock facility
•    Specifically crafted to maintain perfect interior humidity and temperature
•    Backed by 100 percent satisfaction guarantee

2.    Room humidor

Room humidors are very common in cigar bars or stores. Keeping in mind original tastes of cigars, one room is altered to a humidor where all the cigars are stored at temperature and humidity required by cigars.

3.    Travel humidor

Travel humidor is a portable humidor that is used for carrying cigars for an event or party. The humidor can carry 10 to 40 cigars at a time.

4.    Personal humidor

Like travel humidors, personal humidors can be used for specific events and parties. Containing up to 75 or more cigars at a time, personal humidor is an ideal option for offering sought after temperature and humidity for cigars.
Humidor brands

There are a number of humidor brands available in the market. Some of the popular humidor brands include Adorini, Andre Garcia, Alfred Dunhill, Gerber Humidor, Bellitica, Elie Bleu, Griffin’s, Manning, Zino Davidoff, Michel Perrenoud and Gerl.

Not everyone is a fan of cigars. In fact, not every smoker goes for cigars. A large percentage of smokers prefer cigarettes for a number of reasons. First, they are smaller compared to cigars, thus the name “cigarettes.” Second, they are less costly. And third, cigarettes can be bought practically from any store.

But if you are one of those who love tobacco leaves, you are well aware you need more than just a cigar to complete your experience. You know that it’s not enough for you to have a few dollars to buy those Cuban or Mexican cigars. You know that to make your cigar experience more worthwhile, you need to use trendy yet highly functional cigar accessories.

Here are two of the most useful cigar accessories today:

Cigar Cutters

Unlike your cigarettes, cigars cannot be used immediately. You cannot light them up immediately and enjoy their “flavour” instantaneously. Thus you need cigar accessories such as cigar cutters. As the name suggests, cigar cutters cut one end (the one covered with a leaf cap) of your cigars. It is only by taking that cap off that you will be able to taste the class and the “flavour” of your cigar.

Cigar cutters come in many forms and designs. This type of cigar accessories come as wedge or guillotine cutters – depending on the type of cut that you want to make on your cigar. After cutting your cigar, you can then use your cheap Zippo lighter. That, then, is the start of a meaningful and relaxing cigar experience.

Cigar Humidors

Once again, your cigars are not like your cigarettes where you can just store them anywhere. Your cigars need to be in a certain level of humidity. For this reason, cigar accessories called humidors are invented.

What are cigar humidors? These are boxes that contain a built-in hygrometer. A hygrometer measures the humidity of the atmosphere. As cigars need to be in an environment with 65%-70% humidity, your humidors would truly be a requisite for any cigar fan.

Humidors are the little boxes responsible in keeping your cigars delectable. They are also the ones responsible in ensuring that no matter how much time has already passed, your “stored cigars” are still as good as new.

These cigar accessories are not only for you. You can share the experience with your friends by using these as personalized groomsmen gifts or unique birthday presents. You cannot use cigar accessories as generic giveaways, however, as not everyone uses cigar. Thus, to be sure that you’ve not purchased these accessories in vain, be mindful and be thoughtful.

So if you find yourself more of a cigar person than a cigarette user, then you might want to prepare yourself to be spending extra for cigar accessories. You cannot say that you prefer cigar over cigarettes and be ignorant of the fact that accessories are needed to complete such an experience.

In a way, cigars are a status symbol. If you are a cigar user, then you might want to live that life. Allot a little bit more budget not only for your cigars, but for your cigar accessories as well.
