menthol cigarette ban

Whosoever said smoking is injurious to health must think twice as to whether target that warning at adolescent beginners who are just about getting curious with smoking or at dependent smokers. Well, it is hard to tell. But efforts at smoking cessation must only be a part of the larger anti smoking tirade to create a healthy and smoker free world. To do this, focus on those who are being given their ‘first lessons’ exactly when they are curious.

Curiosity is an unbelievable state of human mind that lead to most of the developments and man has historically had. It buds in your minds when you discover something new to you and stronger the urge to explore it greater is the length you would go to do it and so greater is the risk associated with it. Understanding the compelling curiosities of a future smoker and a dependent smoker will help make a good beginning for all the parties involved.

Adolescent Curiosities

Cigarettes and marketers of brands including Marlboro, Camel, Winston cigarettes, Virginia Slims, Salem and Kool in various versions and forms have eternally succeeded in projecting masculinity as prestige point which easily influences gullible adolescents growing in smokers’ families and circles. A teen would be tempted to check how smoking could help, although curiosity at this age may not have developed completely. Curiosities at this age may range from

1. How do my brother/friend smokes without coughing

2. How smoking makes one cool

3. “I want to puff-out smoke rings”

4. Government would have banned smoking if it were really bad

Having instigated and introduced to smoking, young smokers observe with keenness adult smokers, their styles, promotional ads that stress on the inevitable focus upon habit-formation and habit maintenance. There are dependency-causing drugs identifiable with amphetamines and narcotics natural and added to tobacco which unfortunately are not recognized at this tender age.

Adult Perceptions

Most adult smokers appreciate that the first effect of smoke as positive; that it makes them feel cool, relaxed and able to concentrate. Many even tend to believe cigarettes with menthol cigarettes are harmless or less harmful following misplaced notions about menthol. They are not curious to know whether the compound would have the same effect on who smokes as it would have when mixed with medicines.

Youngsters who mostly buy cheap cigarettes online or at discount shop aren’t curious to know how smoke makes them feel energized and cool headed and whether it is the end of a nicotine deprivation and another is yet to begin.

Cheap cigarettes at discount price, cheap Marlboro cigarettes from a tax free store or sale blocks further thinking and in less than 10 seconds of first drag, nicotine enters the bloodstream, breaches the brain’s protective barriers and begins its act. The mechanism of nicotine molecules plugging into the nicotinic receptors on the brain’s neurons is, in fact, the most dangerous one as nicotine plugs the same holes as do brain’s crucial signal transmitters which results in a stimulation and increase in blood supply to brain.

The next 30 minutes see the artificial elation and energy slipping away and the smoker identifying the present difference and thus stepping towards addiction. Cheap discount cigarettes at lower price may be availed due to tax free regime but taxmen and businessmen are alike in their intentions.

cigar chart

Copyright (c) 2009 Mike Bond

I cannot understand this movement called “Intelligent Design.” Either there’s Evolution, or Creation. You cannot chart a sort of middle course, saying that something or somebody was responsible for the start of everything, but that it wasn’t God.

We may dispose of this, for its very name makes no sense. So, too, can we dispose of Creationism. Or can we? The Creationists maintain that the world is 10,000 years old and that man, in his present form, is a mere 6,000 years.

The extraordinary fact to bear in mind is that the above hypothesis was calculated in the 18th. century by James Ussher, bishop of Armagh. At that time, the Bible was considered the inerrant Word of God, and the good bishop, in an effort to date the beginning of mankind and the world, came up with the following conclusions.

He started with Adam, calculated his age as 930 years when he died, and from there counted seven generations until he reached Methuselah, who died at a sprightly 969 years.

His grandson, Noah, fell off the twig when he was 950 years of age, and Ussher was then able to pinpoint the date of Creation as 4004 B.C. One of his successors, a Dr. John Lightfoot, came up with even more startling accuracy. He stated that Adam was created at 9 a.m. on the 23rd. October! No-one was prepared to argue this date and incredibly it may still be seen in the margins of some modern Bibles.

Despite positive proof to the contrary, that man did indeed walk the earth a great deal further back than that, everyone was reluctant to argue Lightfoot’s findings, and studies were held back for many years because of this.

Now this has been disproved emphatically and absolutely for many years. I won’t even enter into the argument about Darwin’s “Origin of Species.” Yes, there are gaps, but generally speaking, he was basically correct.

