list of famous cigarette smokers

Monday, February 19th, 2007

In the past fifteen years, the premium-cigar industry found itself in rebound. After decades of competition from cigarettes, the aging of its customer base, and overall consumer trends indicating a decline in smoking in general (we’ll return to this in a moment), many observers figured cigars were done for. Then came 1992. The fourth quarter of that year showed some of the first industry growth in years, and this trend metastasized in coming years. By 1996, the industry was seeing 36 percent first-quarter growth.

But cigars returned at an ironic time. High-profile class-action suits, controversy over Joe Camel, and decreasing general consumer interest in smoking, among other things, led to an increase in smoking bans in public buildings, offices, and, eventually, whole cities. Airports helped lead the trend; among the major travel hubs where you’re no longer welcome to light up are Los Angeles’ LAX and Dallas-Fort Worth.

All of which raises a question – if you’re a smoker going on vacation, what are your options?

Thankfully, the web site SmokingSection has, aggregating information sent in by smoking readers, listed and ranked over fifty major airports by their friendliness to smokers. Their rankings, like those of your high-school English teacher, run from A to E: A for airports where you can smoke by the waiting gate; E for airports where you not only can’t smoke indoors, but the nearest smoker-friendly outside areas require a small trip in themselves (and may be unacceptably far from takeoff gates).

So where should you travel if you want to smoke, not only when you reach your destination but on the way there? Well, the answer seems to be: Texas. The Lone Star State offers the only A-ranked airport out of the dozens surveyed. That’s Dallas Love Field, a smallish airport that receives only flights from major area transport provider Southwest Airlines. Frequently-flying cigar smokers who live in that wildcatter’s capital should feel lucky.

Texas offers us a B airport as well – these are the places where you can’t smoke near the gates, but that do offer smoker-friendly bars, restaurants, and/or lounges nearby. That would be at Lubbock – the same city from which Buddy Holly hailed. (But don’t take that as a bad omen.) Other southern and southwestern states are well-represented among the B airports, which makes sense, given the close links between many of these states and the history of the tobacco industry. Restaurants at New Mexico’s Albuquerque Airport, as well as at airports in Charlotte, North Carolina; Charleston, West Virginia; Phoenix, Arizona; Tucson, Arizona; Norfolk, Virginia; and – appropriately enough – Richmond, Virginia, that famous tobacco town. (Where would American smoking be without Virginia?)

Orange County, California, offers an airport named for John Wayne, and appropriately the tobacco-loving Duke’s namesake airport also offers B-class accommodations. So do the major regional airports in Tampa, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Detroit, Boston, and New York City (both JFK and LaGuardia), in several large cities in Ohio (Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus and Dayton), in Fairbanks, Alaska; Moline, Illinois; and Ontario, Canada. Visitors to our nation’s capitol can also light up at a few of Washington, DC’s airport bars, though these are apparently hard to find.

It’s a good thing that the weather in Texas and California is generally fairly clement, because some major airports in both of these states ban all indoor smoking – but outdoor smoking areas are available at a conveniently close distance. The aforementioned Dallas-Fort Worth and LAX both disallow indoor smoking, which accounts for their C rating, but they do invite smoking customers to step outside. The Worcester, Massachusetts airport has a similar arrangement. (Enjoy that brisk Massachusetts air.) These are the C-class airports.

After that it gets dicier. Quite a few major American airports seem to fall into the D or E classes, with smoking accommodations within the airport that require a bit of a hike, or (in the case of the E-class airports) nothing at all but outside areas located far from gates. Many D airports offer those ubiquitous glass lounges where smokers are invited to light up and take a load off; these include Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Las Vegas (McCarran), and Atlanta (Hartfield). Happy hunting!

Most cities have their best restaurants, but there’s no doubt some of the larger ones offer the finest in cuisine and atmosphere. When it comes to Canada, famous restaurants you won’t want to miss are in Montreal, Quebec, Vancouver and Toronto. Both cities have restaurants that some critics believe compete with the fine dining of big American cities like San Francisco and New York.

The island of Montreal boasts upward of 4,000 restaurants, some of which have received golden reviews from famous international food critics. Perhaps the most elegant and romantic choice is Chez Queuz, located at 158 St. Paul East. A trip to the restaurant really is like taking a journey back in time. It was built in 1862 and has velvet curtains, crimson carpet, and old-fashioned chandeliers. The fireplace is always burning in the main dining room and the service is great. All of the tables are adorned with fresh orchids and the silverware is finely polished. The restaurant’s wine list is anything if not extravagant, carrying as many as 300 titles. And if that’s not enough, the famous restaurant has won the Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator since 1996. Expect to pay upward of $45 per person, but the elegance and delicious dishes from the kitchen will make your experience well worth it.

