When, in the early 1990s, the premium cigar industry rebounded after years of stale sales figures and slackening consumer interest, it faced a new social climate. More and more municipalities and states had passed anti-smoking legislation throughout the eighties, and this trend only continued through the 1990s and beyond. All of which meant that many of those new smokers found themselves unable to enjoy their new hobby over a fancy restaurant meal, at the movies, at some bars, or sometimes (as in the case of the new, ultra-restrictive British smoking laws) anywhere outdoors at all.

Thankfully for smokers, cigar bars sprung up throughout the country as a way to offer smokers the chance to enjoy the rich taste of their smoke in the company of folks with similar interests. Many of the new anti-smoking laws make exceptions for establishments that cater directly to smokers – though, often, in these cases, the smoke-permitting establishments must also install air-filtration systems and various other gadgets that ensure maximum air purity (for those inside) and minimum leakage (for the non-smokers outside). Thus, cigar bars represent an important site for the new generation of smokers. Often, they’re the only place in town where a person’s love of stogies can be shared in a like-minded, social atmosphere. So it’s no wonder that cigar bars, like stogie specialty shops, clubs, and even, magazines, became an important part of the new cigar culture that blossomed during the 1990s.

The range of amenities offered varies with the bar. Some high-end bars offer for-rent humidor-lockers – such as Club Macanudo in New York – or books for sale, such as the two Bar and Books stores in New York City (at Hudson and at Lexington). At Azucar Cigar Lounge in Corona, California, you find plasma television sets and walk-in humidors. Many bars double as, in effect, high-end sports bars; they’re classy places in which to sit in leather furniture while watching the Knicks game.

Other cigar bars offer the same amenities and entertainment options as other kinds of bars. Burbank Bar and Grill in Burbank, California – the same “beautiful downtown Burbank” from which so many ’60s television shows broadcasted – has its own band, and another stogie bar in Glendale, California, has free appetizers. At Fumare (the Spanish word for “to smoke”) in Reno, Nevada, patrons play poker, browse books, and watch sports on the flat-screen TV. And Shelly’s Back Room, in Washington, D.C., with its location close to the heart of the nation’s governmental processes, offers a chance to eavesdrop on the corridors of power.

Other bars are actually cigar stores with substantial added-in lounges – similar to coffee-roasting foundries where coffee is also served, or breweries that offer excellent bars. For example, at The Tobacco Shop in Hartford, Connecticut, you find some hard-to-find smoke and pipe products. Signature Cigars in Rockville, Maryland, offers free coffee to smoking customers.

These establishments are traditionally male-dominated, according to stereotypes, but as with many once-well-established facts about cigar smoking, this one has been subject to some revision in the years since the mid-1990s cigar boom. Premium stogie makers noticed an uptick in the number of female cigar smokers during that period, and stars like Jennifer Garner and Demi Moore trumpeted their love of stogies on the cover of magazines such as Cigar Aficionado. In this new climate, it’s no surprise to find women frequenting cigar bars as well. Photographer Danuta Otfinowski offers, on her website, a photo essay devoted to the women who patronize New York City’s cigar bars. She writes, “Cigars have been a smoky symbol of male power for many years, but the post-feminist 90’s are witnessing the resurgence of the stogie among both men and women.”

With cigars continuing to enjoy steady growth in popularity, and those restrictive anti-smoking laws seemingly not about to go anywhere, the importance of cigar bars will likely continue to grow. But there’s nothing new about that – tobacco has had a social dimension for nearly as long as it’s been smoked. Smoking in ancient tribal societies was, after all, often a social, celebratory activity, and perhaps cigar bars recover some of that ancient camaraderie.

cigar humidor box

Are you an avid cigar smoker? If your answer is yes, then you should buy various cigar accessories such as ashtrays, humidors, cutters, lighters, cases and tubes. A humidor is defined as any kind of box or room with stable humidity and temperature employed to store cigars, cigarettes or pipe tobacco. Humidors are available in different sizes to suite everyone’s demand. For example, small wooden or acrylic glass humidor boxes are used among smokers, while walk-in humidors are used by cigar shops. All humidors employ hygrometers that control humidity levels.

A few years ago, in 2006, the Nevada legislature imposed a public smoking ban.

The new rule doesn’t apply – as yet – to the storied casinos of Las Vegas, where smoking is still allowed on gaming floors. And of course Nevada is hardly the only recent state to impose restrictions on public smoking. Indeed, it joins over thirty states (at this writing) with such laws on the books. If you are reading this from the United States, it is likely that a similar law applies to your area: half the country’s population is currently under the jurisdiction of a public-smoking regulation of some kind.

But the idea of a smoking ban passing the Nevada legislature seems almost like a kind of spiritual defeat for cigar smokers: after all, what could more epitomize “cigar cool” than the mental image of Frank Sinatra’s Rat Pack, cigars and drinks in hand, finger-popping their ways through the floor of a Vegas casino?