The world is now thought to be 4,600,000,000 years old, but this doesn’t necessarily blow Creationism out of the water, if this is the belief to which you hold. It’s simply wrong science to say that man peeks over a gap of 6,000 years.

There may very well be a God who created Heaven and Earth. It’s simply that Bible scholars cling to their beliefs with such tenacity, despite anything to the contrary, that they’re simply not prepared to consider absolute proof.

Dinosaurs tramped the earth a mere 70,000,000 years ago. Henry Gee, senior editor at the scientific journal “Nature,” reports that a human-like skull has been found in Chad which could be as old as 7,000,000 years. The significance of this find is that it is of such great age, it comes from a time when modern humans hadn’t long diverged from the time when chimpanzees would have emerged.

So, there we have it. Far from man and woman suddenly arriving, (from where?) in their present form a few thousand years ago, leading scientists are finding that the beginnings of humanity seems to be going farther and farther back than was ever imagined.

Remember, too, that dating has improved in leaps and bounds from even thirty years ago. Scientists may now pinpoint an artifact dated, say, 30,000 years old to literally months, not years.

So let’s clear the drawing board, as it were, and have a look at where we really did pop our heads over history’s horizons.

In 1980, some limestone caves in Atapuerca, Northern Spain, yielded a treasure trove of knowledge. Scientists have discovered 32 people in a 45 foot shaft named “La Sima de los Huesos,” (The Pit of Bones). They’re dated to around 300,000 years and make up 75% hominid fossils between 100,000 and 1.5 million years old.

Now these chaps had well developed brains and were skilled huntsmen. Even before this, however, we had “Homo ergaster,” some 2,000,000 years ago. We’d have recognized him and her as related to us. They were largely hairless, tall and slim. They had a limited range of sounds, and probably communicated more by signs.

The first people to arrive in Briton appear in Boxgrove, West Sussex about 500,000 years ago. Close, but no cigar. The oldest goes to a site in East Anglia, where a man dating back to 700,000 years was discovered in June 2002.

At the Boxgrove site, a heavily built man was found, his size calculated at around 6 feet tall and weighing about 200 lbs. As an aside, the oldest weapon yet discovered was a wooden spear head, some 250,000 years old. It was found at Clacton-on-Sea in Essex.

This brings us to the Neanderthals, and we’ll have a look at them in the next article.

I must thank the BBC Home Page, Science and Nature, for some of the information in this article.

It’s fascinated me for a long time from whence we came. How did it really all start? And why do Creationists still insist that their dates are correct? It flies completely in the face of all sound scientific evidence. But more and more is being discovered every day, it seems, and while I’ve admitted that there are gaps, errors, and puzzles yet to be fathomed, science is closing in on much more accurate data and in so doing, making the lives of our distant ancestors more exciting as time goes by.

About the Author:

There was an excellent article in National Geographic a few years ago, which laid out the case for Evolution unequivocally and, I thought, leaving no room for reasonable argument. And yet the Creationists argue still.

So the “rag trade” has been revolutionized without being asked, without knowing. It has come totally by surprise. I can hardly imagine a trade more concerned than ours. The big difference is that before we maybe did not dare even manifest, afraid of judgement even if we had an opinion, any opinion now it’s different, the time is right to become assertive. I mean expression-wise. It’s hardly a topic elsewhere. In fact the gay barometer usually speaks for culture and sophistication and disposable income in any international urban context. So are we heading for that? Arguably yes. It means the times are patting Fashion on the shoulder and not only saying “unite” a week ago (One Fashion Week, finally) but also “express yourself” now that the general refuge of love seems to be accepted, which was what many were hoping for. Of course some fundamentalists did put moral barriers to this, but it already is a general norm in the world, preceded by the anti baby pill in the early sixties, the hippies and the sexual revolution of free love a bit later and AIDS much later that much for the fundamentalists who may consider the legalisation of homosexuality as a moral catastrophe. I can not remember more hurdles crossed in such a short time in a long time, bringing in a new outlook to all in Fashion and Beauty, Decoration and Interiors, Expression of the Times the list is long and the freedom of choice, not only for the designers but also for the consumers it brings with it is going to change the country and its cultural expression. I think the ‘Indian Wave’ is just about starting now. So maybe we will finally understand that the race is about creativity leading to business, a race in which each and everyone is competing with themselves and what they thought was the norm. we shall see what happens with a changed norm.