Another famous restaurant in Montreal is Rib’n Reef, located at 8105 Decarie. Though passersby who see its radiant, glowing sign outside might think it’s a simple steak house, they are surely wrong. The extra large tables make staying awhile not out of the question. And the meat is only of the highest quality USDA-approved cuts. The shrimp, some have said, is almost exotic with is tender texture and brilliant flavor. And the beverage and dessert selection will have you oohing an ahhing. Not only will you enjoy piling on the calories more than any other eatery, but you can enjoy a glass of port along with a fine cigar, all while having a conversation with bar staff who’ve been on hand for as long as three decades.

When it comes to Toronto, you really can’t go wrong with Truffles. The restaurant is pricey, but well worth it if you’d like to experience the best in Canadian fine dining. It’s even been voted Toronto’s most popular restaurant. The food is absolutely exquisite. The spaghettini with truffle foam, some say, is by itself worth a trip to Canada for. Another favorite is the famous potato-crusted halibut. But besides the food, the service really sets Truffles apart from others famous restaurants in Canada. The wait staff has been described as having an amazing sense of humor, as well as being extremely friendly.

When in Toronto, you also will not want to miss Rodney’s Oyster House in the city’s downtown district. Among a long list of shellfish choices, you simply have to try the -’Oyster Slapstick Chowder,’ which has been the delight of locals and world travelers for decades.

Life insurance, specifically Term Life, is arguably one of the best values in the entire financial services arena. Where else can you go and get hundreds of thousands of pounds in protection for literally pennies per day? Rates for Term Life insurance remain at all-time lows, and now is the time to lock in the best prices. Here are some ways to help you save money when purchasing life insurance.

Buy when you’re young. Although your financial needs may be lower at a younger age, the rates are also substantially cheaper when you’re young. Remember, the goal is to cover your primary assets (like your salary and house) so that if something were to happen to you, your beneficiaries would be able to persevere financially. The best advice is to lock in as much protection at a young age while your health and prices are still good.

Your “half” birthday could be costly. While some companies raise their prices based on your actual age, most companies increase the price of their policies six months before your birthday. It’s a term called “Age Nearest” in the industry, and that half-year price increase could really add up over a 20-year term policy.

Buy before any major health issues arise. Healthy people have the best mortality risks and thus are much cheaper for companies to insure. This translates into lower rates for the “Super Preferred” customer than someone with higher risk factors such as a heart condition, cancer or diabetes. Conversely, if you were unhealthy when you acquired your policy, and your health has now improved, it might be time to shop for a new policy, as your rates are likely to be lower.

Select the right length of coverage. Everyone has different needs, and not one size fits all when it comes to term life insurance. While it may make sense for people in their 30s and 40s to secure a 20-year term length, a 10-year term might be more appropriate for someone nearing retirement.

People who are trying to quit smoking, for example, might be best suited purchasing a shorter term (and then replacing it with a longer term policy when they qualify for non-tobacco prices). Lastly, individuals who have 30-year mortgages might want to consider a 30-year term to ensure that the house is protected throughout the period of the loan.

Check for price breaks. Companies often offer “price breaks” at certain coverage amounts (i.e. £250,000 vs. £225,000). The truth is that many people can actually pay less money for more coverage. Check how much or little your prices increase when you increase coverage to £250,000, £500,000, or £1,000,000.

Buy the right amount of coverage. Many agents may try to sell you more coverage than you need. The purpose of life insurance is to “indemnify” (replace financial loss), and what most people should be looking for is income replacement for their beneficiaries. Independent financial planners recommend the following rule of thumb: purchase an amount of coverage equal to 6-10 times your annual gross income.

The right hobby with the wrong company could cost you. People who participate in high-risk sports or activities (such as hang-gliding, skydiving, mountain climbing, scuba diving, and racing), or even those who like to have an occasional cigar could very well pay more money if they don’t pick the right company.

Every company looks at risk factors differently and some are more liberal in certain areas than others. Make sure you work with an insurance company that has properly matched your personal profile with their underwriting criteria.

Work policies aren’t always the best deal. . Work policies are often based on a composite profile of the employees you work with, many of whom may be less healthy than you, or have other underwriting factors that might drive up rates.

These type of policies also expire if/when you leave the company. Inexpensive term life insurance polices that cover your dependents until they can live comfortably on their own are often a better alternative.

Check out your payment options. Many life insurance companies offer discounts to consumers who pay their premiums annually.

