cigar box opener

Everyone knows that Cuban cigars are the most coveted cigars, renown worldwide for their smoothness and rich flavors. Indeed, Cuban cigars are so prized that many illegitimate dealers have been known to sell fake Cubans to unsuspecting cigar smokers. How do you tell if what you have is a fake or the real thing? First, make certain that you purchase your cigars from a legitimate dealer. Buying from your local tobacconist or a reputable mail order business can protect you from forking your money over for a box of fake cigars.

If you have an opportunity to purchase a box of purported Cuban cigars, but have your doubts, take the time to examine the box before purchasing it. Here are a few tips to help you spot the fakes from the real thing.

The most important thing to examine is the box. Authentic Cuban cigars will contain a green and white warranty seal on the left front side of the box. The seal will contain an insignia that has a picture of a shield and a hat. On the upper right hand corner of the box, you should find a white sticker that is placed diagonally with the word ‘Habanos’ printed on it. The overall appearance of the box should be neat and clean. If the box appears damaged, smudged, frayed, or marked, avoid it. If the color of the box is dull, don’t buy it. Even if the cigars are the real things, their quality may have suffered in transport. If you are in the market for Cohiba, Trinidad, or Q’dorsay brand cigars, know that all authentic Cohiba’s will contain the green and white warranty seal on the right hand side of the box.

On the bottom of the box of cigars, you should find a heat stamp with the words ‘Habanos.’ The heat stamp should be impressed onto the bottom of the box. Fake Cuban cigar boxes often find other ways to imprint this label, such as using rubber stamps or paper labels. You should also find a factory code stamp at the bottom that is stamped in green, blue or black ink. This stamp will tell you when and where the cigars were rolled.

If you can open the box, take the time to smell the tobacco. Cuban cigars will have a deep, rich aroma, unmistakable to dedicated cigar aficionados. If the smell is off, or very weak, chances are you do not have a box of authentic Cuban cigars in your hands. The cigars should be facing the same way, and the top row may appear slightly flattened. The caps on all the cigars should appear identical, and the foot of each cigar should be cut clean. The bands on all the cigars should also be identical, and should be arranged so that they face the same direction. If allowed, test the cigars out by pressing down on them. Feel along the entire length of each cigar, checking for soft or hard spots. The cigars should feel firm yet pliable.

If you have several cufflinks that you use everyday, then it is very important to provide a safe storage for them.  This will protect your cufflinks from possible damages and you can avoid losing those valuable clothing accessories.  What you need are cuff link boxes.  But before you buy a cuff link box, it is important to understand the different types of cuff link cases available in the market.

Cuff link boxes come in different sizes.  There are cuff link cases that can hold just a few or a dozen cufflinks.  These are small box type storage far smaller than a cigar box or watch box.  If you own few cufflinks, then these types of cuff link cases would be ideal for you.  You can also use these cuff link boxes when you travel.  They are slim so you can easily put them in your pocket.  There are also cuff link boxes that can store hundreds of cufflinks.  These are big boxes and ideal for home use only.  They have several compartments and holding areas for your cufflink collection.

Aside from their sizes, cuff link cases are also categorized according to the material used for their production.  The most popular cuff link boxes you can find are leather cuff link cases.  These types of cuff link boxes are lightweight and have shiny leather exterior.  Usually, the materials used for making these cuff link cases come from cow hide.  The leather is properly treated, aged, and designed to suit different preferences.  There are dark leather cuff link cases.  There are also cases with lighter hues.  If you love leather, these kinds of cuff link boxes would be perfect for you.

Wood is also a popular material for making cuff link cases.  Wood provides many design varieties.  So it is not surprising to see wooden cuff link boxes with different look, designs, and styles.  Most wooden cuff link cases are made from burlwood, teakwood, maple, and fiddleback maple.  These are hard wood which makes the cuff link box extremely durable and strong.  The natural patterns and designs of wood also provide unique look for the cuff link boxes.  Wood also provides a more traditional style for cuff link cases.

Cuff link boxes also come in different colors.  Leather cuff link cases usually sport darker hues and black colors.  Wooden cuff link cases offer different color variations.  Sometimes, the natural color of the wood is used by the manufacturer.  So it would be typical to find brown or dark brown cuff link cases.  It is also common to find reddish colored cuff link boxes because some hard wood have this kind of hues.  There are also wooden cuff link boxes that have creamy white colors.

When choosing the right cuff link box for you, you have to know what are the types of cuff link cases are available in the market.  You have to consider your needs in choosing a cuff link box.  You can also choose a cuff link box that will match your personality and design preferences.