You may have heard that smoking is one of the most difficult addictions to overcome, and the majority of people who have successfully done it would probably agree. In fact, it has been said that quitting smoking is even more difficult than overcoming addictions to illegal drugs like heroin and cocaine. Why is that?

One of the reasons may be that smoking is for the most part a socially acceptable habit (though this is acceptance level is declining steadily), but there are also other reasons why smoking is such a powerfully addictive habit.

1) Physical addiction.

Nicotine is a powerful drug that acts directly upon receptors in your brain. These receptors are stimulated by nicotine, resulting in several different physiological responses such as elevated heart rate, blood pressure and respiration, and increased mental alertness, among others. The longer you ingest nicotine, the more of these receptors you develop. Over time, these receptors become less sensitive to nicotine and begin to require increased doses to achieve the same level of stimulation. When you try to stop smoking, feelings of intense discomfort (known as withdrawal) will occur.

People have described nicotine withdrawal symptoms as “demons” or “torture” because they are so strong. Most people report feelings of intense restlessness, irritability, fatigue, dizziness, and even flu-like symptoms or chest pain.

Physical withdrawal symptoms can often be eased with the use of nicotine replacement products like gum, patches and lozenges, but many people feel that these products only delay the inevitable by keeping the ex-smoker hooked on nicotine. Still other people claim that using nicotine replacement products helped them conquer one aspect of quitting at a time – for example, the psychological or emotional repercussions, before tackling the physical addiction.

2) Emotional addiction.

The emotional connection to smoking can easily be as strong as physical dependence upon nicotine. There are a variety of reasons why people smoke, but one of the most common reasons that develops over time is an emotional “crutch” or “cover”.

Many smokers report using smoking as a coping mechanism for feelings like anger, frustration, boredom, stress and sadness that they don’t know how to deal with otherwise. Rather than processing their emotions, they reach for a cigarette (or cigar, pipe, etc.) and distract themselves from it.

Of course, this doesn’t really help them deal with unpleasant feelings, but they believe it does. When the smoker tries to quit smoking, they suddenly find themselves overwhelmed with difficult emotions and no way to handle them.

One of the most effective ways to handle these errant emotions is to find alternative ways to process them when they come up. Journaling, venting to a friend, exercise, meditation and affirmations are often helpful. The important thing is not to bottle up your emotions and avoid them, because they just keep coming back until they are fully processed and released.

3) Psychological addiction.

Still another powerful connection to smoking results from the physical act itself: psychological dependence. Since most smokers smoke many times in a day for years at a time, they get very comfortable with the act of smoking, always having a cigarette, cigar or pipe in their hand and mouth. Even if a person is successful in reducing physical cravings and dealing with their emotions, they still may struggle with a sense of loss or aimlessness. The activity that used to occupy so much of their time and attention every day is now gone and they don’t quite know what to do with themselves.

One good way to conquer this type of dependence is to change your smoking routine in the weeks leading up to your quit date. For example, if you tend to smoke while driving, talking on the phone or watching television, gradually reduce your smoking habit during those activities. Smoke in locations where you normally wouldn’t, like standing outside. When you finally do quit for good, you’ll have an easier time engaging in your normal activities without missing the act of smoking so much.

There’s gold in them thar web sites. As businesses flock to the web to get it they join new businesses who have responded to the call to stake out their land in the belief that very small companies can act big, appear big and challenge the model of large unwieldy companies that take to an online presence at the speed their overweight cigar smoking executives play an occasional game of squash. The tiddlers have had a good run. But it’s over. As large, well funded companies gradually take the higher organic listings through search engine optimisation, those smaller companies are forced out to the edges of the eBay bazaar, online shopping malls, business directories and worst of all – the search engine feed fest – PPC. Or in other words – they pay online rent to multiple online landlords. An’ it aint cheap.

