For so long the applied science of computers and electro-mechanical engineering has ushered in robotics to vastly improve mass production in just about any complex machinery on earth.
You have manufacturing companies ranging from pharmaceuticals, food preparation, bottling, distilleries, cigarette manufacturing, automotive and electrical appliance manufacturing, to mention some, harnessing the immediate efficiencies of robots to churn thousands of commercial products in days where it would have taken human hands to finish in months.
For most of the last half of the 20th century, robotics have replaced humans in performing tedious, repetitive manufacturing routines with none of employment-related costs like fringes and leave benefits. Of course, you still need to have maintenance downtimes on these robotic contraptions.
Autonomic Robots
One can define a robot as an autonomous computer. Its electro-mechanical features that can manipulate objects, recognize sights and sounds and perform mundane repetitive or dangerous tasks are simple I/O interfaces like you PC printers to get things done based on an inferential engine that can create instructions without the help of human intervention. In short, they have complete autonomy.
Some of the marvels of the last years of the 20th century have harnessed robotic science to engineer automatic response from computer-assisted contraptions. When your car is on cruise along the highway, it is basically invoking a robotic autonomy that controls the car without the driver doing anything, except to manually over-ride it and thus, disengages the robotic-like autonomy. When the new generation aircrafts form Airbus and Boeing are on cruise in mid-flight, the same robotic-like autonomy is engaged.
Nearer to home, when you program your microwave ovens or the VCR player to start recording at a certain time of the day, you are benefiting from robotic-like features, Even the music jukeboxes of the 50s have robotic features that allow a bank of 45 rpm records to be selected on cue, played and then returned by a robotic arm.
Robotic Applications
There are now a number of prototype robots possessing locomotive and androgenic similarities to humans. They can walk, climb steps and even play ping pong. Earlier, thinking computers that can process billions of simulations have successfully played and defeated chess champions. Technology now needs to put all that into computational power in a robotic application the size of a human brain and can be motive enough to become human companions. Sound like science fiction, alright. But it will still take a generation or two to get there.
In the meantime, robotics have increasingly found their way in scientific exploration, police and military application as well as industrial manufacturing. You have robots that can be deployed to analyze volcanoes and hurricane formation and other dangerous exploratory endeavors that are hazardous to health.
Unmanned vehicles with acute sensors are deployed by para-military police to survey criminal activity and location prior to an attack. In actual military combats, similar devices on flying aircraft or helicopter-like drones can penetrate hostile territories for both surveillance and bombing missions.
They have the same lethal promise as missiles but still return to base after a successful bombing run. NASA has likewise deployed unmanned robotic spacecraft remotely controlled to explore the outer reaches of the galaxy where human sojourn remains difficult.
Peaceful uses of robotic science has found it way, not only in manufacturing plants, but in hospitals that employ robots on wheels to deliver medication to patients and can interface with computerized elevator to get into floors. The day will come when all household help from robots will became a reality. GP

The Triple Crown, like so many of our best traditions, wasn’t created, it grew into being. During the late 1800’s three different tracks created races to test the new crop of three year olds. These three races, the Belmont Stakes, the Preakness and the Kentucky Derby were held in the same year for the first time in 1875. It wasn’t until 44 years later that Sir Barton (1919) became the first horse to win all three. The term, Triple Crown, wasn’t coined until 1930 when Daily Racing Form’s columnist, Charles Hatton, used it while covering Gallant Fox’s winning efforts.
In the 131 years that have passed only 11 horses have managed to accomplish what is arguably the most difficult feat in sports. Compared to the Triple Crown, no-hitters in baseball are an everyday occurrence; back to back championships in other sporting events, a dime a dozen; there have been more solar eclipses in our lifetime than Triple Crown winners and each year more people are struck by lightening than the total number of Triple Crown winners in history.
Some of horse racing’s most legendary names failed to capture this event. Man o’ War managed only 2 out of the 3 legs (did not start in the Kentucky Derby); Seabiscuit, after losing 17 straight races as a two year old wasn’t even considered (although he did later beat 1937’s Triple Crown winner, War Admiral in a match race); Cigar never competed, starting his great winning streak late in his fourth year.
What makes this event so difficult to win? Several factors have to be considered. First there’s the age of the horses. Triple Crown races are limited to 3 year olds, juveniles, all of whom officially have their birthday on January 1st of each year. By the first Saturday in May (the running of the Kentucky Derby), though most of the contestants will have actually reached their third birthday, they won’t realize their full growth and potential until their fourth or fifth years.
Another significant aspect is the shortness of time between races. Most stakes graded horses of today run with 30 to 60 days off between races, but Triple Crown contenders must run 3 grueling races within the span of 35 days. Notably Sir Barton, the first Triple Crown winner, won the Preakness only 4 days after winning the Kentucky Derby while today’s challengers do have 14 days between the two races.