It just symbolizes a fact that’s made passionate smokers’ lives a little more difficult over the past decade: in the interest of public health (and out of consideration for asthmatics and others), more and more city councils and state legislatures are choosing to ban public smoking outright, or are limiting it to certain licensed facilities.

Arguments about the effectiveness or appropriateness of these bans to one side, we can all agree that they mean that smokers have to put a little more energy into planning vacations. For a person who loves the taste of a good cigar, for whom relaxation doesn’t become meaningful until there’s a stogie involved, there’s no point in a vacation where you can’t even smoke in your hotel room. With smoking bans underway in Atlantic City (and this ban extends to casinos) and similar one-time bastions of cigar culture, frustrated cigar smokers are turning to a new option: the cruise ship.

And why not? Cruise ship vacations offer the ultimate chance to “get away from it all,” a continuous expanse of blue water, and the opportunity to meet interesting people from all over the country (and world). Few cruises are completely smoke-free, with most offering, at the very least, designated smoking areas that might include cigar bars or lounges. So it’s hard to go completely wrong – wherever you book your passage, you’ll almost always have at least some chance to smoke.

More and more luxury cruise lines don’t allow smoking in living quarters – that’s one downfall. After all, the next person using your room might be a nonsmoker, and it doesn’t make economic sense for cruise ship directors to designate permanent “smoking” and “nonsmoking” rooms; such a move would involve logistical nightmares during booking. But luxury quarters often include balconies, where smoking is sometimes still allowed.

The recent case of a cruise line headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida gives smokers an indication of what they can expect. The cruise line, according to some reports, lost millions in bookings after instituting a partial smoking ban in 2007. But compared to those bans that have caused smokers such dismay in Atlantic City and Ottawa, the Florida-based cruise line’s smoking ban doesn’t even apply to the on-ship bars and casinos.

Indeed, the cruise ship industry seems to be following the opposite track of most US states and municipalities – as they grow more restrictive toward smoking, cruise lines are growing more permissive. One completely smoke-free cruise ship line went out of business awhile ago; another once-smokeless line changed its policies to allow some smoking on the boat.

Smokers will likely want to evaluate cruise line policies prior to booking as there are has examples of ships with almost smoke-free policies. Smoking on such lines may only be permitted in two designated areas – and if you light up anywhere else, you could be kicked off the boat! (That presumably doesn’t mean you’ll be forced to walk the plank, but it’s probably not worth finding out.)

Another rule of thumb mentioned by several travel writers: if you’re looking for company as you smoke, go for a cruise line with a high number of European and Asian clientele. Citizens of many of these countries often still smoke in higher numbers than do contemporary Americans, and there is a Spain-based cruise line that currently sports the least restrictive smoking policy out there.

There are many things that you can grow in your garden or backyard farm that are considered specialty products. When you are first starting out it is always best to specialize in something that is not readily available in your area. It will also promote your status to semi-expert right away.

For example: There are 3 greenhouses in a 50 mile radius of your home. They are your standard greenhouses and have been in business for years. You could not compete very well as they have a solid customer base already, and people get used to doing business with the same people.

However if you had “Bonnie Sue’s Specialty Herb and Gourmet Vegetables” you have just created a new niche. The same people that have been going to Pat’s greenhouse for years don’t feel guilty or disloyal shopping at yours because you are different, plus you will also appeal to a different crowd.

This makes you the expert in the area even if you are just starting out. If you have put together a business from scratch and have gotten it off the ground chances are you know more than most of the people around your area.

I have to insert here it is very important when you are starting out that if you don’t know the answer let the person know you will find out and get back to them. DO NOT give them a false answer as this will come back to haunt you. Much of my business originally came my way and not my competitors, because I was honest and told people the truth and not that you must use or buy my product because it was the only way to solve their problem. One great way to have a support team is to become a Master Gardener, not only will you learn more about horticulture, but you will also meet others with specialty experience.

It was also very hard for me at first when people referred to me as an expert. It took a few years to realize I was exactly that. I knew more than most of the people around about my niche. I now have been asked for job references from many Scientists (all have their doctorate, and years of experience) in the Agricultural field because of becoming respected and being professional and doing a better job than expected.

The best way to advertise your product is to address women’s groups, rotary’s and other such clubs, or to make donations in your area to any conferences that are coming to town if they include your business name on their information. These can include coupons, small samples, or just a listing in the program.

Niches are important when competing in the farm area. You Joe Littleguy can’t compete with the big corporation farms unless you have a hook, or a niche. Look around the web and you will find that this is becoming more and more important because we all know that if you have a unique or special product then you have a marketing hook that can be potentially worth thousands of dollars.

Now I just took a small snide jab at the “Big Boys” but don’t think that they are the enemy. Just the opposite, if you can get a product of yours in their store, then your money woes are at a close.