Adwords and other PPC

Most successful adwords campaigns have a price tag per month similar to the rent for a high class store in the High Street or Mall. This is a recipe for weak business models to thin out like bees in winter. They either have a good profit margin that allows the advertising overhead or they retreat to the edges to pick up the scraps from bargain hunters. Further, whilst rent for physical premises generally stays the same throughout the year – this online rent easily trebles in November and goes to five or six times normal in December if it’s gift related. Does the profit allow that? For many, it has done so far – but as larger, better and higher funded companies see the profit areas and stake their claim too – the product or service competition increases and the margin possibilities decrease. To compound the problem, more companies advertise through the pay per click model and

Directory charges

Whilst there are many thousands of directories on the web, the free ones aren’t much good, though in years to come they may blossom into good sources of web clout. Generally the course of wisdom is to outsource directory submissions to good (and growing number of) submission experts who work at something like the rate of $25 per 200 or so directory submissions. It’s a good underpinning tool of any SEO campaign. Directories that know they have any weight in influencing rank to any tiny degree whatsoever are very expensive. It only takes submissions to 20 or more to find funds easily sucked up into the hoover of ‘our listing will get you better organic ranking’ promise and the bank account hole getting larger. Directories, at least good ones, are expensive.

eBay and other eShopping Malls

Pushed to the margins of adwords, squeezed by the organic presence of the big fellas, ahhh! An oasis – eBay and other similar bazaars! E-tailers sell their wares through eBay and eek out a profit through volume. Like yet another expensive landlord, eBay take a commission and like any gambling house – always win. eBay is the cheaper option and one that does at least show some result – other leech-like stores like eDirectory operate with a more expensive listing price, take significant sums in advance and provide little in return. eDirectory charges close to £1000 up front and takes 10% commission from each sale with further charges along the way for in-site banners that might help sales after complaints of no ROI. At least Adwords worked although expensive – these dubious landlord malls/stores promise much but soon the tenant realises that it’s all sales talk with negligible return – they go from e-tailer to e-tailer with empty promises because the desperate retailer will put up with a sleazy place to sell just as they’d put up with a sleazy place to live if nothing else were available. As retailers fail to renew the second year, these companies have already moved on to the next retailer with their promises and evidence of existing, albeit soon to depart, listings.

How the future looks

Take a look at your local mall or high street – that’s what web eCommerce iss shaping up to be. Is there a boutique store there? A few. If they can generate interest and buzz they can survive. The same is true on the web. African beads? Maybe. But if you sell laptops, better get it prepared to sell the business off rather than compete with the big boys, who’ll make sure you are squeezed out. That’s how things will change. Don’t like it. Where will you buy your iPod? Dan’s bazaar? Sleazy eDirectory? Or Virgin Megastore’s lowest price, free shipping, free return super-store? I know where I feel safer. The web is already resembling the High Street, recognise this and take appropriate action to take advantage of the trend to survive. Because as in the High Street, the web’s landlords are taking the real money from their internet real estate – it’s generally proving difficult for most Mom and Pops to justify the rent.

So how did Bingo start? In the United States it started as Beano. It could usually be found at county fair and boardwalks. The caller, as they are known today, would draw random numbers from a box of some sort, usually a cigar box. Paying customers would then cover numbers on cards with beans. If a player won, they would shout Beano to signify they had a straight line bingo. However bingo started first in Italy in 1530 as, Lo Giuoco del Lotto D’Italia, this means Italian Bingo. This game is still played every Saturday.

After Italy, bingo spread to France in about 1770. Here bingo was and still is called “Le Lotto”. It France, it was usually played as a gentleman’s sport by wealthy men. After seeing the success in Italy and France, Germany decided to use the game as a way to teach children lessons on math, spelling, and history. They would use a different version of the game with words or phrases, instead of numbers for spelling and history. This version was a huge success since children found it fun.

When bingo came to the United States in 1929, the version Beano was played in Atlanta, Georgia. One fateful day, a failing toy salesman, Edwin Lowe, was watching a carnival game and saw an opportunity before him. Lowe went home to tell his friends and family about the game. He started hosting games using small cardboard cards and rubber stamps. One of his friends go so excited during a win they yelled “Bingo” when he should have yelled Beano. Lowe was so excited about the term, the New York native renamed it bingo. He decide to start selling the game in two ways: you could pay one dollar for 12 cards or two dollars for 24 cards. Later on, he hired a math professor from Columbia University, to help increase the number of number sequences on the cards. They came up with over 6,000 different cards. It is said the professor then went insane.

Later, a Catholic Priest asked Lowe if bingo could be used as a means to raise money for the church. After Lowe gave his consent, bingo spread across the states. As bingo became a hit and people asked Lowe if they could host games, Lowe only made two requirements. If you wanted to host games, you had to pay a dollar a year and of course call the game bingo. Over 10,000 bingo games were played per week by estimate in 1934. Today it is estimated that the bingo industry has over 90 million sales per week in the US today.

obama cigarette ban

Scott Marino was lately puffing away on a cigarette when an employee told him he couldn’t smoke in the shop according to the Detroit News. The 43-year-old declared “no problem” — because the cigarette wasn’t real.