Review your policy often. Do a review of your life insurance policy a minimum of every three years, if not more often. Rates may be lower, and your circumstances may have changed, necessitating more or less protection. If you are replacing a policy, make sure you allow enough time to get your new policy in place so coverages won’t overlap or lapse.

Don’t overspend on protection. Term life insurance is the most affordable and cost-effective pure protection available, and it is typically much less expensive than a comparable whole life policy. The old axiom still rings true: “Buy Term and invest the difference.”

What are some of your favorite cigar moments? Here are a few reasons to enjoy the experience, taste and aroma of premium and super-premium cigars:

1. After a wedding when the groomsmen are enjoying a moment amongst themselves, and celebrating the groom’s good fortune.
2. After the birth of a child, whether it’s your child, a niece, nephew, Godchild or the child of a colleague.
3. After the commencement ceremony for your favorite protégé or ward.
4. After purchasing your first home and evaluating the work and hope ahead of you.
5. After selling your first home for a handsome profit and remembering the rewards of work and the pleasure of work rewarded.
6. After burning the mortgage, and knowing that there will never be another payment. The place is yours, lock, stock and barrel.
7. After leaving the factory job for the last time.
8. After the best dinner you’ve ever had.
9. After the best and most complete play, concert or opera you’ve ever attended.
10. With the rest of the campers at the end of a hike in the woods or in the desert.
11. Beside the garden wall when there is a break from the labor of working with your hands in the good earth.
12. While standing and surveying the view of a field of harvest, full of the promise of work and the promise of prosperity, while remembering the planting of that field.
13. While working on a vintage automobile like a convertible Cadillac from the 1970’s.
14. After negotiating for–and getting–a vintage automobile.

As you can see, there is a wonderful tradition of celebration and the constancy connected to the smoking of a great cigar. The sentiment and sensation of cigars and pipes are part of understanding the cigar consumer. Therefore, the best way to give a cigar is by purchasing them either through reputable online stores, many of which will sell and ship them gift-wrapped, or by purchasing them through tobacconists and fine cigar and pipe stores.

Remember that quality cigars are hand-rolled and custom made. There are countless ways to find out what kind of cigars would be best suited as a gift. For example, select according to smoke time. A good cigar will have a smoke time of 20 to 60 minutes, depending on its size and style. Other factors are color and aroma.

Whatever the celebration and whatever the occasion, giving and receiving fine premium or super-premium cigars–or just enjoying them on your own–will top off the pleasure of each experience and enhance life’s special moments. The best part of the cigar experience is to discover what moments you can plan for cigar enjoyment. So start with giving and receiving premium cigars, and then let them accompany all your great life celebrations.

Camping – it’s a brute necessity, and one of the most refined and civilized of pleasures. Our remote ancestors would never have survived and evolved without the ability to build strong and protective shelters in the wild – the wiliness and courage to gather or track down their food – and, perhaps most of all, the resourcefulness to entertain themselves and each other in the infinitely long evenings before civilization.

At the same time, we thoroughly civilized, contemporary urban dwellers have the opportunity to appreciate the outdoors in a special way, one that was, perhaps, not available to our faraway forerunners: the way of contrast.
After all, they knew no other way to live. But we have our hyper-busy existences to compare against the unhurried ways of forest and countryside. And serious campers know that their everyday lives enrich their experience of camping, much as the dash of chocolate syrup can just make that dish of vanilla ice cream, or as a glass of good beer or wine enlivens the cigar smoked afterwards.

Camping is one of those timeless American pastimes, like baseball or hiking, that it’s hard to imagine life without. But with government scientists forecasting a continued upswing in extreme weather events – floods, intense storms, droughts, tornadoes, etc. – camping may not always be the easy summer option that it is for most of us today. In an America where, as the Associated Press recently reported, overall summer temperatures are hotter, rainfall more intense and floods more frequent, opportunities for camping may be correspondingly rarer. Which is all the more reason to seize any chance today!

These days, finding a campsite is easy. The National Park Service website maintains a search engine (look for the “Find A Park” service) that enables you to search our country’s vast national park system by name, location, activity and even topic (“American Presidents,” “Caves,” “Civil War,” etc.). Plug in “camping” under the “activity” topic and you can find all sorts of opportunities close to home. And most American localities, even the smallest towns, now have at least one sporting-goods store where you can locate anything from a pup tent to the latest high-tech waterproof tent. (If there’s an army surplus store near you, even better.) Online classified ad sites, many of them free, make it easy to avail yourself of someone else’s lightly-used, high-end camping gear, sometimes for next to nothing – thank goodness for the impulse buys of the affluent.