From one perspective, the dramatic rebound of premium cigars couldn’t have come at a better time. After decades of competition from cigarettes, the gradual deterioration (through age) of its customer base, and decreased consumer interest in tobacco products generally, the sudden early-nineteen-nineties resurgence of interest in premium cigars was instrumental in keeping the industry alive. After fourth quarter industry growth in 1992 (the first in years), the launch of new magazines devoted to the hobby of cigar smoking, and a proliferation of cigar bars and specialty shops, cigars were trendy for the first time in decades.

But the timing was also somewhat ironic. Between a high-profile class-action suit against cigarette companies and controversies over cigarette advertising – not to mention a general decline in the number of smokers – the world’s cigar makers found themselves experiencing new popularity at a time when their industry was also facing new marketing challenges. Along with these changes came a gradual increase in the number of buildings, towns, and sometimes entire states where smoking of all kinds was regulated. All those new cigar smokers found themselves restricted from enjoying their new hobby in airports, restaurants, and entire localities.

All of which raises a question – if you’re a smoker traveling the United States, what are your options? To what parts of the United States can you travel if you’re hoping to enjoy a box of fine cigars alongside the new sights and sounds?

There’s no easy answer to that question, because individual towns and cities within an overall smoking-friendly state can enact their own forms of anti-smoking legislation. But in terms of statewide laws, here is a brief guide to the states with the most permissive – and the most restrictive – smoking legislation.

First of all, the overall news is – if you’re planning a true cigar-lover’s vacation, you might want to stick to the South (no surprise there) or parts of the Midwest. Of the eighteen states that allow smoking in bars of all kinds, as well as in casinos, restaurants and workplaces, quite a few are in one of these two regions of the country.

Among the southern states with permissive smoking laws are Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. Tobacco plays an important role in the history of many of these states: Virginia was a major tobacco producer and smoking hub, not to mention the place where many Union soldiers first discovered the habit of cigar smoking during the Civil War. North Carolina was the scene of the discovery of Brightleaf tobacco, and the home of Durham, a major tobacco city. South Carolina was also, early on, a big tobacco producer.

Other very smoke-positive states include the Midwestern states Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. Perhaps smoking helps deal with the harsh winters for which many of these states are infamous. The same beat-the-cold explanation may apply in Alaska, another state with maximally permissive smoking laws, and Kentucky, which I would have counted as a “Midwestern” state, except that some Kentuckians take violent exception to this designation. (Some also don’t like it if you call them “southern.”) Rounding out the list of the top pro-smoking states are Pennsylvania and Wyoming.

As for the bottom of the list: if you like smoking in bars, restaurants, casinos and workplaces, stay out of Arizona, Delaware, Washington State and Washington D.C., Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Ohio, Oregon, Utah, and – no surprise – California. All of these states have enacted the least permissive, widest-scale smoking bans at the statewide level. Not only that, but several of them are cold – it’s hard to imagine a worse fate than traipsing around Minneapolis or St. Paul in winter, with an unlightable stogie, exiled from your favorite bar. In Arizona and California, at least it’s warm enough out on the sidewalk.

States that allow at least some indoor, public smoking include Tennessee, Arkansas, and Montana, where some bars and casinos allow smoking, as well as Hawaii, Oklahoma, and South Dakota, where bars, casinos and restaurants that allow smoking may be found. Most of the other states have heavier but not full restrictions. (And as for Nevada, if you’re wondering – well, you can smoke in some casinos and bars, but not anywhere that serves food.)

Wherever you go, if you’re worried about encountering roadblocks to smoking, call ahead to your hotel or visit the city’s web page. After all, local ordinances can be as restrictive as any statewide ban. Do research first.

The Sonop Wine Farm is located in Paarl, South Africa about sixty kilometers (less than forty miles) northeast of Capetown, wine country that produces some mighty fine red wines. This organic Cabernet Sauvignon wine also has the advantage of being Fair Trade which means that the producers and workers are paid a living wage. So you can drink this wine with a clear conscience knowing that both the environment and the people involved its production have been respected. As long as we’re on the subject, make sure to enjoy this wine in moderation so that nobody is harmed. What about the wine itself?

OUR WINE REVIEW POLICY All wines that we taste and review are purchased at the full retail price.

Wine Reviewed

Sonop Organic Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 13.5% alcohol about $12.50

Let’s start by quoting the marketing materials.