Perhaps the most important factor is the distance of these races, the Derby is a mile and a quarter (10 furlongs), the Preakness, a mile and three sixteenths (9.5 furlongs) and the Belmont at a mile and a half (12 furlongs) is the longest of the three. The horses that survive their attempt at the Triple Crown will seldom, if ever, compete at these distances again. And yes, survival is a consideration. Many Triple Crown hopefuls are never able to compete again after the Belmont, even potential superstars such as Smarty Jones in 2004.
Will Barbaro be the next Triple Crown winner? He has the breeding and the talent, but as of this writing twenty horses have won the first two legs of the Triple Crown only to fail at Belmont. Twenty five more have won two of the three races, but maybe this year…
The Triple Crown stands as the ultimate test of greatness, and that’s why on the first Saturday in May each year, America’s thoughts turn to horse racing and the hope of just one more Triple Crown winner. Because we do, after all, need another hero.
Triple Crown Facts:
The Belmont Stakes was first run in 1867 for $1,850.00 at the Jerome Park Race Course in New York, and was originally a mile and five eights, but has also been run at a mile and one eighth and a mile and three eights before settling at a mile and a half in 1926
The first Preakness Stakes was held in 1873 with a prize of $1,850.00 at Pimlico Race Course in Maryland at a distance of a mile and a half, but has been run at six different distances between a mile and a mile and a half before stabilizing at a mile and three sixteenths in 1925
The first Kentucky Derby was in 1875 for a purse of $2,850.00 at the Louisville Jockey Club Course, later renamed Churchill Downs, at a mile and a half, but was shortened to a mile and a quarter in 1896
Since 1875 there have been 5 years when it was not possible to have a Triple Crown winner:
In 1890 the Belmont Stakes and the Preakness where on the same day at the same track
In 1911 and 1912 the Belmont Stakes was not held
In 1917 and 1922 the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness where held on the same day
Only Triple Crown winner to directly sire another, Gallant Fox (1930) sired Omaha (1935)
Only two trainers have trained more than one Triple Crown winner, James Fitzsimmons – Gallant Fox (1930) and Omaha (1935) and Ben A. Jones – Whirlaway (1941) and Citation (1948)
Only one jockey has ridden more than one Triple Crown winner, Eddie Arcaro – Whirlaway (1941) and Citation (1948)
No filly has ever won the Triple Crown
Number of living Triple Crown winners – none, Seattle Slew (1977) passed away in 2002
Number of Triple Crown winners to win the Breeders’ Cup – none, Last Triple Crown winner Affirmed (1978), inaugural Breeder’s Cup 1984

Everyone knows that Cuban cigars are the most coveted cigars, renown worldwide for their smoothness and rich flavors. Indeed, Cuban cigars are so prized that many illegitimate dealers have been known to sell fake Cubans to unsuspecting cigar smokers. How do you tell if what you have is a fake or the real thing? First, make certain that you purchase your cigars from a legitimate dealer. Buying from your local tobacconist or a reputable mail order business can protect you from forking your money over for a box of fake cigars.
If you have an opportunity to purchase a box of purported Cuban cigars, but have your doubts, take the time to examine the box before purchasing it. Here are a few tips to help you spot the fakes from the real thing.
The most important thing to examine is the box. Authentic Cuban cigars will contain a green and white warranty seal on the left front side of the box. The seal will contain an insignia that has a picture of a shield and a hat. On the upper right hand corner of the box, you should find a white sticker that is placed diagonally with the word ‘Habanos’ printed on it. The overall appearance of the box should be neat and clean. If the box appears damaged, smudged, frayed, or marked, avoid it. If the color of the box is dull, don’t buy it. Even if the cigars are the real things, their quality may have suffered in transport. If you are in the market for Cohiba, Trinidad, or Q’dorsay brand cigars, know that all authentic Cohiba’s will contain the green and white warranty seal on the right hand side of the box.
On the bottom of the box of cigars, you should find a heat stamp with the words ‘Habanos.’ The heat stamp should be impressed onto the bottom of the box. Fake Cuban cigar boxes often find other ways to imprint this label, such as using rubber stamps or paper labels. You should also find a factory code stamp at the bottom that is stamped in green, blue or black ink. This stamp will tell you when and where the cigars were rolled.
If you can open the box, take the time to smell the tobacco. Cuban cigars will have a deep, rich aroma, unmistakable to dedicated cigar aficionados. If the smell is off, or very weak, chances are you do not have a box of authentic Cuban cigars in your hands. The cigars should be facing the same way, and the top row may appear slightly flattened. The caps on all the cigars should appear identical, and the foot of each cigar should be cut clean. The bands on all the cigars should also be identical, and should be arranged so that they face the same direction. If allowed, test the cigars out by pressing down on them. Feel along the entire length of each cigar, checking for soft or hard spots. The cigars should feel firm yet pliable.