Marino hasn’t smoked in a bit more than a month due in part to electronic or e-cigarettes, which offer a nonflammable, tar- and tobacco-free alternative to normal cigarettes. Powered by a lithium battery, the cigarette contains a liquid nicotine cartridge, a “glowing” end and smoke-like vapors.

“It’s a great option, particularly given the state considering a smoking ban,” said Marino, who smoked 2 packs of cigarettes a day for 25 years. “You can smoke it in restaurants or work, and carry it around with you and not need a lighter.”

Nicotine and all things tobacco are hot issues. In June, the FDA gained new authority to regulate tobacco products. Taxes on a variety of tobacco goods are going up, and Florida added an additional $1 tax on cigarette packs Wednesday.
President Barack Obama recently vented about his struggle to quit smoking, saying he doesn’t smoke in front of his kids, “but there are times I mess up.”

Enter the electronic cigarette companies, promising a device that looks, feels and tastes like a cigarette.

One electronic cigarette company tells users, “Do not be surprised when people ask about you smoking e-cigarettes. After all, to the casual observer, using an e-cigarette creates the appearance of tobacco smoking.”

The president of another e-cigarette company, said he regularly uses his product on airlines, including Quantas, American Airlines and Southwest.

“I just show it to the flight attendants, explain it, and they’re usually fine,” he said.

The electronic cigarette kits sell for roughly $99 to $129.99 and include a wall charger as well as a pack of five cartridges priced at $10 that come in 4 different nicotine levels: 16 milligrams, 11, 6 and 0. Various flavors such as regular tobacco, apple and vanilla are also available. To discover where you can purchase the kit click here.

One nicotine cartridge is the equivalent of twenty traditional cigarettes — or a pack. The device is not promoted as a smoking termination device. It’s planned to give users the feeling of a real cigarette but without the carbon monoxide, smell and smoke.

When somebody inhales, the tip lights up and it tastes like a cigarette but only vapors are emitted. Jackie Wilson, 51, of Detroit is considering purchasing the product. She has been smoking since age sixteen, has emphysema and “desperately needs” something to help curb the habit.

“I need to give up bad. I get tired just going up the steps. When I do, it feels like I ran around the block some times,” expounded Wilson taking a puff on an e-cigarette at Oakland Mall last month.
“I like the way it tastes. This could be a better option for me.”

Tobacco is a substance that is despised by a lot many people. Smokers know that smoking is dangerous and is bad for their health. But one has to take a look at the statistics to realize just how dangerous it is to use tobacco products. Studies say that, on an average, cigarettes kill more number of people every year than all the car accidents, homicides and diseases added together. Even though this is the case, millions of people are continuing with the habit, and an increasing number of youngsters are engaging in the very act of smoking every day.

About 50 million people in the United States alone belong to the category of smokers. This comes to around 24 percent of the adult population, or nearly one in every four people. As these people continue with the habit, the chances of their becoming prey to the horrible effects of tobacco are on the increase. The chances are that these people will fall victim to several diseases of the lung, throat and mouth. Some of them are in serious danger of developing the deadliest of lung diseases called COPD.

Almost all the people who smoke do know that they are risking their lives, and their health is deteriorating. Despite that, they continue to smoke. Many hardcore smokers say that quitting smoking is one such task that is too difficult to be accomplished. They simply lack the will power to get rid of this habit. But, if you go through the statistics, you will find that this is not true. In the US alone, there are 45 million people who have been successful in their attempts to quit smoking. Are they in any way, stronger than you, or did these people possess an iron will that helped them in their efforts to stop smoking? The answer is in the negative. They were very persistent in their efforts and followed the right methods or actions, and this yielded the desired results.

You might have tried many a time quitting smoking, but might have failed in all the attempts. The important thing is that one must ‘never ever’ give up. If you are serious about getting rid of your tendency to smoke, you should take refuge in some stop smoking methods or smoking cessation programs. Out of the many smoking cessation programs options, the one that assumes importance is NLP, or Neuro Linguistic Programming. It has been in use as a smoking cessation method for a long time. Gradually, it has become more popular due to its success rate. To cite the advantage, a test was conducted on 6,000 smokers in which NLP techniques were applied. Six months later, it was found that approximately 98 percent of the participants were leading a smoke-free life.