Description: An excellent value, this certified-organic Cab is also one of a growing number of wines that are certified as Fair Trade. Such a certification guarantees that producers and workers are paid a living wage and that grapes are grown using environmentally conscientious practices. This medium-bodied Cab delivers cassis and typical cigar box aromas, ripe fruit flavours and fairly soft tannins. Pair it with pasta in a meat sauce. Our Quality Assurance Laboratory has determined that this wine contains 22 mg/L of free sulphur. And now for my review.

The first sips revealed a wine that was mildly sweet with soft tannins. It had good length and light acidity. The initial food pairing consisted of slow-cooked beef stew and potatoes with a side of okra in a sauce of garlic, onions, and crushed tomatoes. The wine’s intensity and fruit stepped up to the meat. The okra dish brought out the darkness of the fruit. I added green jalapeno pepper sauce to the meat and got some chocolate and tobacco.

The second pairing involved chicken and potatoes baked in a commercial honey and garlic barbecue sauce. The Cab tasted of dark fruit. It was mouth-filling and yet light. There was a tiny bit of sweetness. The lingering acidity did a good job of cutting the grease.

The final food pairing was with whole-wheat lasagna noodles baked with ground beef, peas, and tomato salsa. This lasagna had no cheese. The wine was round. It tasted of dark cherries with soft tannins and a tobacco finish. I added extra salsa (mild, not spicy) and the tobacco finish intensified. The length was good.

Two cheese pairings marked the end of the bottle. In the presence of sheep’s milk feta cheese the Cab was long and chewy. But brick cheese managed to weaken the wine somewhat.

Final verdict. This wine was quite good and the price is right. I would buy this wine again. If you want an organic wine, this is a good deal. And it’s even better when you consider that it is Fair Trade as well. Even if you aren’t interested in these factors, this Cabernet Sauvignon offers a fine wine for the price.

He teaches classes in computers at an Ontario French-language community college. Among his many web sites he is particularly proud of his Italian travel site with a special focus on regional food and wine at http://www.travelitalytravel.com. cigar box slide guitar

The cigar box guitar is an instrument that has fascinated many guitar players, mainly in relation to whether they are real musical instruments. Many people who have learnt how to make a cigar box guitar have done so simply to give their children something to amuse themselves with but the truth is they can make serious music. The origin of the cigar box guitar is in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries when there were many people seeking to express themselves through music but could not afford to but real musical instruments. The use of homemade musical instruments like the cigar box guitar had a resurgence in the years of The Great Depression.

The need for improvised musical instruments led to the proliferation of jug bands which gave people the opportunity to play melodies and generate rhythm for dancing using homemade instruments. So musical gatherings featuring washtubs, spoons and kazoos became commonplace in communities all over America. Gourds with guitar necks attached originally provided the basis of homemade guitars but as cigars began to be shipped in small boxes and the boxes were left lying around the house, sooner or later somebody had to try them out as resonators for guitars. The neck for your average cigar box guitar was often a broom handle with one or two strings attached.

If you want to make your own cigar box guitar you will need some basic tools: a box cutter or pocket knife, a hacksaw, a drill, some fine and coarse grade sandpaper. The raw materials for making your guitar are: a cigar box, a one inch by two inch piece of lightweight soft wood (poplar is a good choice), a dozen one inch nails, wood glue, some wood stain and an applicator. To tune your cigar box guitar just buy three tuning pegs from your local musical instruments store. Their are plans available from expert cigar box guitar makers, in fact there is even a Yahoo Group you can join.

Once you have made your three string cigar box guitar you have several options for tuning. These tunings are from bass to treble: A E A, G D G, A E G.

Many guitar legends are supposed to have played cigar box guitars but not many are talking openly about it. Here is an unverified list of reputed cigar box guitar players who have made names for themselves using conventional instruments: Rockabilly legend Carl Perkins, jazz guitarist George Benson, epitome of refinement Ted Nugent plus other noted musicians like BB King and Jimi Hendrix.

There are also guitarists who make and play their cigar box guitars as their sole musical outlet. One cigar box guitar mover and shaker is Shane Speal, the curator of the National Cigar Box Guitar Museum in York, PA. Shane is archiving cigar box guitar history. He has found the earliest known plans for a cigar box banjo (circa 1870), unearthed etchings of Civil War Soldiers playing cigar the box fiddle and owns a genuine dated and signed cigar box violin from 1899.

John Lowe, a musician and bookstore owner from Memphis who makes electric cigar box guitars called Lowebows. They are made from two oak dowel rods, a wooden cigar box, three guitar strings and a bass string. You play Lowebow with a slide. Lowe’s repertoire has everything from Johnny Cash to Iggy Pop. You can find him busking on Beale Street.