But though camping gear may be easy to come by, and camping locations too, that doesn’t mean you should approach a weekend in the Great Outdoors as if it were no more challenging or dangerous than a weekend in your TV room, or even a night in your backyard. Here are some things to keep in mind before you go tromping off to the woods:
1) Know basic CPR and First Aid. The Red Cross offers courses in many locations through community-ed programs. Keep a fully stocked and labeled First Aid kit.

2) Wild animals are not your friends. Don’t approach them. Even the small ones. And don’t feed them either – that’s not just a cliche.

3) Hang your food from a tree; don’t keep it in your tent, or you may find yourself feeding wild animals against your will. (And you may be part of the feed.)

4) Be observant. A wilderness area that’s new to you is not the place to go off for one of those absent-minded strolls in which you pay more attention to what’s in your head than what’s on the ground in front of you. You’ll enjoy yourself more if you’re paying attention to the area around you, but you’ll also be more likely to see that rattlesnake while he’s still a relatively safe distance away.

5) Know your own medical history and that of anyone you’re camping with. If anybody in your party has a serious allergy, it’s everyone’s job to keep that person from getting the bee sting that may threaten him or her.

6) Don’t hike by yourself.

7) Do some research beforehand, on the flora and fauna of the area (even if you’re camping close to home), any dangerous animals, and the upcoming weather. The author of this article was once stuck on a camping trip while tornadoes ravaged nearby Minnesota counties. It’s no fun.

8) Make Smokey the Bear proud. Keep a ring of rocks around your campfire, have a full water bucket on hand as well as a fire extinguisher, build your fire away from flammable items, and “for crying out loud!” don’t ever leave your fire unattended. Make sure it’s extinguished before leaving the grounds, even for a moment.

9) Don’t leave trash.

10) Remember that the camping ground isn’t yours. It was here before you and it’ll be here after you. To put this into practice, here are some “green” camping tips to consider: Avoid using little single-use disposable items or Styrofoam dishes on your trip (you’ll have to do more packing, but it’s worth it). Bring firewood rather than using fallen branches, which contain nutrients that forest soils need. Dump your “gray water” (dish- and shower-water) in the areas designated rather than in the bushes or streams. For those of you who own power generators, consider replacing them with solar panels. Crank-operated flashlights and radios make a lot more sense in the woods than battery-powered ones, too.

internet cigarette tax

Cigarette smoking is an addiction many people have, despite it being a life threatening addiction. Girls and boys, women and men all alike smoke all types of cigarettes be it discount cigarettes, menthol cigarettes or cheap cigarettes from Europe. Though there are so many types of cigarettes in the market today, they are all basically the same composition with a few changes in taste here and there.

All cigarettes are made of the same ingredients which include filter materials, tobacco, paper, additives and paper gum. It is only the rate and the place of manufacture of these cigarettes that change. The cheap cigarettes in Europe are available at reduced rates because the expenses that go in manufacturing these cigarettes is considerably lower than the expenses incurred in manufacturing the same cigarettes in America. This is why it is possible to get cheap Winston cigarettes, cheap camel and cheap Salem cigarettes from Salem.

In addition to this, the cigarettes manufactured in Europe are basically manufactured and shipped from the duty free zones exist in Eastern Europe. It is because these cigarettes are tax free that they are available for free, even while adding shipping costs. However it is because of the import duty of the different countries that people tend to smuggle in cheap cigarettes from Europe in a bid to save some bucks.

Though the composition of cheap Marlboro cigarettes and Marlboro cigarettes are relatively the same, there is a change in the tastes of these two types of cigarettes. These changes are attributed to the additives and preservatives that are added to the cigarettes, and the shelf time of cheap European cigarettes. European cigarettes are usually sent by registered mail to their destination, and it takes about two to three weeks for the cigarettes to reach its destination. This brings about a change in the taste and feel of the cigarettes. It is only the chronic smoker who can make out the difference between these two types of cigarettes.

With the internet, there is no need of you going to stores to buy your cigarettes. There are many online tobacco stores you can do your cheap cigarette shopping at discount price with the comforts of your home or office. This is one of the major advantages of shopping online through online tobacco stores. All that has to be done is to surf a few sites while sitting in the comfort of your home, choose your cigarettes, make your payments and pretty soon, you will have your cigarettes at your doorstop.

Another advantage of buying your cheap European cigarettes from online tobacco stores is that they are available at a much cheaper rate than in the offline tobacco stores. It is possible to buy three to four cartons of cigarettes in online tobacco stores for the rate of a single carton of cigarette in an offline store. So although the shipping time may be a bit long when you buy online, if you buy on a wholesale basis, you can afford to wait and save money in the long run.
