Care to critique my poem? Please?

I liked the first three stanzas, and I think it would overall be improved to drop
“Heaven’s Fallen Angel rubs her legs to fuel a spark
Slick & Sweet
Lovely tonic for the lonely
Surrendering to her fire
Soul releasing…

…Sin owns your heart.”

Although I liked how you’ve elongated out those final two lines, I feel like it breaks the structure and theme of the poem too much to compensate with the aesthetic value that it brings.

Structurally you may want to start to add steadily increasing (in quantity, not length) spaces between the lines at random intervals, to kind of give the feeling of breath coming quicker which would mirror the general idea of illicit sex that I feel lies underneath your poem.

I also like the idea of ending the poem on/around “lips loosened”, because it would literally be ending on her lips, which has a nice ring.

Overall I give it a 3.5/5 (that’s pretty high praise from me).

In tobacco-related news: Recent reports in several media outlets throw some light on the deepening problem that illegal small cigar factories, known as chinchals, pose for the Cuban government. It turns out that other United States neighbors face similar problems in managing the flow of tobacco.

A flurry of news reports suggests that Canada is having trouble controlling contraband tobacco–generally tobacco either stolen from producers or sold off-the-books in order to avoid the country’s high tobacco taxes. The scale of the problem? No one’s entirely sure, but one of the largest Canadian tobacco companies has suggested that untaxed revenue from contraband tobacco is costing the country billions of dollars. And in a recession, that’s not chump change.

The same study (funded by industry groups) found that up to thirty percent of the tobacco used in Canada is illegal. That number balloons to forty or fifty percent in places like Ontario and Quebec.

One reason this is a serious issue is such tobacco, often sold on the super-cheap in bulk to consumers for a rate that amounts to pennies per cigarette, does not have to clear any health, safety, or quality control boards.

In addition, the larger the trade gets, the bigger the revenue that the government misses out on taxing–which creates big problems for a society with such a generous tradition of social spending. It also means lower sales for convenience stores and other legitimate businesses, not to mention the tobacco companies themselves, who figure their lost revenue at nine hundred million.

Where is this tobacco coming from? The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (who seize large amounts of the stuff every year) say it’s coming from the United States. More specifically, they trace some of the tobacco to the Akwesasne Mohawk reserve near Ontario, which extends across the US-Canada border. Thus the problem with enforcement: the tobacco is coming from a place that crosses national boundaries, and has a certain amount of limited freedom from both. Several levels of a couple different governments need to be enlisted in any effort to significantly reduce the tobacco influx … as well as, most likely, a study of who is producing this tobacco, and what economic, social or legislative changes might reduce their incentive to do so.

In the meantime, say critics, the Canadian government could at least prohibit sales of tobacco products such as rolling papers to those who don’t, you know, have a license to make or sell tobacco products.

In any case, news reports don’t mention a widespread illegal-cigar tobacco problem. And cigars do indeed represent a less attractive option for counterfeiters. Cigar aficionados are looking for better-quality cigar tobacco, and part of the reason for growing illegal cigar tobacco is that you don’t have to do quality control. Also, chopped-up cheap tobacco is easier to transport and hide than the full-leaf kind that tends to make a great cigar. Illegal cigar-making tends only to happen in cases where there’s a strong incentive to do so, as in Cuba … and people don’t exactly stream across the border for these great Canadian cigars.

Still, in a troubled economy, how long before we can expect to see similar problems arise in the other areas? In the meantime, the Canadians’ problem is one more reason to buy cigars from a trustworthy, known source.

I noticed on a cigar pack that the warning was “This product is not a safe alternative to cigaretts”. This made me think we should extend this practice to other products. for example.

When we think of Cuba we imagine great cigars and men wearing Guyaberas. We also think of embargos. But what does Cuba and America have in common?

For historical sake, Cuba was important to the history of Florida and the Keys due to Florida being a Spanish possession until 1762 when Florida was traded to Britain. Even then, Spain insisted that the Keys were not a part of Florida. England contested this, but neither cared as long as one did not interfere with the other’s shipping. Cuba was Spain’s first real foothold in the New World and was Spain’s stepping-stone to the Americas. The Keys Indians traded with Havana for many years. Most of the Spanish shipwrecks were sailing from Havana to Spain when they wrecked on the Florida reefs.

On October 28, 1492, Christopher Columbus landed in Cuba and christened it “Juana,” in honor of Prince Don Juan, son of Queen Isabella. Its Indian name was “Cubanacan.” Slowly the name Cuba was adopted by the Spanish. Cuba’s size and diversity of landscape no doubt convinced Columbus that he had indeed found Asia.

By the direction of King Ferdinand, Diego Columbus (son of Christopher) was the governor-general of Hispaniola. He commissioned Diego Velasquez to conquer and settle Cuba. When Christopher had visited Cuba on his second voyage, the Indians were hospitable. Velasquez anticipated little difficulty. However, in that short time the Indians of Hispaniola had been treated so terribly, that head chieftain Hatuey had to flee to Cuba. He had spread the word about the cruel white man to the Cuban natives.

In 1511, when Diego Velasquez and his 300 men landed for the conquest, they were greeted by a cloud of arrows.

Cuba’s first capital was Santiago de Cuba. Governor Diego de Mazariego took up residence in Havana in 1558. Havana was given the title of “City” in 1592 and was confirmed as the Capital in 1607. By 1602, Cuba’s Spanish population was about 20,000 of which 13,000 lived in or around Havana. As a time perspective, the Pilgrims had not yet arrived in North America.

Interesting, and little known, is the fact that the English or Spanish ownership of the Keys (Los Martires) was never really settled. The English Governor Ogilvie said the Keys were part of Florida. Spanish agent Elixio said that they were The Martires or Havana Norte and were a part of Cuba, not Florida; therefore not part of the treaty, which had not defined the boundaries of Florida. Both countries stood by their positions; however, neither contested -other than with words.

With Florida under English rule, many of the Spanish in Florida moved back to Cuba, as did the Spanish in Santo Domingo when it was ceded to France. Thousands more fled from French Haiti to Cuba when the blacks revolted and assumed power in Haiti. As a result Cuba’s population grew while Florida was under English control, and Cuban commerce with the U.S. increased.

Today, Cuba prides itself on being independent. Having a strong influence of the Spanish and African culture, when it comes to the dressing sense of the Cubans you will realize that it is pretty much in tune with the west. Moreover being the kings of practicality that they are they usually just dress according to the weather conditions. The general style is laid back and relaxed with the formal clothing reserved for the dinners and theatres. In this, the Cubans are similar to the people of the Americas, primarily Florida. Each love the Guayabera shirt as it is a rather cool open neck shirt that is traditionally made out of cotton. Typically it is not a shirt that is to be tucked into the pants rather it is to be worn outside the pants giving the wearer a casual yet sober look.

Yes Cuba and America has a shared history and apparently a shared taste in clothing that is relaxed, cool and comfortable.