Make your ordinary scrapbooking to extraordinary collage scrapbooking. I love to create a collage while doing my painting or drawing. A collage can be done by using vintage set, cigar box, cloth, puzzle, rubber stamp etc. Here I share some of my tips on how to make your ordinary scrapbooking into an extraordinary collage scrapbook.

Secret #1 Collection of rubber stamps.

When you purchase rubber stamps, look for rubber stamps manufacturer to custom make your family photo rubber stamp. You can create collage that is family topic related using your custom make stamps.

Secret #2 Collection of music note or song lyrics.

I noticed a lot of songs lyrics are with nice poem, and lovely sentences. All this lyrics are very suitable for collage scrapbook. It helps to create the artistic atmosphere, with added one or two lines of musical note or lyrics.

Secret #3 Acrylic paint to add glaze to your scrapbooking.

Buy some acrylic paint in metallic, earth tone or bronze color to paint in your scrapbooking background. This is actually creating historical look for your scrapbook that worth value as collection.

Secret #4 Image transfer technique to create unique design of your collage scrapbooking.

There are many ways to do image transfer. One of the easiest cheapest way is using packing tape to do a packing tape transfer. It is done by cutting your image out and paste it to packing tape, then soup in warm water for five minutes, then put the no sticky side on table with the sticky side up, rub the no sticky side paper with your finger, until you can see your image on the packing tape.Remove the access of packing tape, and using glue or double side tape to paste your image on your collage scrapbook. Another image transfer technique is heat transfer using a heat transfer tool. You can invest this method which is more straight forward and cost effective in long term.

Secret #5 Collection of beads and buttons or leftovers from other projects.

I would like to call this “Rojack Art”. “Rojak” is Malay term, meaning local salad of Traditional Malay in Malaysia and Singapore. It is make of mixture of fried bean curd, fried snack, pineapple, cucumber with local made prawn gravy. If you are chilies lover, it will taste most yummy with some chilies added. Back to my topic, “Rojak Art” is something like using some leftovers from other projects, with beads and buttons, spread it on your scrapbook paper corners. First spread some adhesive on your scrapbook paper, then spread the big items, such as buttons or seashell. Then, add some adhesive, spread small item to fill up the gaps between the big items. Finally put your photo and you are done!

Secret #6 Stamps collage scrapbooking.

My husband’s hobby is collecting stamps. He collected many duplicate copy of same stamps. I borrowed some from him for my collage design. You can do this by purchasing a simple design wooden frame, then using adhesive to paste your stamps around the photo frame. Last add some light brown or metallic bronze color acrylic to make historical look.

Secret #7 Make aging technique with coffee and tea staining.

This is nothing new methods. Lots of people are using this technique to create aging look of photos in your scrapbooking. I like to use tea to create aging or historical look in my photo. This is done by putting your photo in the tea, place it for long period, depending on the tone hue you want. Then air dry your photo before you use it in your collage scrapbook.

Hope you enjoy the above secret method of collage scrapbooking!

antique cigar boxes for sale

The first matches were produced by an English chemist named John Walker in the early 1800s. While conducting experiments with a flammable liquid some of the mixture dropped on the floor and flared up. From this he discovered the process of making matches. His matches were boxed and placed on sale in 1827.

The first match books were made by Joshua Pusey of Philadelphia in 1889. The earliest know commercial advertising appeared in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Through out the early 1900s colorful match boxes and match books were made containing all sorts of beautiful art work and by the 1930s they were widely collected. In the 1940s and 1950s smoking was very popular and millions and millions of match books were manufactured and hotels, nightclubs and restaurants made match books available to their customers. Even today match books are a popular form of advertising from these same retail establishments.

Collectors usually remove the matches from matchbooks and display their collection of matchcovers in albums. Because of the large number of different match book covers available to collectors, some prefer to specialize by type. Others prefer to collect match books from the places they visited. Hotels and restaurants are the most popular by far. However collections of night clubs, bars, railroad lines, airlines, ships, banks, sports, world fairs and political are very popular. I like collecting old matchcovers from my home town.

Matchcovers can be classified by size such as 20-strike matchbooks which have 20 matchsticks per book. Larger 30 and 40 strike matchbooks are called billboards. The most popular matchbooks are odd shapes and early matchbooks that are printed not only on the cover but also on the matchsticks.

Matchcover collecting is a fun and inexpensive hobby. Once you start, make a habit of picking up one or two matchbooks from every place you visit. As you become obsessed with this fascinating hobby you may want to purchase matchbooks at garage sales, flea markets and antique stores. One of the best places to find match books both new and old is eBay. At eBay you can find one matchbook that may interest you or large lots that can sort through.
